Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Africa

Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Africa. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Africa|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Africa. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

2017 South Sudan Supreme Airlines Antonov An-26 crash (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Per WP:NOTNEWS. From what I've been able to find, only primary sources exist on the event with barely any/no secondary sources existing on the event. The event does not have in-depth nor continued coverage with coverage only briefly occurring in the aftermath of the crash. No lasting effects nor long-term impacts have been demonstrated as a result of the accident. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 14:47, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge . I believe due to there being no notable injuries nor fatalities that this incident is not notable, the article should be merged into An-26 Accidents and Incidents along with the shortening of the accidents and incidents catalouge in South Sudan Supreme Airlines for this accident, i'll try to lengthen the original catalouge in the An-26 page to compensate for the shortening of the original catalouge. Lolzer3000 (talk) 18:00, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would say that it should be merged per WP:NOTNEWS. hamster717🐉(discuss anything!🐹✈️my contribs🌌🌠) 22:20, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a merge target in mind? Aviationwikiflight (talk) 05:32, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment My apoligies for not making the merge target clear, i'd like to merge it into the accident and incidents page for the An-26, since its already in the catalouge for Wau Airport, i'll expand the Wau Airport entry with basic information from this article to pertain it. Lolzer3000 (talk) 14:26, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay, no need to apologize. I understood the merge target you proposed, I was just wondering what merge target user Hamterous1 had in mind.
And unrelated to that, welcome back :) Aviationwikiflight (talk) 16:36, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep, the town's name in Arabic; "بكرو" can be translated as "Bogué" which is a real place (Google Maps) There is also an account of a visit to the town on this blog. Microplastic Consumer (talk) 21:01, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Arabic wiki entry linked to this article, w:ar:بكرو, says (Google translated)
"Adl Bakrou is a district and municipality located in Hodh Ech Chargui State in Mauritania".
The Arabic wiki entry linked to Adel Bagrou, w:ar:عدل بكرو, says (Google translated)
"Adel Bagrou (French: Adel Bagrou), an administrative center in the Hodh El Chargui region , in the southeastern region of Mauritania, located on the border with Mali , in 2000 its population was 36,007..."
The place is clearly the sizable town and commune in Hodh Ech Chargui Region. (The Bogué (بوكى) found on the map by a Google search is spelled differently in Arabic and is far to the west of Hodh Ech Chargui Region.)
Alternatively, move to Adel Bagrou (Commune) and clean up, and change Adel Bagrou to only discuss the town. There are plenty of results from a search on عدل_بكرو with information like: "Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal Messoud, laid the foundation stone today, Friday, in the Adl Bakrou district for the road linking the cities of Adl Bakrou and Amerj in the Hodh El Chargui state." 1. Has had a single or album on any country's national music chart: in this case, subject had the album titled Dzanja Lalemba that was the bestseller 14 years ago countrywide. Subject is also the pioneer of Malawi Contemporary Music and one of the country's notable musician [1]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-soldier-set-for-stage-reunion/.
  2. Has released two or more albums on a major record label: subject has released 13 albums under the renowed and the first band in Malawi, the Zembani Band, owned by Lucius Banda [2]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-soldier-set-for-stage-reunion/, [3]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-rolls-back-hands-of-time/ . I found this that talks about subject. I also found records in printed books, see here, and this in Dutch , this too, etc. To me this provides GNG that can be used to sustain the article per WP:NEXIST.--Tumbuka Arch (talk) 11:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BLPsources-tagged for two years. Failure of WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG. Games in Europe came in lower divisions, except for 44 minutes in Albania's highest league. I wasn't able to find significant coverage of the subject in reliable sources. Some of the sources linked in the article (like the first and third) don't even mention "Godenu". The fourth source mentions Godenu only once, as the "Gbi-Godenu Volta Region IFAD/SCIMP Project", seemingly a different thing. The second source does mention Godenu, but it's pretty brief. Other sources linked aren't reliable or aren't independent. I can find mentions of Godenu, like in this article, but that's it. toweli (talk) 16:21, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No satisfactory sources in the article, and a quick search didn't find any. Note: this was prompted by a request at the help desk on behalf of the subject. ColinFine (talk) 18:03, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also found this in the help desk, for me personally, I suggest keeping the article, my reason is because she co-founded (is that correct?) the biggest law firm in Kenya, and is one of the top 40 most popular women from Kenya.

