Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sportspeople

Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
Note that there are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople.

This AfD may be the same issue as with Kristína Panáková AfD back in November 2023, except it's about a former men's footballer. He has played hundred of career games in total and even appeared for his national team, but fails WP:GNG due to lack of in-depth coverage. I'm struggling to find enough sufficient sources as this article has been written terribly with possible dubious stories for years, so does corresponding Slovak Wikipedia, which would help copy over English article otherwise (I already checked and translated it). • Keep. I don't see the problem here. He played on a reasonably high level for many years, and the multitude of sources clearly chronicle what he achieved during his career, which was far from negligible. Dubious stories are subject to cleanup and not a matter for AFD. Geschichte (talk) 18:51, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – I don't understand Slovak to give an opinion, and the article in English is the best developed in relation to cs and sk, but the athlete appears to have good coverage in the local media. Svartner (talk) 03:34, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With only database source listed, the article of this one-time Olympics participant clearly fails WP:GNG. According to Results on Sports Reference, Kopecký was not in the top three winners of 1936 Summer Olympics. He also had not gained any medal record. My Google search came up with similar namesakes.

I would also consider footballer of the same name for deletion due to possible dubious info. I also couldn't find anything to verify his death; EU-football.info stated that he played two games each for Meteor Prague and now-defunct Bohemia national football team. Unlike the shooter, footballer has corresponding article on Czech Wikipedia but it's an unsourced stub.

  • Keep - I found [2], [3], [4], and [5] among many more Spanish sources.

This source "analysis" is infuriating and incorrect... all the sources have secondary coverage ("In Cameroon he spent all day working on whatever he could to help his large family. They had nothing left over. The ball was just entertainment... he has the African presence in his game. Dizzying power and potency... Bogmis has always been a believer, but his faith became more intense during lockdown... he was a figure in the UdeC title in youth football", "Originally from Yaoundé, the capital of the African country... a loan, the difficulties of the climate and language, the desire to return to his country during the pandemic and endless obstacles he had to overcome before his sweet present, the one that has him as one of the figures to follow in the 'B' during this 2022", "The story of Job Bogmis is that of a fighter full of dreams. He arrived in 2019 with three young people from Cameroon. They were all promised heaven, but some were left stranded in Temuco and he was the only one who continued in soccer... He speaks Spanish better and better, he no longer needs a translator", "the cold, the difficulties with the language and the few opportunities left him alone very soon. Today, at 22 years old, he dreams of being recognized for his talent, although his team is in last place in the Primera B standings... plays on the right wing, his pass is worth $200,000 and he was the last victim of verbal violence on the Chilean fields")

the reason the third source is "associated" with the team he played for was because it was from the same city... like seriously? Young player with onoging career in Chilean pro soccer that will definielt get many more sources in his ongoing pro career as well. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 08:33, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

*Keep It meet WP:SPORTSPERSON and WP:ANYBIO. I understand your concern regarding the notability of Abdul Azim Badakhshi on WP. However, Abdul Azim Badakhshi's unique background as Businessmen, social media personality and both an Pro-MMA athlete and a Pro-kickboxer sets him apart. While some athlete may not meet the notability criteria, Badakhshi's multifaceted sports career warrants recognition. Moreover, his status as a public figure in Afghanistan and india further emphasizes his significance. ==hampionship Status==: Abdul Azim Badakhshi's title as the AFC (Afghanistan Fighting Championship) Champion in the 76 kg weight class is a notable achievement in a recognized MMA organization. His participation in significant MMA events, including the main card of AFC - Afghanistan Fighting Championship 3,Brave CF 47 - Brave Combat Federation 47: Asian Domination, ACB 86 - Moscow highlights his prominence in the sport.

Media Coverage: Badakhshi has received substantial media coverage, with in-depth articles profiling his career and contributions to MMA. According to WP , a sportsperson is presumed to be notable if they have won a significant honor and received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources independent of the subject. Badakhshi meets this criterion, indicating sufficient sources to meet the general notability guideline (GNG).

WP:BIOFAMILY Abdul Azim Badakhshi being the son-in-law of Jackie Shroff, one of the most famous actors in Bollywood cinema, has always been a headline in Indian news. Their relationship has garnered millions of fans in India. This has led Badakhshi to become a public figure in India as well. https://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/tiger-shroff-wishes-sister-krishna-shroff-on-her-birthday-gifts-her-a-trip-to-maldives-for-one-person-only-101642752859707.html

Business and Social media personality Abdul Azim Badakhshi has extended his influence beyond the MMA ring into business and social media. He has invested in fitness and sports-related ventures, promoting health and wellness through training facilities that support aspiring athletes.

On social media, Badakhshi has garnered a substantial following on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. His engaging content, including training videos and motivational posts, connects with millions of fans. He uses his platform to advocate for social causes, such as human rights and youth empowerment, making him a respected public figure.

Through his business ventures and active social media presence, Abdul Azim Badakhshi has become a multifaceted personality, inspiring many both in and out of the sports world.

I hope this information clarifies Abdul Azim Badakhshi’s notability. Thank you for considering this evidence. I am open to further discussion and additional sources if needed to support the inclusion of this article.Parwiz ahmadi (talk) 10:02, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - @User:Svartner My edits have solely been copyedits and grammar fixes, apart from working on the article lead, I don't remember adding any content, as the article is mostly as it is. I believe the subject is notable, although the references mentioned in the article may not contribute to its notability. The guy is a former footballer, having played for Salgaocar FC during the 1980s/1990s, they used to compete in the National Football League (India), the then highest men's football league in India. If we consider WP:NSPORT, the subject can pass notability. Goa being part of India and the presence of online media active during the 1990s seem difficult to find. Most of the sources of such people maybe available in old archives or newspapers, since the state of Goa has only been much active with the online media in the 2010s. After retirement, the subject seems to have also hosted a global Goan event known as the World Goa Today [15], even active in singing [16]. He also seems to have played/or is playing amateur football with former players from Salgoacar FC [17]. See O Heraldo search results of his name here [18]. Also he seems to have been based in Kuwait [19] or Qatar (see O Heraldo), which may be one of the reasons why there isn't much references from Goa-based or other Indian media. I'm not too familiar with the Arab news sources, apart from Arab Times, to which he has also contributed as a writer see [20]. If somehow this AFD does result in a keep, maybe an editor could tone down the promotional content. Rejoy2003(talk) 05:27, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does not appear to pass WP:GNG or any of the WP:SPORTS criteria. None of the other language wikis have sources that are either a)independent or b) provide significant coverage of the subject. Doing WP:BEFORE reveals only a few pieces of routine coverage. Out of the sources here: [1] and [2] go in depth, and seem to be independent. No clue about reliability.

