Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/France

Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to France. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|France|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to France. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

Out of 11 references provided, YouTube, IMDb (2), Personal website(2) (fontainemedia, as mentioned in the article) (2). Except for ref 10, none of the rest 4 refs mention the subject. Subject fails the basic criteria (WP:BASIC) for all 8 mentioned professional including WP:NACTOR and WP:ENTERTAINER. ANUwrites 04:23, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- WP:COI issue, several claims in the article are written by someone with a close alias to the subject, You can't find and source mentioning them (i.e career and biography), that's why such a short article is asked to verify 8 claims to show where such claims came from, even with all sources in the article or additional sources provided by @Mushy Yank, none can prove those claims or is wikipedia a gossip hub now?
- For entertainers, they should have any notable work or achievement, well, the subject is an actress, choreographer and dancer, what are her important achievements of her career (i.e any notable film or show) or maybe accomplishments such as awards and accordance. Does she have any? If she doesn't have any achievement or work mentioned or seen, why is she considered important to keep this article?
- @Mushy Yank proved her notability through references from the web and not personal blogs, youtube links that were used as references in the article. Should we accept terrible articles because we believe subjects might be notable somehow in the web, What's the point of having draftspace and sandboxes?
- The article fails even WP:BASIC, 90% of references in the article are not reliable, any editor can inspect and get that in minutes. i.e self published pdfs, personal blogs, YouTube links, podcast interviews e.t.c.
- Let's be honest here, with all Polish references, isn't the article suitable in Polish wikipedia? Most of EnWiki readers have understanding of Enlang and expect to verify claims from EnEng sources, that's the point of having multi-lang wikis. This wikipedia isn't for her maybe when she becomes global sensation. Inshort, she isn't notable but a local artist, with first and second references proving she's now heading to perform out there for the first time from local venues. Deletion is so crucial here.ANUwrites 01:09, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kindly unbold your !vote. You are the nominator and you are already considered "!voting" delete and !voting twice is not permitted. Thank you. -Mushy Yank. 01:23, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- COI is supposed to be addressed through editing, not deletion. Again, WP:AFDISNOTCLEANUP.
- No, that's not how notability works. Entertainers can pass either GNG or NENT. They don't have to pass both.
- This is something that should be addressed through editing, not deletion. The article isn't so terrible that TNT is warranted.
- This is a complete misunderstanding of WP:BASIC. Please read it carefully. Again, the terrible sources are an issue that should be addressed through editing, not deletion.
- No, that's not how notability works. Please read through WP:GNG. Sources of any and all languages count for notability as long as they are independent, reliable and provide SIGCOV. Somebodyidkfkdt (talk) 11:19, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: please note that the nominator seems to admit that the subject's notability is "proven". If that is helpful, I am inviting the nominator to read WP:AFDNOTCLEANUP.-Mushy Yank. 02:06, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, the nominator did not admit anywhere that the subject's notability is "proven". This user is trying to play the insinuating card. The nominator gave 5 cold facts as to why the subject is never notable which stand unchallenged. ANUwrites 05:32, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
!!.....Just read what you yourself wrote..."Mushy Yank proved her notability through references from the web and not personal blogs"...... So no, this user is not "trying to play the insinuating card" (:D). I've tried to improve the page, by the way and you're very welcome. At this point, I have no further comments. -Mushy Yank. 07:11, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Martina Ononiwu (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

