Japanese Iraq Reconstruction and Support Group

The Japanese Iraq Reconstruction and Support Group page could use a rewrite. At least with putting sources on the units involved in the Japanese PKO mission into Iraq. Ominae (talk) 15:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tokoyama etymology

Hello everyone, I recently rewrote the article on tokoyama but I find that the terminology section lacks a bit of substance and I must admit that I'd like to know why tokoya (床屋) came to be called tokoyama (床山). Would you have an etymology dictionary to recommend? - OtharLuin (talk) 17:32, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

the sister project wiktionary has a pretty good dictionary, and you can use it to cross-reference kanji if it matters. (wikt:山 for example)If you want an external dictionary, you could use goo or jisho DarmaniLink (talk) 01:43, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately nothing conclusive. I'm going to leave the etymology section as it is - OtharLuin (talk) 08:14, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are examples of the word in documents from the Edo Period, but a short search did not yield any real answers on the origin of the term in the major dictionaries. The kabuki usage seems to be older than the sumo one in the available sources. There is an explanation that the use of yama relates to having so many customers that they were like a mountain, but that sounds like a just-so story to me. I think that given the paucity of information available, adding any specific explanation of the etymology to the article would end up being original research. Hello and thank you for your advice. I did come across this explanation but the source is more than dubious and my research hasn't turned up anything conclusive either. I'm going to leave the section as it is, as the sources don't seem serious enough to say anything more. - OtharLuin (talk) 08:15, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested merger

I suggest the merger of sashimino in to nobori for the reason that sashimino is the a term for Japanese joinery it is better explained in this comment titled cabinetmaking https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sashimono#%E6%8C%87%E3%81%97%E7%89%A9_=_Cabinetmaking Space772 (talk) 03:41, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an expert on this subject, but I don't think the examples shown at Sashimono are actually Nobori. As the name nobori implies, they have to be long and thin. Another option (if we take for granted that all of these subjects are inherently "Japanese") would be to use Umajirushi for the material currently at Sashimono (cf. ja:馬印). However, it's also possible just to make a hatnote on the current Sashimono article if there is another article this is actually in conflict with. The word sashimono itself has both meanings. Dekimasuよ! 03:53, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks Space772 (talk) 03:55, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
would it be ok for me to go and switch the names then? Space772 (talk) 03:58, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you mean moving the page to Umajirushi and creating a disambiguation page, the choices are either to consider it an uncontroversial move and be WP:BOLD, or to start a move discussion following the directions at WP:RM. I don't think Sashimono should just be an article on Japanese joinery, though; is there some other existing article you are trying to link to? If there is a move, the best result might be to have a disambiguation page at Sashimono. Dekimasuよ! 04:09, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seikei Zusetsu, Japanese agricultural encyclopedia

I just created an article for the Seikei Zusetsu. There is a well cited article on it on the Japanese Wikipedia. Any help with translating would be appreciated! Thriley (talk) 21:40, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Linking it to those articles by ILL would make it easier to reach btw (AlphaBetaGammsh (talk) 10:54, 30 January 2024 (UTC))[reply]