[5],[6],[7],[9] aren't independent, due to being published by his former club.

[8] does not mention him.

[3]&[4] are just routine coverage mentioning that he played in a certain match.

[10] is a data base entry, which isn't in-depth.

This leaves us with two sources, both of which were published the last time this article was deleted.

(Disclaimer: found this page through a CCI, and I've deleted a paragraph over copyright concerns. The only source I deleted, however, also did not mention the subject.) GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 08:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Yes the article has weak sources which are pretty much primary sources, but that doesn't negate the article, it needs a clean up. Besides you have other sources at de:Valmir Nafiu, [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26], lots more with stuff on him, poor nomination, WP:BEFORE clearly not done correctly in my opinion.. • Keep - @GiantSnowman:, I think important context is needed here... The sources do have secondary coevrage and even then if you look at Macedonian media it tends to cover players in the form of seemingly "routine" media (see [27], [28], and [29], as opposed to e.g. Indonesian media which tends to write about players in more long-form profiles). He has been covered by various Macedonian news outlets. As a result, I feel that the fact that he has received lots of coverage by many Macedonian outlets in the form of shorter seemingly "routine" articles ([30], [31], [32] etc, has Wikipedia pages in eight languages and has played in German Bundesliga, made 100+ appearances and helped Macedonian team win three keague titles and has ongoing career is enough all put together. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 23:34, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They are "seemingly routine" because they are routine... those are all routine transaction announcements and match reports, which we see loads of for every footballer. Which source specifically meets SPORTCRIT's requirement for IRS SIGCOV? JoelleJay (talk) 11:39, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, leaving aside the first three links, because they're not about this footballer, [10], as JoelleJay caught, is a site run by the governing sports organization and can't help show notability due to lack of independence. I clicked on a few links from [12], which is when I noticed that none of those pages had an author listed. Looking at the site a bit further, their about page reveals this:

Through "TEAM" readers receive original, exclusive, but primarily verified, reliable and accurate information. In addition to the team of professional sports journalists, the top Macedonian athletes in the role of columnists have their own space and say in "TEAM".

Given that the articles written by athletes don't seem labeled, we're going to have a really hard time verifying that anything in this site is independent. And, given that this is a WP:BLP, I don't think articles with unclear authorship can even be used. Can they?
And as for the links in [11]- The previews just seem routine, but I clicked on them all only to get 404 pages. I've been having lots of trouble with Internet Archive for the past day, and I don't feel like struggling with it for what seems to be, again, routine coverage.
@GiantSnowman I trust your judgement, and you obviously saw something I'm missing. Could you give me the sources you saw that show notability? GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 00:59, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – In fact, there seems to be a lack of independent sources that provide more in-depth coverage (the best one is from KF Shkendija's own website), but the recreation of the article does not seem to be in bad faith, SALT would be too much. Svartner (talk) 03:29, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Subject's only claim to fame is that she was the first woman MLB drafted and thus, they lifted their ban on drafting women, both of which are already mentioned in Women in baseball and her dad's articles. While that may be the case, she never actually played in any MLB or even MiLB game unlike Kelsie Whitmore. Her time in high school and college are not worth mentioning as she was not a star athlete in either cases. The sources backing these claims are either dead links or only mention her briefly and I cannot find enough coverage for her in general to meet WP:GNG or WP:NATHLETE anyway. The Legendary Ranger (talk) 19:46, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Strong Keep. Besides the fact that it feels wrong to relegate a woman who broke through in a male dominated field to a mention in her male relative's article (in an encyclopedia which already has a gender gap issue), her drafting was very significant, lead to a rule change and also, notably not a publicity stunt but based on a genuine assessment of her talent. She is well covered in literature on the subject (1). The article could certainly use expansion (I'd like to find information on her performance in her senior year season, for instance), but that by itself is not reason to delete it any more than any other stub article. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How you "feel" is not a legit reason to keep an article. I am sure many other editors' personal point of views conflict with the rules here, but they can do nothing about it. Most of those books in that Google search only mention her for a single sentence or paragraph. That is certainly not "well covered." The Legendary Ranger (talk) 22:58, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The first word in my comment is that besides the fact that it feels wrong. I'm also not talking about my personal feelings here, but commenting on how doing things like redirecting a woman's page to her male relative's only enforces systematic gender bias on wikipedia. Many of the books contain only a paragraph mention, but several of them do contain more coverage than that. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talkcontribs) 15:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge with Women in baseball per WP:BLP1E. While being the first female drafted in MLB is a big deal, the subject did not sign with, let alone play for, any professional baseball organization. Outside of that, she had a rather unremarkable college basketball career. This person is clearly defined by a single event. She can adequately be covered at the proposed target article, even if information about her high school baseball career is added as suggested by Wasianpower. Frank Anchor 22:40, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect per WP:BLP1E. She was drafted by a team which had her father as general manager, she wasn't signed to a contract, and (per the Chicago Tribune reference) she hadn't played baseball for two years before being drafted. The facts suggest this was a stunt for attention. As there is no substantial coverage of her other than that event, I must vote to redirect. Leaning towards Ron Schueler as the target over Women in baseball, as that article is more likely to contain more than de minimis discussion of her. Walsh90210 (talk) 23:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly oppose Ron Schueler as a target. Casey Schueler is most notable for being the first woman drafted by MLB, not for being Ron’s daughter. Frank Anchor 00:34, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Strongly agree with this. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talkcontribs) 14:44, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep for two reasons: First, there is a discrete entry about Carey Schueler in two different baseball encyclopedias: Donald Dewey, Nicholas Acocella, and Jerome Holtzman's The New Biographical History of Baseball: The Classic—Completely Revised (Triumph Books, 2002) and Leslie A. Heaphy and Mel Anthony May's Encyclopedia of Women and Baseball (McFarland & Company, 2006), indicating that in the field of baseball history Schueler is considered sufficiently notable for inclusion in encyclopedias. Second, the second criterion of WP:ANYBIO is has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in a specific field, and Schueler precipitated the MLB to change a rule about signing contracts for women), an enduring contribution to baseball. I'm unsure if this footballer is notable. Most of the cited sources seem to be interviews (primary sources) and I'm not finding much else in Google search results, though it may be possible that significant coverage exists in additional foreign-language sources.