User:TheNuggeteer, more important than your opinion on this subject is how you would counter the reasons offered in the deletion rationale. What sources support your claim of notability? Please be specific. Liz Read! Talk! 05:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, sources 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are the sources which prompt me to give the "keep" reply. She does not seem notable outside the business, I'll give you that, but being one of the top 40 women from a country is enough for me.🍗TheNuggeteer🍗 05:46, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheNuggeteer, please read what Wikipedia means by notable. 2 and 6 do not mention her. 3 and 7 (which are the same source) has a potted biography, but is mostly quoting her. 5 gives me a 404, but judging by its title, I would be amazed if it had significant coverage of her. 8 and 9 give potted biographies, but are almost certainly not independent.
Sources used to establish notability need to meet all three criteria in WP:42. ColinFine (talk) 15:38, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • My comments only: Firstly, several of the sources are actually the same. Secondly, appearing in a list of “40 under 40” is not the same thing as “one of the 40 most popular women.” Finally, we need to decide whether being a partner in Dentons, by far the largest law firm in the World, creates a legal notability by itself. This discussion might have to go more than a few days. In the meantime, please ping me if you find additional sources. Bearian (talk) 08:50, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. Non-notable at this time, agreeing with the reasons that the sources used in the article and an online search of the name do not show significant coverage in independent sources. Another thing she is a member, doesn't look like a partner at Denton's through its acquisition of Hamilton Harrison & Mathews Law Firm; additionally, notability is not inherited, as is the case with her and Dentons Law Firm. WP:BLP1E. Merge content where appropriate into 2004 Madrid train bombings, then redirect the page. Longhornsg (talk) 06:05, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment judging from the Spanish article, it's likely that if the main article was brought to FA level comprehensiveness a biography should be written on him per size split reasons, given that he is one of the key figures in one of the deadliest terror attacks ever. So, if this is merged, I would not oppose it being split out again at some time. PARAKANYAA (talk) 07:34, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, he does have (not counting life sentences), the third longest prison sentence of all time. I feel that is perhaps a claim to notability. From what I'm looking at an article could definitely be written on him - BLP1E is for low level crimes, not ones that kill nearly 200 people. The other two conditions of the policy are the person being a "low profile individual" (he is not) and that the event not be a SIGNIFICANT historical event in which the role of the person is well documented (he is). So he does not fail BLP1E. With more notorious cases there are often the sources to write both, and the reason he is the one with an article is because he seemed to be one of the more prominent figures. Same reason we have an article on Mohamed Atta. So either keep or merge for now. PARAKANYAA (talk) 08:12, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete or redirect to 2004 Madrid train bombings. Besides the WP:BLP considerations, absolutely no need for a separate page for this content per WP:PAGEDECIDE. Longhornsg (talk) 06:04, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge to the main article. Not actually as many BLP issues as I thought from the title, just a list of those convicted + one high profile very studied false arrest. The main article actually does not have a list of the men convicted of directly perpetrating the attack. The other sections are perhaps unnecessary but I feel a list of the main perpetrators would improve the main article. It appears unsourced but it is sourced to the Guardian article. A Stub-class assessed article, Not notable to be on mainspace, from the references provided, article fails WP:SIGCOV, no in-depth information as regards to weather it should be kept on Wikipedia as a stand alone article, there are little references from secondary sources, seams very promotional and I think it should be deleted, all I see is mentions and references about social media “Tiktok” which has nothing to do with Notability on Wikipedia. I may expand the article myself soon, using open sources (and if anyone has access to The Wikipedia Library, I would appreciate their help expanding the article with sources they can find as well). LR.127 (talk) 17:49, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete or keep . The article is 16 years old. No one is going to fix an article that old if it is draftspace so at that point that's just putting it in limbo. PARAKANYAA (talk) 10:16, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: While this article needs expansion for clarity, there are multiple publications to keep it from being deleted:

I believe that this could be considered as significant coverage. Best, Reading Beans 06:43, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep: The essence of AfD is to determine whether a subject merits a standalone page, which in this case it is clear that Egbema tribe merits one. For God’s sake, AfD is not cleanup and articles shouldn’t be sent to AfD if they are clearly notable. It is also clear that a BEFORE wasn’t done. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 07:23, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"It is clear that Egbema tribe merits [a standalone page]" ... "they are clearly notable" how so?
I find this comment a bit vague, sorry - could you say more? Cheers. LR.127 (talk) 19:59, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not have to say anything more. AfD is not a place to tell us an article needs more sources; it is a place to determine whether a subject notable or not. You have to read the WP:AFD page to familiarise yourself with what it is about. The Egbema tribe in Nigeria is clear-cut notable ethnic group, you're not a Nigerian and as such you cannot tell. I hate seeing things like this at AfD, it utterly sucks. If an article relies on largely or entirely on a single source then tag it, if it has already been tagged and you come across it, you either fix it yourself or you leave it alone, or with a good faith, ask at a noticeboard for example the talk page of WikiProject Nigeria where you might find users who would be willing to do the work of researching and finding more details. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 22:26, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. There are several pages about the Egbema in one of the papers in the book The Izon of the Niger Delta (Google link for convenience; if you have access to Muse via the Wikipedia Library or otherwise, then the whole book is accessible there). The book The Igbo and the Tradition of Politics also has a paper about "The Political Arrangement of the Egbema Community". Combined with the titles of some of the works given by Reading Beans above, it appears that there is WP:SIGCOV in reliable academic sources. --RL0919 (talk) 16:41, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed draftification, whcih leaves AfD as the route for articles with insufficient referencing and failing WP:GNG. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 20:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:NEVENT no lasting coverage. Cannot find any coverage of the event after July except for trivial one line mentions in articles discussing other attacks. Closest thing I could find was this: https://www.kormeeraha.com/2021/03/12/canadian-school-renamed-after-hodan-nalayeh/ but it is about a victim more than the attack.

Unfortunately hotel attacks are a common incident in Somalia and just aren't very notable. Could be merged into Hodan Nalayeh, al-Shabaab, or the Somali civil war Traumnovelle (talk) 04:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge to 2019 timeline of the Somali Civil War. Or redirect, it's already mentioned there. PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:18, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article was PROD'd but the tag was removed by the article's creator who is also the author of this book. Given that it is self-published, I don't believe it has been reviewed or meets WP:NBOOK. Obviously, COI involved here and all of the editor's content creation. I know that this is not a valid deletion rationale but I thought I'd point it out in this statement. Liz Read! Article originally created to promote this person; it has been toned down a little since then but it remains obvious that it is paraphrased from what was originally a self-authored bio. No evidence of notability. I'm tempted to tag A7/G11. Compassionate727 (T·C) 20:50, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not a notable model. No references that are non-trivial and non-promotional. Walsh90210 (talk) 01:06, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Point me to which references are "trivial" or "promotional" as last I checked, News24 is a South African news website, not PR Newswire. Marie Claire is a fashion magazine. V is a fashion magazine. CR Fashion Book is a fashion magazine and so on. None of them are providing trivia. They verified the work she's done and according to the sources… it's notable. Jalal has played in the lower levels of Qatar for most of his career and does not seem to meet WP:SPORTBASIC. My own Arabic searches yielded QFA, a passing mention, Al Arab, another passing mention, and Raya, which has a few sentences about him working hard in training and playing a few matches because the main goalkeeper was injured. I am not seeing enough significant coverage. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 13:30, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Anabwani I of Bunyoro (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This appears to be a hoax, or at the very least non-notable. The article was created by User:Anabwani2007, whose only edits consist of creating and editing this article, as well as adding a mention of Anabwani to Omukama of Bunyoro. None of the links presently given in the article even mention Anabwani. I wasn't able to find even a mention in reliable sources either. A Ugandan newspaper, Daily Monitor, mentions him in an article, but that's it (and their list is sourced to the monarchy's website anyway, where he's similarly merely mentioned once). toweli (talk) 19:16, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep note that the source used for this was likely oral, and his being mentioned in a literate source should be enough to put it beyond reasonable doubt of him being genuine
Kowal2701 (talk) 15:17, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only source stems back to an honours mill that just had a half-dozen articles deleted within the last month for self-published promo. How is this any different if it’s all stemming from an interested party? —Greens vs. Blacks (talk) 04:43, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
