Reason The United States Census Bureau, a made-up human institution, defines so-called White Americans as "having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa." That's all nice and everything but why are US Census Bureau categories on Wikipedia? The categories and articles on Wikipedia need to reflect the worldwide POV, not just the US/UK one.
Why is this outdated narrow-minded conceptualization of people peddled on Wikipedia of all places? Even the suggestion that there exists a unified "White American culture" is wrong. In Europe, for instance, such black and white labeling does not exist and for instance you are Hungarian or Italian and so on; whiteness is a WASP i.e. White British and White British Americans invention and it needs to be phased out of Wikipedia, or at least marked a way it is clear it is a US- and/or UK-centric issue. (And even in the UK, they do have a separate Middle Eastern label.)
How preposterous it is to even suggest such a pseudo-anthropological category exists? What does the Middle Eastern American culture have to do with WASP culture? How do for instance Jews have anything to do with the Anglo-Saxons (who invented the "white" obsession in the first place) who in 1939 turned away a ship full of Jewish refugees? [1][2]
Absolutely nothing or they, so-called White Americans would accept their White American immigrants-to-be.
Proposal "White American" needs to be renamed a certain way that denotes either
- It is a a US-centric issue. E.g. "Category: White American (US)" or "Category: White American (US Census Bureau)
- Renamed altogether to, say, "European Americans" with a footnote saying US Census Bureau defines the category as "White Americans with origin in Europe, Middle East, yadda yadda etc
- Delete (that is my suggestion, because as it happens there is already a superior categorization system in place that Wikipedia already uses. Take for instance this category: Category:Middle Eastern American
That is how Wikipedia categorizes people in the U.S. and that is the correct, most appropriate one.
Categories and articles on Wikipedia need to reflect a worldwide neutral POV and not just the U.S./British-centric (both countries historically heavily invested in "white" elitism) outdated racially charged concepts that did nothing but damage to Jews, blacks, and other historically oppressed ethnicties in the U.S. like Italians, and Poles.

- Keep – Yes, this article is does not represent worldwide "whiteness". But it isn't supposed to. It is about white Americans.