This article was PRODded and deleted in 2020, albeit with less substantial content. However, I believe the notability concerns raised then apply to the current version as well. Complex/Rational 18:21, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable tennis player who fails to meet WP:GNG and WP:NTENNIS. Can't find any sources that involve more than just a passing mention or his one successful tournament in Tunisia, which isn't enough to meet notability requirements. Adamtt9 (talk) 18:28, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve added French-language sources that mention him more than just in passing, as well as his finals/titles on the World Tennis Tour. He’s ranked in the top 200 and just passed the first round of qualifying at Roland Garros today. Mellamelina (talk) 19:25, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to note that a lot of the references that have been added are again still just passing mentions of Royer and run-of-the-mill mentions of his tournament results. They don't go into any actual depth. Adamtt9 (talk) 00:35, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you created the page for Francesco Forti, and I'm confused by why Francesco Forti is seemingly more notable than Royer? Forti's page only has one reference, and it's just his ATP profile, so it seems a bit ridiculous to me that you're dying on this hill. The first five sources on Royer's article alone go into depth about him. And yes, a lot of the other sources are his tournament results because they're included in a section summarizing his professional career, which is hardly where you'd look for a huge thinkpiece about him. Mellamelina (talk) 00:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, re: Bogdan Bobrov, a player with 7 ITF titles and a career-high ranking of 361. You created this article and only cited his ATP profile, so I'm really not understanding how you're taking issue with Royer, who has the same amount of titles and a career-high ranking of 200, well above Bobrov's 361. Mellamelina (talk) 01:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as not notable for anything tennis related. But Mellameline has a good point @Adamtt9:. You created Bogdan Bobrov and that player looks per the page to be even less worthy. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to dogpile on @Adamtt9, but this AfD is absurd to me. Here are the non-notable tennis articles they've created this year alone. All of these are minimally sourced.
So if we're really trying to cull tennis articles, why don't we start there, rather than the article of someone who just made a Challenger final and passed to the second round of qualifying at a Grand Slam? Mellamelina (talk) 10:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Minimally sourced doesn't equate non-notable. Adamtt9 (talk) 11:39, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So can you tell me what makes each of those players more notable than Royer? Since I don’t have any sources to refer to. Mellamelina (talk) 11:44, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Might I remind you that this all arose from you claiming that you couldn’t find any sources on Royer, and yet you don’t seem to have any firm ground to stand on in your own articles. To me, it seems like you did one simple English-language search on Royer and jumped to conclusions when you couldn’t find anything within the first 10 seconds of searching. Mellamelina (talk) 11:46, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mate I did enough of a search to not find any sources that went into depth, only passing mentions. I went through some French sources, but as I don't speak French, it was slightly difficult to figure out if they were enough to determine notability. So I sent it to AFD. You went and improved the article, so if other people agree with you that these sources are good and WP:GNG is met, then the article will be kept and no harm is done. I'm not sure why you're being so aggressive. Adamtt9 (talk) 11:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m being “aggressive” because it’s laughable that you’re talking about the state of my sources given the state of the sources on your articles. Don’t you understand that you’re throwing stones from a glass house and it seems a bit hypocritical? Mellamelina (talk) 11:58, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve done some research on the players I mentioned above that you deem notable enough for their own article, and I’m failing see how most of those, apart from one or two, could be considered more notable than Royer. None of them have even made the qualifying draw of a slam. The fact that you would put a “non-notable” AfD on this article and yet deem those players notable enough for their own articles is again, laughable. When this is over, you should definitely do a deep dive on your own work and consider whether, by your standards, they warrant an article due to notability and sources cited. Mellamelina (talk) 12:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just wondering, have you looked at our guidelines on notability? For tennis related notability a player can 100 ITF events and gain nothing. Those events are filled with children and college players and are the lowest rung of making money. The Challenger level (minor leagues), making a final doesn't cut it either. You have to win a Challenger level event to warrant tennis notability at Wikipedia. Now a person may garner notability in other ways by having magazine articles or newspaper columns specifically about them. Our articles must include these facts to show notability. If you are ranked high enough to make the main draw of the WTA or ATP main tours you also gain notability, so that it is extremely likely that you'd find a good source or two. Obviously there can be an obscure case or two, but the best thing is to look at our guidelines and if a player doesn't pass that minimal litmus test, they shouldn't have an article. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:21, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So why exactly aren't these standards being applied evenly across articles? How does a player like Bogdan Bobrov with zero ATP main draw appearances and zero Challenger titles warrant his own article? Mellamelina (talk) 20:01, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My bad, he has a Challenger doubles title. Mellamelina (talk) 20:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And that's the difference... a minor league Challenger title whether its singles or doubles. When the guidelines gained consensus way back when, doubles and singles events were treated exactly the same. Doubles notability has fallen drastically every decade for 50 years to the point that maybe it should be re-looked at... perhaps needing a QF on the main tour to get the quick article creation. But until that happens it's the consensus we go by. There will always be borderline players and you always have to show that general notability. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on this point. There are many players who technically meet the WP:NTENNIS requirements of playing in an ATP tour level match in doubles by receiving a wildcard. Even in Masters 1000 tournaments like Jacopo Bilardo and Giorgio Ricca in the Rome Masters just weeks ago. But they are still red links and an article shouldn't be created, because other than that one appearance where they lost comfortably, sourcing is not going to demonstrate an ounce of notability. So both WP:NTENNIS and WP:GNG should be looked at to determine whether a player meets guidelines or not. Adamtt9 (talk) 21:22, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Okay, that’s fair. Mellamelina (talk) 21:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, only GNG should be used to determine notability, as NSPORT requires GNG to be met. Winning particular titles is completely irrelevant if you haven't cited SIGCOV sources in the article. Further, to qualify towards GNG, the coverage must be of the subject's career as an adult. JoelleJay (talk) 23:28, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But tennis guidelines help determine whether an editor should start creating a draft article knowing the likelihood of GNG will be met by outside sources in English or otherwise. And then consensus will determine whether GNG has been met. What do you mean by an adult? There are countless thousands of articles of people under the age of 18 who meet GNG. What does age have to do with notability? Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:44, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Per YOUNGATH, sources, especially local ones and anything interview-based, on a subject's junior achievements do not qualify as IRS SIGCOV. JoelleJay (talk) 23:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But that doesn't mean you get no GNG as a youth. We have be more careful. You don't use a high school paper that says their quarterback is special. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:34, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does not appear to pass WP:NBASKETBALL as they do not meet any of the criteria, or WP:GNG as the sources are insufficient to establish that. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 21:34, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I contribute more on this? SusuGeo (talk) 12:22, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course. Any editor may work to improve articles, even those that have been nominated for deletion. If you can demonstrate that the person is notable for some reason (you can see my reasons for questioning this below), then you might be able to prevent the article from being deleted! Good luck! P Aculeius (talk) 13:09, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete unless some reason can be keeping can be located. Normally I would point out that the nominator did not mention having searched for sources, as required by WP:BEFORE. However, this is a college basketball player, and the sources in which you would expect her to be mentioned are probably news sources. A quick search just using the "news" tool above appeared to show minimal coverage: university profiles focused on one of their student athletes, and a couple of basketball scores. Certainly nothing currently in the article demonstrates notability: there are thousands of college basketball players, some of whom are notable, but merely being one doesn't seem to indicate notability. I admit to some uncertainty: is it usual for all Vanderbilt Commodores players to have articles, even those who weren't part of the team for very long and who don't appear to have been primary contributors to their team? It's possible that there's some policy I don't know of here, or some other reason for notability I didn't think of, but it isn't indicated yet. P Aculeius (talk) 13:09, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@P Aculeius Usually the majority of college players don't have an article. The editor in question seems to have been creating articles of players from Africa rather than Vanderbilt players. There is no inherent notability from playing for Vanderbilt or any other basketball team, college teams or otherwise. All players must simply pass WP:GNG. There are some sources below that have been uncovered since your !vote if you are interested. Alvaldi (talk) 10:15, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Playing professionally would tend to make her more notable, but if the only thing to add is that she's done so, then it may not be enough. I don't discount local sources, but merely being interviewed by a student newspaper, however editorially independent it may be, doesn't confer notability. The question is whether she's done something to bring her to attention at some significant level. For instance, being a major contributor