I noticed your interest in portals. Here is what has been going on behind-the-scenes with them...

Currently, there are about 1500 portals, comprised of 150,000 pages in portal space, the rest beyond the 1500 being subpages. Most of those subpages contain an excerpt, copied and pasted from some article. Such excerpts never change, and they go stale over time (no longer matching the original source material).

The Portal WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and has grown to 68 members. We've been busy redesigning the portal model so that portals will not need all those subpages.

The design concept called "selective transclusion", which is used for migrating excerpts (moving them to the base page), does so by displaying part of an article the same as a template. An added benefit of this is that it also keeps them fresh, by always showing the current version of the content that is transcluded.

We are also working on ways to make excerpted content, and listed entries, dynamic, so that the material or links shown automatically change over time without the intervention of an editor. Selected articles, could be set up to change daily, for example, to present a different article each day. This can even be made to show a different article every time a user visits the page. Currently, we can do this from a set list. We're trying to make it so that the list is updated automatically from an external source that is regularly maintained.

Other automated solutions are being sought or developed for each section type of portals. To automatically update and archive news, did you know entries, and so on.

Once we get a fully automated design worked out, it will be applied to all the portals that do not have dedicated maintainers. This will reduce the amount of maintenance they need. A single editor will then be able to watch over far more portals than before, ideally, with each portal taking up only a single page in portal space.

The Portal WikiProject is dedicated to updating, upgrading, and maintaining the entire portal system and every portal in it.

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Hi, this edit wasn't a good idea. First off, {{cite book}} supports having |year= separate from |date=. Typically, they'd be used separately when the date needs to be formatted in a different way to how it's displayed in short footnotes. True, in this particular case, that wasn't needed (the citation had two parameters only because I had originally formatted it for use in an article that uses the harv style). However, in these circumstances, the more precise value should have been left, and that's "c. 1979". Keeping the value "1979" is wrong as it implies the year is exact, when that's not in fact the case. – Uanfala (talk) 15:46, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You changed the dates, in the references, from yyyy-mm-dd to long form dates. Style guides recommend using long form dates in the body of articles. Style guides recommend against using yyyy-mm-dd - except where brevity is an advantage (paraphrasing from memory). Style guides explicitly say the use of yyyy-mm-dd in tables, AND REFERENCES, is encouraged. You didn't explain why you felt it was necessary to ignore the style guide's advice. • Author wikilinks are handled in separate parameters. The links are still there, just in |author-link= (or its aliases).
• The template {{Use mdy dates}} (and {{Use dmy dates}}, for that matter) both force all dates to that format. You can change it back if you want using the |cs1-dates= parameter in those two templates. Personally speaking, though, moving everything to that format helps me use AutoWikiBrowser to determine compliance with said tags. Plus, I just find the long dates more readable.

• Excuse me? Isn't the authorlink field only supposed to be used when someone thinks it is a good idea to put the author's name in surname, given name format, in the author field? Filling both an author and authorlink field, with the author's name, in given name surname order, is an unnecessary trigger for confusion, is redundant. I have never seen any other contributor write references this way, and I encourage you to stop doing so.

  As I noted elsewhere, there are strong reasons to hold back from introducing changes for purely esthetic reasons. Every time you make a change you introduce the possibility that you will introduce an error. Over and above the possibility of introducing errors, it is misleading. Unlike in the golden age of the wikipedia, almost none of the edits contributors make to articles today are to actual intellectual content. Too small a fraction of today's contributions are made to keep the wikipedia's content - what we tell our readers - accurate and up to date. When you make unnecessary changes you add to the burden of the small number of contributors who are working to keep the wikipedia up to date. When they return to an article they edited months or years ago, and perform a diff to see whether some new development has been included in the article's actual content, what they typically find is that enormous changes have been made to the article. What they typically find is that it takes them a long time to confirm that all, or almost all, of the edits since their last visit were to the article's meta-data, or were, frankly, trivial. Please don't add to this burden by making unnecessary changes for purely esthetic reasons.

• If you use automated tools that are not full policy compliant, then the solution is to stop from blindly authorizing them to follow every change they suggest, and apply human judgement when applying them, over-riding them when necessary. You should not be unnecessarily rewriting yyyy-mm-dd format dates, when they are in references (or tables) as yyyy-mm-dd format dates are explicitly allowed within references. Hi, I repaired the archive-url on Robert Jordan that you flagged as failing verification. Just a tip on archive URLs, I've found that if I go back in the wayback machine to a date close to the original URL access date, I can usually find the correct content that an article used as a source. There is a very well accepted maintenance principle, in engineering, and other technical disciplines... "if it is not broke, don't 'fix' it".

I think you lapsed from it, in this edit.

We have complicated guideline and manuals of style. Overlapping wikidocuments address date formats. On the strength of those wikidocuments some contributors routinely re-write dates. These wikidocuments do, generally, discourage the use of dates in the yyyy-mm-dd format, and there are contributors who routinely re-write those into monthname, dd, yyyy format, everywhere they find them. I am puzzled as to why you would unwrap the [[]] around wikilinks, in references, adding an authorlink field, instead.

Are you familiar with the well accepted maintenance principle of "if it is not broke, don't 'fix' it"?
