File:HKundersecretaries1.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Ohconfucius (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Image fails WP:NFCC#1 and WP:NFCC#8 in the article that it is used in. It could be replaced by any image of the 24 newly appointed undersecretaries/assistants and the image itself is not discussed in the article, therefore lacking critical commentary. TLSuda (talk) 02:03, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's clearly a historical image – first appointments under a new system which is the subject of the article in question. Certainly there are other agency images out there, but there are no free ones in existence – if we can't use this one, we can't use any of the others. While the image itself isn't discussed in critical commentary, all the individuals are. This is equivalent to cast images that are allowed to be used under FU rationale in articles about television series, but it's already of such a low resolution that it's nigh impossible to distinguish the individuals' faces, so it's of no commercial value. In any event, the cabinet composition changed within weeks, so there's no question of there being this group of people together in a photograph again. -- Ohc ¡digame! 02:18, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Even if its not replaceable (which I disagree) it still must meet all of WP:NFCC#8 including there must be critical commentary. Currently, the image is solely being used for identification of the first group (not the only group) and therefore is not necessary to the understanding of the article at all. TLSuda (talk) 02:31, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I will take you up on that, and would be most grateful if you could find me a free one to replace this image. -- Ohc ¡digame! 04:34, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For WP:NFCC#1, you don't have to find one or have one readily availabe, one just has to be able to be created. And since it is used purely for identification, there are many other types of photos that could be used instead for identification. TLSuda (talk) 14:18, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete:
  1. Per WP:NFCC#1: Replaceable by a photograph of different undersecretaries and political assistants.
  2. Per WP:NFCC#8: Not critically discussed and doesn't assist in the understanding of the article in any way. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:44, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. An example of a fashion designer's work seems essential to understanding the article topic. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:15, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • However, there is no discussion about this photo of the designer's work, so the photo of the design fails WP:NFCC#8. It also fails WP:NFCC#1 as a different photograph easily could be created. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:24, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • There is discussion: "The 1968 suit shown here is a good example of Lycett Green's work for Blades, and was made from Lyon brocaded silk itself made in 1953. It was worn by Lycett Green himself and given to the Victoria and Albert Museum by him, where it appears in their fashion gallery." and a ref. No, a free one can't be created because the suit is not on display. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:29, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • WP:NFCC only allows you to use non-free images to support the text. In this case, it is instead the text which supports the image. You got it the wrong way around. The section discusses clothes produced by this guy in general, so any piece of clothing produced by him would provide as good understanding as any other piece of clothing. Also, it says that this particular piece of clothing was "given to the Victoria and Albert Museum by him, where it appears in their fashion gallery", so all you need to do is to visit "their fashion gallery" with a camera. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:47, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

          • I visited the V & A today. As I thought, it is not on display. The display in Room 40 has been changed to ladies fashion and wedding dresses. I asked a member of staff when the suit would be back on display (if ever) but they had no idea, so it is not possible to take our own photograph. I will continue to monitor that room but until the suit comes back, which could be years if ever, I think this is valid fair use. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:22, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fails either WP:NFCC#1 or WP:NFCC#8 if unfree as claimed. Claude-Jean Allouez, the subject of the image, died in 1689, so a modern copyrighted picture either has to be based on pure speculation, or on a contemporary image.

If this is based on a contemporary image, then it violates WP:NFCC#1 as the contemporary image could be used instead.

If this is based on pure speculation, then it violates WP:NFCC#8 as the picture doesn't say anything about what the person looked like. Stefan2 (talk) 14:27, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

keep because it is the only known image we can find of him. Redsky89 (talk) 14:30, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That is not how WP:NFCC works. If it is based on a public domain image, then WP:NFCC#1 requires you to locate that public domain image and use that instead. If the image is pure speculation, then WP:NFCC#8 tells that we can't use this image, since pure speculation provides absolutely no information about what he looked like. If there is no contemporary public domain image of the person, then WP:NFCC#1 and WP:NFCC#8 tell us that the article would work equally well with no image at all. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:43, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unused personal file designed more for uploaders website, FB and Twitter accounts. Was used for a an AfC draft but that was turned down. No other edits made by uploader. Unsuitable for Commons because it doesn't have much educational use. Green Giant (talk) 18:03, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:NFCC#8. Stefan2 (talk) 19:36, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • At User talk:Russavia#Message for Stefan2, User:Russavia suggests that this image should be replaced by another image. The user also suggests that another image in the article Mark Donaldson violates WP:NFCC and should be replaced by another free image. I agree with Russavia about this, but I do not know if replacing images in the article or nominating the other one for deletion would be considered as proxy editing on behalf of a blocked user. Opinions? --Stefan2 (talk) 21:39, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (as uploader) I disagree with Russavia's view that the use of this image was never compliant with the fair use criteria (it depicts the moment the first-ever award of Australia's highest military medal was made). However, as the Governor General's website has subsequently released all its images, including a couple from this ceremony, under Wikipedia-friendly licenses the fair use claim is no longer tenable or sensible and it's time for this to be deleted.