to a championship team, or mentioned (not just in passing, or noting the basketball scores) in news sources with a greater reach than college papers. Sporting figures profiled in national papers or similar sources may be notable. I'm not foreclosing the possibility of notability; just that so far it doesn't seem to be here. P Aculeius (talk) 14:07, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: This subject doesn't appear to have nearly enough to meet the WP:GNG. I found 1 paragraph of coverage at 40, and the subject was interviewed by 60 Minutes 41. It is a close call though, so please ping me if more sources are found. This source provides depth but is quite local 42. Let'srun (talk) 02:21, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    There is also 43. Let'srun (talk) 02:26, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Please note that locality of sources has no bearing on whether they go towards GNG or not. Proposals to discount local sources have been repeatedly rejected in the past. Regarding other sources, This has a few paragraphs about her. There is also this feature in the The Daily Athenaeum. It is the student newspaper at West Virginia University, something we generally don't consider going towards GNG, but it states in its article that it is editorially independent from the university and does not have a faculty adviser. I'm not sure that changes anything. There is also this feature in relations to the 60 minutes interview. Alvaldi (talk) 09:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It should be noted that since 2022, she has played professionally in Spain and France so there might be some sources there. She is also a member of the Nigerian national team which could indicate that there might be sources about her in the Nigerian media. Alvaldi (talk) 10:58, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alvaldi, we have a strong consensus against considering any student papers as contributory to notability, regardless of their editorial independence: However, given their local audience and lack of independence from their student body, student media does not contribute to notability for topics related to home institutions. JoelleJay (talk) 16:28, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JoelleJay I've usually never consider student papers being contributory to notability but the part about it being editorial independent cast a few doubts in my mind with this particular paper. Thanks for the clearup. Alvaldi (talk) 16:59, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The SI article is not independent and potentially not RS, as it was written by a WVU sophomore for the Mountaineers Now "FanNation" blog section of SI. JoelleJay (talk) 16:37, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: in addition to the WP:NBASKETBALL criteria mentioned above, WP:NCOLLATH may be relevant here. However, while the article has some improvements since this discussion began, I still don't see any evidence of notability. The subject doesn't seem to have won any titles or participated in any championships or tournaments of note, and the only details provided in any of the sources describe nothing more than a brief biography focused on her playing basketball at various schools or being a member of various teams or playing in certain places. Nothing that would naturally bring her to national attention, or distinguish her from thousands of other college or minor professional athletes. P Aculeius (talk) 09:46, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hkkingg This is not a matter of protecting my nomination (that sounds weird) or whatever, this is a deletion discussion, and this is a matter of letting you know what the policies and guidelines involved really is. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 21:19, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Only one of those sources is independent. The first is from Vanderbilt, the second from WVU recruitment affiliate WV Sports Now (written by WVU students/employees), the third from the Vanderbilt student newspaper, and the fourth from the WVU student newspaper. The remaining French source is routine transactional news. JoelleJay (talk) 19:49, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The SI story is a single event, so we would need sources showing sustained SIGCOV to meet N. The (highly local) Paterson Times source fails YOUNGATH and does not count towards GNG, and the fact she was interviewed on 60 Minutes is also irrelevant as it is not secondary independent coverage. If the only good material we have on her is from a flurry of minor pieces regarding one event in 2020, and nothing else substantial since then, we really don't have an NPOV basis for an article. JoelleJay (talk) 11:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no issue with the quality, significance, or relevance of the sources. My question is, what is the subject notable for? Her personal life doesn't establish notability, and being a member of college basketball teams or minor professional basketball teams doesn't establish notability. Being interviewed by sports magazines or similar sources doesn't make her notable. What is it that elevates her above the level of a good but not particularly outstanding young athlete? Has she done something unusual or important that would still be worth mentioning twenty, forty, sixty years down the road? Right now the only specifics about her basketball career, besides a list of teams that she's played for, are that she scored 28 points for the Vanderbilt Commodores over the course of twenty-two games in one season: an average of 1.27 points per game played. In any given year, there are literally thousands of college basketball players with comparable records. P Aculeius (talk) 14:32, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Right. I havent done that mate, just nominated these pages Pharaoh496 (talk) 13:19, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Noting that I was pinged to this discussion, and that I'm not a fan of these articles, I believe we should delete all as fundamental violations of WP:NOT as cricket statistics turned into articles due to one person's consumption by what I like to call the cricket insanity. They are also clearly non-notable as the sources cover Grace's entire career, not simply his performance in any given event. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 20:46, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Probably merge the shorter articles, with less referencing, to larger articles covering longer periods of time. These articles do not consist entirely of statistics, though it may be appropriate to cut some material from them. A chronological split of our W G Grace article will satisfy GNG. See, for example, the coverage of the 1880s in Bax's chapter "The Glorious Eighties"  [46]; the chapter on Grace in Portraits of the Eighties: [47]; Midwinter's chapters 7 and 8 on 1879 to 1891: [48]; and Darwin's chapter 6 on 1880 to 1891: [49]. So you could certainly write an article on W. G. Grace in the 1880s or the period 1879 to 1891. The question is not whether the main biography article should be split, but how. W G Grace is the subject of a large number of entire books, since he is probably considered the greatest cricketer of all time, so his biography is not realistically going to fit in a single article. James500 (talk) 04:03, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well other cricketers with longer careers do also have same articles. One new thing that has been inspired from football articles is a seperate career page - Career of Lionel Messi. Since Virat Kohli's page was long, I made this article Career of Virat Kohli. Maybe something similar? Pharaoh496 (talk) 04:39, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete/merge all Is this a mockery of some sort? Sure you can split some details from the main article, but why the hell would you make more than a dozen subarticles, each with just a few paragraphs? WP:NOTEVERYTHING and WP:NOTSTATS come to mind here, we don't need prose sections for every season with the stats. Reywas92Talk 20:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I have never looked at these articles before, but would assume they would all be mostly more than a few sentences! The W. G. Grace in the 1878 English cricket season article can be selectively merged. AA (talk) 12:26, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge – The player is very notable in Cricket, but it is possible to summarize the information in the main article, or recreate it in a less number of forks. Svartner (talk) 22:40, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Just a reminder, you can't argue for a Merge or a Redirect without providing a specific list of what the target article is for each article being discussed. The discussion closer carries out the consensus, they can't make these decisions up on their own. It's the discussants' role to provide a full resolution to an AFD nomination, not just an outcome. Otherwise, the closer might have to dismiss these kinds of opinions. Liz Read! Talk! 23:19, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean merging these various articles into something more direct, like "W. G. Grace's cricket career". I understand that it is possible to summarize the main content to avoid this number of forks. Svartner (talk) 08:33, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Liz, I am not aware of any policy, guideline or consensus that says that. I do not think that is how we normally deal with mass proposals. The number of articles nominated, and the number of book chapters that would have to be examined, would make it difficult to compile a complete list of merger targets in the 7 days of an AfD. I think it is perfectly acceptable to say that articles should be merged in accordance with the scope of the chronological chapters in those books, and then leave the final determination to the WP:PROPMERGE process, which does not have a 7 day deadline. For the avoidance of doubt, I have proposed an intial merge of the relevant three articles to W. G. Grace's life from 1879 to 1891 based on the scope of the book chapters I mentioned. To insist that I provide, within 7 days, a list of each and every other target based on the other chronological chapters in those books (and their chapters are chronological) is certainly obstructive, and might confront me with a WP:FAITACCOMPLIS. I see no reason why a closing admin cannot look at the chronological scope of the chapters of those books. James500 (talk) 15:52, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Like I mentioned - a seperate article called Career of W.G. Grace, which is like a few prexisting articles. That covers all Pharaoh496 (talk) 17:15, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. Noting that I was pinged here after having participated in several other cricket career salami-slice article discussions (many non-AfDs). FWIW, I definitely would have !voted in this even without being pinged since I watch the sportspeople delsort. Anyway, I agree with TaOT and AA (!!!) that these articles are not salvageable and should be deleted (with maybe some content from the 1878 one merged?). They are largely prosifications of routine, primary stats reports from CricketArchive with a handful of trivial anecdotes and quotes sprinkled in. If there was anything from these time periods worth including in the main article it would not be from these articles and therefore merging is not appropriate.
As an example, of the 1871 sources: 34/58 sources are stats, corresponding to 1480/2348 words. Of the remainder, 777 are to presumably secondary independent sources, with 640 words outside the lead. Out of those 640, 411 are repeated verbatim (or nearly) in the main page. That leaves the total amount of content that could be merged at 229 words:

Grace turned 23 in July 1871

Grace in 1871 was principally involved with four teams: the Gentlemen, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the United South of England Eleven (USEE).

1871 was a wet summer and, even when the rain relented, there was a persistent chilly wind.[8] Grace, however, had the skill and resilience to cope with adverse conditions and some of his best batting performances were achieved on wet wickets.

This innings was played on a "sticky wicket" after rain and many people considered it the finest of Grace's career, though Grace himself disagreed.
Grace began the innings cautiously and took fifteen minutes to score his first run but then, records Rae, he "scored at a cracking pace".[9] MCC Secretary Harry Perkins had no doubts and insisted that it was Grace's greatest-ever performance with rain frequently stopping play and making the wicket at times "unplayable".

Grace's presence ensured a bumper crowd with over £400 being taken at the gate. This money went a long way towards the £1500 that Nottinghamshire needed to erect the Trent Bridge Pavilion.

Simon Rae remarked that cricket enthusiasts still argue about Grace's "greatest season" and that 1871 features in any such discussion.

He took 79 wickets at 17.02 with a best analysis of 7–67. He claimed five wickets in an innings 5 times and twice had 10 in a match.

The bolded "finest" innings being referred to is from a "Married v. Single" first-class match, which I've gone ahead and merged into the main article (with author attribution). The rest of the material is trivial or would be redundant. Considering the 1871 page is one of the few containing any unique non-trivial, non-primary content, I think it is reasonable to consider the rest of the articles unsalvageable forks that should be deleted rather than merged. I have been draftifying some articles about 120 years old gymnasts with very insufficient sourcing. This one I'm sending straight to AFD. The log indicates that a WP:LUGSTUB used to occupy the article title Georges Charmoille, before being moved to Gustave. In other words, there seems to have been unreliable sources somewhere along the way regarding his first name. There could be a situation where two brothers were gymnasts, but since this new article doesn't address that discrepancy at all, I consider it completely worthless. The Gustave article currently sits at Draft:Gustave Charmoille, but Georges can't be redirected there since redirects from mainspace to draftspace aren't allowed. Therefore: just nuke this one for emphatically failing WP:SPORTCRIT and problems with WP:V. Geschichte (talk) 10:27, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This should be transcluded to the Olympics deletion sorting list. If I knew how, I'd do it myself. Oblivy (talk) 11:08, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Oblivy As I mentioned above, there are serious uncertainties about who "Georges" Charmoille really is. We already have a draft for Gustave, who is recognized as the correct name for the Olympian by Olympedia, at least. Geschichte (talk) 13:06, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The two sources at Gustave are websites that lack citations for their assertions. archive.org has one hit for Gustave, seemingly about a dance performance. It has 38 hits about Georges, admittedly all post-1980. The official site lists Georges as competing but not medalling in 1908. Oblivy (talk) 13:32, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Olympedia seems to say he's known by both names? Seems very likely notable if he's the WORLD champion gymnast - deletion would seem to leave him as the only champion without an article per Template:NavigationWorldChampionsArtisticGymnasticsMenHorizontalBar? BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:50, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Note that the draft at "Gustave" was also previously "Georges". I am sure we could ask the Olympedia team for their research on the matter to better know which name should be the article title - and for sources to use in it. I don't have significant time to do it, so I am neutral on whether the content of this article should be moved to the current draft article likely about the same person or not, but if it's going to take some time for clarity, it probably should. Kingsif (talk) 22:42, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep on its face, he meets the WP:NSPORTS requirement for medalling at an Olympic games. I recognize the possible argument that the 1906 games weren't really the Olympics (note old discussion here that did not reach a consensus) but they were considered the Olympics at the time and so the same spirit of best-in-the-world seems to apply.
Gustave vs. Georges seems irrelevant to this discussion. I don't think one uncited claim on a website is enough to discard the many books listing him under Georges. If necessary, create a redirect from Gustave and mention the controversy (if it can be supported by RS) on this page. Oblivy (talk) 13:17, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No notable pro wrestler, doesn't meet WP:GNG. 1, he worked on independent promotions. Not enough coverage from third party sources about him for an article. 2, the article is half hoax. He never won titles on OVW, TNA Wrestling, JCW or PWG. Looking his Cagematch profile, just won a few titles. HHH Pedrigree (talk) 19:28, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of Delta State Statesmen in the NFL draft

List of Delta State Statesmen in the NFL draft (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

No evidence that this grouping meets WP:NLIST, the article is just a straight copy of the single database source. Can at most be merged to Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen#Football if this is deemed of some importance after all. As can be seen at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 420#DraftHistory.com, there are concerns about the source anyway, so new creations based on this source should probably be stopped. Fram (talk) 08:47, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep There are multiple sources in regards to Delta State football players being drafted ([62], [63], [64]), though I agree that a lot of the lists should be expanded upon (which myself and a lot of others are very much trying to work on), and turned into FL's. In regards to this list, I would not be completely opposed to a merge/redirect, but for now I just view it as a Stub. KingSkyLord (talk | contribs) 17:44, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What's required for list notability is reliable secondary sources doscussing the grouping, not the members of the group. 4.37.252.50 (talk) 22:20, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Subject does not meet the WP:LISTN due to a lack of secondary sources. The sources cited here along with the one in the article are all primary. Let'srun (talk) 00:50, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. LISTN asks that "Delta State Statesmen in the NFL draft" be discussed significantly in IRS as a topic in itself; separate sources on individual Statesmen in the draft are not sufficient. JoelleJay (talk) 05:25, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator comment: You're the one who de-prodded all of my nominations, so you don't get to complain now that they're at AFD, which is where nominations go when the PROD has been removed. I'm categorically opposed to AfDs without a proper BEFORE, so I would argue for keep (while knowing this is not a !vote). This footballer, who seems to have never played in the top 3 tiers in Italy or top 4 tiers in England, was deemed non-notable in an AfD discussion in 2020. I can't find signicant coverage in reliable sources published since then that would suggest he is now notable – per WP:GNG, as WP:NFOOTBALL is obsolete. The article content is not the same as the version deleted in 2020, so WP:CSD#G4 does not apply. Complex/Rational 17:28, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not convinced that any of the new sources in this discussion address the previous reasons for deletion. Those that offer more than trivial coverage are of questionable reliability as addressed several times above; The Sun, Daily Mail and Wordpress are not acceptable sources for BLPs and do not confer notability in any case. D-Flo27 (talk) 07:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Asian Games, SEA Games and "Wushu Championships" do not constitute enough weight in martial arts to warrant a wiki page. We have to rely on WP:GNG and subject needs to have significant coverage in independent and reliable media outlet. Lekkha Moun (talk) 06:56, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Really? The Asian Games and the SEA Games are the biggest tournaments in their regions. There are other Asian martial artists who have claimed notability through these tournaments such as Agatha Wong, Sun Peiyuan, Naorem Roshibina Devi, and a lot more. D-Flo27 (talk) 03:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you read on the top of WP:WPMA/N, it states that this is " an essay on notability". It is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guidelines and in no way supersedes WP:BIO. Therefore as of right now, their discipline "Wushu" do not have established notability guidelines. I have not taken a look at the three other subjects you mentioned, but the only way for them to have a stand alone article is by meeting WP:GNG. As for Jean Claude Saclag, routine coverage of events and lack of WP:SIGCOV

, I don't see indication that we have the type of coverage required to meet WP:GNG or WP:ANYBIO. Best regards.