This article is largely based on 4 sources about her being "awarded the US Presidential Lifetime Achievers Award (Presidential Volunteer Service Award) (PVSA) by American President Joe Biden." This is apparently only reported in Nigerian sources, not in any official source, and she isn't listed on the official list[1]. The award is apparently only intended for "U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents", so not for a Nigerian in France. If the sources have this basic fact, the premisse for the articles, wrong, then they aren't reliable sources to start with but just repeating something spoonfed by the subject or someone trying to promote them. Fram (talk) 09:33, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete I've just done a deep dive into this. The President's Volunteer Service Award has various grades, and is given to numerous people every year, and is not generally notable. Only at the highest level, people receiving the the President's Call to Service Award (also called the "President's Lifetime Achievement Award"), may be notable for receiving the award. But even that is doubtful, as recipients are usually notable already in their own right. In any case, it's pretty clear that Martina Ononiwu did not receive the President's Call to Service Award, as there are no US-based notable sources testifying to this. A search for the name "Martina Ononiwu" is the news sources yields nothing except Nigerian news sources stating that she was given the President's Lifetime Achievement Award. It is highly unlikely that a person would be honored with the President's Lifetime Achievement Award, without leaving any sort of trace in the news sources. --LK (talk) 11:08, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Appears to be a HOAX based on the fact that USA sources mention nothing about the awards. I don't see notability otherwise. Oaktree b (talk) 16:43, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The President's Volunteer Service Award is notable. If it is not, it won't have a page in Wikipedia. Very clear. Royalrumblebee (talk) 19:41, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but the pages listing the winners of the award don't list Ononiwu, and she wouldn't be eligible in the first place. The notability that is disputed is not that of the award, but of Õnoniwu. Fram (talk) 08:18, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete : The article fails to meet Wikipedia's General Notability Guideline WP:GNG as it solely focuses on a single event without providing significant coverage of the topic. The subject's notability is questionable, given the award by the United States, despite being based in France with Nigerian origins. There is no international media coverage, with most coverage coming from Nigerian local and national dailies. This lack of international coverage and reliance on local publications gives the impression that the article may be sponsored or promotional in nature, further undermining its notability.Royalesignature (talk). 17:04, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are many notable people already in Wikipedia who have little or no foreign press mentioning them, but are very well covered in reliable sources in their home countries, especially movie actors and actresses. See Indian actors etc. So this argument is not very strong. GNG mentions national publications as notable, especially if these sources have pages themselves in Wikipedia, such as Vanguard (Nigeria),The Nation (Nigeria), and The Guardian (Nigeria), all in which Martina Ononiwu was significantly covered. I rather think the nomination for deletion is too hasty and I think it should have been an article placed for redrafting as I am already seeing more sources that are reliable. Royalrumblebee (talk) 19:39, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as this [[2]] does not list her, nor this [[3]], so this at least appears to be false. Slatersteven (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Having done thorough check of the references, I realized that some of the sources in the article are personal websites, here, here, link to google drive (which was used 5 times in the article) is a pdf document written by an individual this. Other reliable sources mentioned the award and being a strategist only. Aderiqueza (talk) 21:49, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: So she's a business consultant in France? We take out the award (which seems to be a false statement), what's left... A consultant with no coverage in France and only in Nigeria. They seem to cover everyone and his or her brother in media there, so that's not terribly notable. Oaktree b (talk) 22:34, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete on the grounds that once you except WP:NEWSORGINDIA (because Nigeria has the same issue) type sources there is nothing. PARAKANYAA (talk) 12:41, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete: An article about a non-notable subject that is well-written but relies on unverifiable information to establish notability. Since this and this did not list the subject on their website, it is definitely not an awardee. Ibjaja055 (talk) 08:20, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete: The article is not really ready for inclusion on Wikipedia as the subject is not notable enough. Wår (talk) 06:38, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:ORG. Every source given is from the organisation itself or a Maoist blog site, except one by the conservative tabloid Diario Correo, which mentions the French organisation in passing. Online searches in English, French, and Spanish return zero reliable sources, and I doubt such sources will be found in print offline. Yue🌙 06:35, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - This is a tricky one, but I am leaning keep. First thing to note is that there are at least 8 schools named for Jean Mermoz [6], but even French Wikipedia does not have a page for this one. Newspaper sources exist as above, but news reporting is a primary source and does not count towards notability. I cannot see anything that goes beyond reporting and into analysis. However, when you look at mentions in books, there are a lot. Many are directories, at least one is self published, but some at least speak to a widespread recognition of school programmes, such as the mentions in this book [7] talking about Astronomy as an educational subject (presumably because this school has such a programme - their programme does seem to be significant). Similar treatment around humanities [8]. But you can't write an article from such brief mentions. But there are several books that reference a paper:
    * Wiederkehr F., Goetschy O., Wunschel R., (2008). Projet stéréolithographie. Saint Louis: Lycée Jean Mermoz.
As indicated, the school published this themselves, and it does not appear in any journal, but it can be read here [9] and is cited in the likes of [10]. Work at the school is also referenced on page 87 of this doctoral thesis: Microstéréolithographie de céramiques (2018). The problem remains that there is little to write an article from based on the sources found so far, but I have a feeling that a school with this kind of output and this kind of profile must be notable. I really wish we could find a history of the school though.
ETA this source [11] does give information that we can write an article from. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 11:47, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep As per sirfurboy and as per the articles I found. I'm thinking that the school's size is a big deal in the Alsace region. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:33, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