  • Weak Delete He's definitely had some success, but I don't think enough to show he's WP notable. Coverage basically consists of results reporting and coverage of him wanting to turn pro--all of which seems fairly typical. His three SEA gold medals in kickboxing were apparently as an amateur and WP:NKICK specifically states "Kickboxers who have an amateur background exclusively are not notable unless the person has been the subject examined in detail (more than a single paragraph) in several reliable third-party sources (at least four), excluding local publications." Saclag appears to fail that criteria. The fact that others have articles with similar achievements falls under WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. His bronze at the wushu world championships is good, but the Sanda World Cup is an invitational event for 8 fighters per division and carries less weight (at least to me). I've held off voting because I was hoping other references might come to light, but right now I'm just not seeing him meet WP:ANYBIO or WP:GNG. Papaursa (talk) 02:41, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing has been written that suggests notability, and any argument like there being sources that are full-length can shake the elephant in the room, the Catch-22 if you will: if this player is so notable, why isn't he playing? He's played zero minutes this season in Belgium's amateur third division. He has no international appearances, and in all due respect it's easier to be chosen for Thailand than for Brazil or Spain. He's 22 this month, so if he's some special player who passes WP:GNG without any professional appearances, when are they going to come? I know people like to make articles about teenagers at big clubs, based on hype press, but a 22-year-old at an amateur Belgian club is clearly a different kettle of fish. While I disagree with the old WP:NFOOTY regulation that a player was notable as soon as they made one professional appearance, it's a good measure at least. Also bear in mind that [90] this source comes from King Power, the Thai company that owns his Belgian club, so it is not independent anyway. Additionally, the creator made this article as an incomprehensible quote farm from Google Translate, suggesting an unfamiliarity with Thai sources. Based on Google Translate: source 1 is brief coverage about 4 Thai players playing in Belgium; source 2 is not independent as per the nom; source 3 is paywalled; source 4 is routine transfer coverage; and source 5 is brief coverage about him playing for Thailand under-23. Where is the significant coverage? GiantSnowman 20:19, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know how you interpreted the first source to be "brief coverage about 4 Thai players playing in Belgium", it is about him and most of the text is solely about his background alone. The third source is also not paywalled. The fourth source is sedifnityl not "routine transfer coverage" since he joined the team much earlier and it goes into his background as well. Clearly sigifficant young player in Thailand with ongoing career who has played for the Thaialnd olympic team and is one of few players abroad. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 21:19, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
An Olympic team is an under-23 team. Footballers at the Olympics get some coverage, but per Football at the 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament, the only Thai going there at all is a VAR. As I said before, it's not hard to play senior football for Thailand, so if this guy is so great, why isn't he? Why are we treating someone as an exceptional promise for the future if he can't play for Thailand or for a third-division Belgian club when he's 22? Is that really an "ongoing career"? Unknown Temptation (talk) 23:05, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I said before, the sources are good. Your other argument doesnt make sense because there are lots of notable footballers with good sources with Wikipedia pages who have not played for Thailand and saying its "not hard to play for Thailand" is completely dismissive. On the contrary, he is considered skilled enough to play abroad, which few Thai players do. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 20:49, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I know people like to make articles about teenagers at big clubs, based on hype press – that may be the case, but I'm not sure there's any policy-based guidance that defines "hype press" or categorises them as unreliable for the GNG's purposes. That said, the Ballthai article appears to be the only in-depth piece of independent coverage. The others are brief updates and short interviews. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:14, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the Ballthai one, the other sources contain secondary coverage like "showed impressive form... is a versatile player in Midfield position Able to play both offense and defense. His highlight is his sharp reading of the game. And the interception is quite accurate. He is the third generation product of the Fox Hunt program" etc. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 11:03, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, they're brief. Maybe they could be considered significant taken together, but that's up to interpretation; I'm not yet convinced either way. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:00, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Subject lacks the WP:SIGCOV to meet the WP:GNG. Let'srun (talk) 14:55, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The previous nomination closed as no consensus 56 days ago. Possibly a little soon for a renomination, but there is no requirement that a person wait any amount of time after a NC close. Frank Anchor 16:35, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Without a proper rationale, it's hard to consider your vote when the time comes to close this discussion. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:02, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think by referring to the prior AFD, AA is implying that their rationale there still applies: 64 matches at the highest domestic level, likely to be coverage in Pakistan too. Unlike western media archives (like Gale, BNA, Trove), Pakistan print media remains largely non-digitalized. Common sense should dictate that in cases where a large number of matches are played by a cricketer, they are likely to be notable. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:26, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep (copying my vote from the previous AFD, which still applies in full). The subject played 64 matches at the highest domestic level. Seems like a case where WP:COMMONSENSE needs to prevail, even if the references aren't quite to the level of GNG. Frank Anchor 16:33, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep My comments remain the same as the previous AfD. It is highly likely that there is offline sourcing or non-English language sourcing that is difficult to access that would pass the subject for WP:GNG given the career he had. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 17:59, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep read the last AFD, fully concur with the keep voters there. Most likely passes WP:GNG Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:31, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom fails WP:SIGCOV. No proof offered - per WP:NCRIC cricketers who have played at the highest domestic level, or in the lower levels of international cricket, may have sufficient coverage about them to justify an article, but it should not be assumed to exist without further proof.. Closing admin should ignore keep votes that couldn't find any significant coverage. 103.125.122.179 (talk) 00:09, 6 May 2024 (UTC) 103.125.122.179 (talk) has made few or no other edits outside this topic. [reply]
    • And likewise, unless a convincing explanation can be offered, this comment by an IP that has never edited before and is likely a WP:SOCK should be discounted; not to mention that NCRIC is a guideline and common sense is allowed to be used. BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:34, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment about the relisting while taking no sides: On the one hand, the sock suggestion is serious. On the other hand, all information as of this relisting comes only from a single source: CricketArchive. Even if the self-proclaimed "most comprehensive, searchable and trusted cricket database in the world" turns out to be valid and reliable, a notable individual should pop up in other sources as well. If other valid sources worth adding exist, great. If not, that may pose a problem. It would be nice for this not to end in another "no consensus" again so soon after the last one. I'm saying this here because it seems a bit long for a formal relisting comment. Doczilla Ohhhhhh, no! 08:17, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, per the last AFD (should not have been renominated so soon and I question how the nom came across it) and my rationale there. We need to use common sense. Unless someone can prove that some source from the era in Pakistan was searched in, then one cannot claim that this fails GNG – from my comment at the last AFD: it does seem the best option to be on the side of [common sense] for someone who seems ... to have played 64 top-tier matches in the fifth-most populous country in the world in its most popular sport. It is highly unlikely a person of such accomplishments would not have gained any coverage. I also question how four valid "keeps" plus one "delete from a sock" – which should be given no weight – equals "relist"... BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:31, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ASSUMEGOODFAITH, and as of today the IP has not been blocked. Consensus changes and one of the bolded keep votes didn't reference any policy. [User:Let'srun|Let'srun]] (talk) 18:17, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just because the IP has not been blocked does not mean the almost certain sock should be given full weight. Common sense is absolutely a policy. Also, if you think my concerns about the nom are unfounded, would you tell me exactly how you came across this article, then? BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:57, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    WP:AOBF. I also wasn't referring to that vote. Let'srun (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What were you referring to, then? BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:09, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    The first vote. Let'srun (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I guess I missed the "one of" part from "one of the bolded keep votes didn't reference any policy" – though I think the !vote implied that the rationale of keeping per common sense at the last AFD still applied, as I said above. Still think AA's !vote should be given weight. BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:20, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: CricketArchive is a directory, not a secondary source. WP:MUSTBESOURCES is a flimsy argument at the best of times, but for a BLP, it's a non-argument. Without independent secondary sources providing SIGCOV for this BLP, we don't really have any options. Owen× 15:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • We are allowed to use common sense. It is invalid to argue the article fails notability when no one has searched in Pakistani sources whatsoever! BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:13, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      Yeah, that's exactly the MUSTBESOURCES I was talking about. Owen× 16:18, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It simply makes no sense to delete articles when no one has searched for coverage. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:19, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well then, perhaps you should rewrite the WP:N and WP:BLP policies to a version that makes more sense to you, BeanieFan11. As they are written now, unless and until we find those sources, we can't have an article about anything, let alone a living person. Owen× 16:27, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      That's why IAR / common sense exists. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:27, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Who needs all those pesky policies and gnarly guidelines when we have our WP:IAR trump card in our back pocket, right? Owen× 16:32, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Notability is a guideline; Editors should generally follow it, though exceptions may apply. This is one of the rare exceptions. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:35, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IAR is not a trump card, but an understanding that Wikipedia’s policies are not perfect and there are cases in which the rules need not rigidly apply. OwenX, as an admin and consistent contributor to AFD/DRV discussions, should know this, even if he doesn’t agree with this particular application of IAR. Frank Anchor 00:30, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. CricketArchive is a stats directory; every single one of the sources cited for this BLP is a prose-less table of primary data and therefore is unacceptable per N, OR, and BLP (Exercise extreme caution in using primary sources. ... Where primary-source material has been discussed by a reliable secondary source, it may be acceptable to rely on it to augment the secondary source, subject to the restrictions of this policy, no original research, and the other sourcing policies.) . Per NSPORT, the burden is on those wanting to keep to establish there is high likelihood of the subject meeting GNG; to do that, NSPORT requires a source of IRS SIGCOV be cited in the article. No one has demonstrated such a source exists in the 4+ weeks + 60 days this subject has been in focus. IAR is meant to be employed in exceptional circumstances, not for literally every athlete meeting some participation criterion who "might" have offline sources, which is how it is regularly being used by certain keep !voters. If playing some number of first-class domestic matches -- which are not the top tier of cricket -- was a reasonable threshold for presuming GNG we would have guidelines stating as much rather than a guideline explicitly stating that sufficient coverage is not expected for that level of play: Additionally, cricketers who have played at the highest domestic level, or in the lower levels of international cricket,[a] may have sufficient coverage about them to justify an article, but it should not be assumed to exist without further proof.
At some point the repeated invocation of deprecated notability guidelines disguised as IAR becomes disruptive. !Votes that are devoid of any P&G basis -- and especially ones that actively defy P&Gs -- should not just be automatically given weight, much less elevated to the same weight as P&G-based !votes, any time the !voter mentions the magic phrase "IAR". That completely defeats the purpose of consensus policy stating Responses indicating individual explanations of positions using Wikipedia policies and guidelines are given the highest weight. JoelleJay (talk) 20:25, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It’s funny that JoelleJay suggests that Responses indicating individual explanations of positions using Wikipedia policies and guidelines are given the highest weight, but seems to forget that WP:IAR in fact IS A POLICY, and the fundamental policy behind one of Wikipedia’s five pillars. The principles and spirit matter more than literal wording, and sometimes improving Wikipedia requires making exceptions (emphasis mine). Having an article on a person who played 64 matches at the highest domestic level can easily be considered one of these exceptions. Frank Anchor 22:56, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Albert Tjåland

Albert Tjåland (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

This succumbed to an AFD before, but since then it has been recreated due to "coverage in international media". It happened at a time when the player was looking to be moving up in the football hierarchy, but with all due respect to the player, the career has stagnated, which I think allows us to see the subject in a clearer light. In an encyclopedic sence, Albert Tjåland fails WP:NOTINHERITED, WP:SUSTAINED, WP:TOOSOON, WP:SIRS and as a consequence WP:SPORTCRIT.

  • ABT was a child whom international media took a novelty interest to.
  • His football career has not panned out. He plays on the fourth tier, has never played a league game for a first team, only reaching as far as appearing 6 times on Bryne's bench - as well as playing a cup game for Molde, which for WP:PEACOCK reasons is called "a professional debut". Nothing he has done remotely resembles a significant accomplishment within sport.
  • While there was coverage in many countries, there reports about various accomplishments in children's games lack significance, and was all the more packed with speculation and hot air. A big breakthrough is not currently looming on the horizon, and while it might of course happen one day, we have the too soon guideline for a reason.
  • The press coverage was exclusively motivated by him having a famous relative. Albert and Erling have similar names and likenesses, and joined the same club (Molde) as a youth player. Take the relative out of the equation, and what are you left with? Notability is not inherited from relatives. Geschichte (talk) 09:34, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My further thoughts are that the keep opinions are annulled by their lack of explanation and non-existing response as to the nomination statement, which detailed a failure of several policies. "significant coverage" and "many good sources" are unfounded opinions; "ongoing career with pro Norwegian top flight team" is false, Tjåland has an ongoing career with a semi-pro B team on the fourth tier. • Delete. Each of the keep assertions in this process make claims of notability. Let's examine those claims: 1) Passes WP:GNG with WP:Significant coverage? The burden is on those wanting to keep, and this page is wanting sourcing which directly details, as WP:SPORTSPERSON requires. 2) Young player with ongoing career with pro Norwegian top flight team and many good sources? So what? None of those adjectives or sources directly details the subject in multiple reliable sources independent of the subject. We have stats and routine sportsnews mostly linked to a relative. This is a biography for a living person. Delete. BusterD (talk) 14:24, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
