• The Florida Firecats have named Clint Dolezel their new Offensive coordinator.
• On January 13, it was announced that the Peoria Pirates had reached a new agreement in which the team would be heard on WWCT FM 99.9 "The Buzz," which is part of the Independence Media Holdings.
• Mike Polisky, President and General manager of the Chicago Rush and the AFL's 2008 Executive of the Year, has been named the new President of the Chicago Wolves AHL franchise.
• On January 23, Kentucky Horsemen Kicker Doug Daniel presented the "Kentucky Horsemen Financial Literacy Program" sponsored by Central Bank to students at Leestown Middle School.
• The Mahoning Valley Thunder have formed the "Thunder Foundation." The foundation will attempt to help build better communities in the Mahoning Valley, through "collaborative activities that promote and encourage education, physical activity, high moral conduct and development of positive life skills."
• Jon Bon Jovi and Craig Spencer, co-owners of the Philadelphia Soul have been sued by the team's now former Sales Manager Joseph Krause of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.

• The Florida Firecats of af2 have announced that a group of local investors have purchased a minority share of the franchise. The group includes; Robert Germain Jr., Dr. John and Elizabeth Kagan, Berk Edwards, Richard Castiano, Joseph Viacava Sr., Joseph Viacava Jr. and former Firecats Quarterback Michael McQuagge.
• Arena Football League players made up of some of the 19 players at a Dallas Cowboys workout on January 28. • The 2000 Quad City Steamwheelers have been named the af2's all-time greatest team, by a group of af2 head coaches past and present, members of the media and fans throughout the country.
• In February, AFL owners met in Chicago, Illionis along with iterm Comminsioner Ed Policy to begin working out details of a new operating model.
• On February 11, it was mentioned by Blogcritics magazine sports blogger Matthew T. Sussman that a relegation system might help, and possibly save, the Arena Football League.
• Rich Ingold has been named the all-time greatest head coach in af2 history, by a group of af2 head coaches past and present, members of the media and fans throughout the country.
• af2 teams opened training camp on February 28 in preperation for the league's 10th anniversary season.

• On March 26, 2009 an importance scale was added to the project's banner. The scale can be found here. It would be greatly appreciated if you went through and tagged AFL and af2 players with on the importance scale. Also, the option of |attention= (Yes or No) has been added. Newsletter news

• As you may have noticed, there is a slightly modified look to the newsletter. I felt this would be helpful for those issues with alot of news headlines, etc. So I thought I'd tell you alittle bit about it. The top section is the "Table of Contents," as the name states. The ONLY time anything else is to be included is when there is a BIG headline, such as the League's possible return in 2010, as above. Those headlines get their own special subsection in the Current events section. That is how things will be organized, also in the order they happen. Hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions or comments pleae feel free to leave them here.

• Jim Foster, the creator of arena football, purchased minority-ownership of the Peoria Pirates and became the team's new General manager.
• The Arena Football League extended health insurance to it's players, a sign that the league is preparing for a return in 2010.
• AFL Quarterback Matt D'Orazio signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League on February 13.
• The af2 once again partnered up with Network Foundation Technologies (NFT) to broadcast "af2TV" a FREE-for-View online network that will showcase every game of the league's 10th anniversary season live over the Internet. The broadcasts began on Thursday March 12's exhibition game when the Milwaukee Iron played the New Zealand Overstayers.

• Philadelphia Soul team president Ron Jaworski believes there is a 99.9% chance the Arena Football League is returning for the 2010 season.

AFL to return in 2010?

• On March 23, it was announced that the AFL plans to return to play in 2010 after the league and the players union reached an agreement to amend the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Storm owner has heart surgery

• In late March, Tampa Bay Storm minority owner Peter "Woody" Kern, had surgery for an aortic aneurysm. He was listed in critical condition at Memorial Herman Heart & Vascular Institute at the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

New Policy

• On April 5, Ed Policy stepped down as acting AFL commissioner. Policy said that the league's restructuring will require a CEO, "a job in which Policy has no interest."

The Wheelers' aren't fans of HoJos.

• On April 13, the Quad City Steamwheelers experienced a slight problem on "Victory Monday" when the "name" had to be changed to "Moving Monday" after the Howard Johnson's the team was staying at shut down for good and forced guests to leave.

No more football in L.A.

• On April 19, Casey Wasserman, ceased operations of the Los Angeles Avengers, saying on the teams website; "The LA Avengers has terminated its participation in the Arena Football League...."

AFL returning in 2010.

• On April 23, the Arena Football League announced that they had finalized a new business model that will enable the league to return in time for the 2010 season.

• On April 7, OS Rodney Wright signed with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League.
• On April 22, Boise Burn Center Kyle DeVan signed a two-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. DeVan, spent the last nine weeks of the 2008 NFL season on the New York Jets practice squad.

• On May 1, 2009, former Nashville Kats Head coach Pat Sperduto was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as a scout.

• In early May, the AFL met with owners on a new business model for the league.

New Captain on the Pirate Ship

• No, it's not Jack Sparrow. On May 14, Mike Hohensee was named the new head coach of the Peoria Pirates.

AFL's Moten and Gonzalez on reality show

• The Spike reality show 4th and Long, hosted by Hall of Fame Wide receiver Michael Irvin, is a competition show that gives football players, possibly, their last shot at the NFL. The winner receives a shot at making the roster of the Dallas Cowboys. The show premiered on May 18 and two of the contestants are familiar names to arena football fans one being Philadelphia Soul DB Eddie Moten and Soul WR/DB Steve "Speedy" Gonzalez. Gonzalez is currently a member of the Central Valley Coyotes.

Pittsburgh Swanns?

• Hall of Fame receiver Lynn Swann was announced as a potiential co-owner of the new Pittsburgh AFL franchise.

Walking wounded

• In a suprise move, the AFL has notified players that the league will be discontinuing their health insurance.

Judge Pun-tastic

• In a humorous twist, U.S. District Judge Michael M. Baylson included four Bon Jovi song references and three football terms into the opening paragraphs of his 29-page opinion on AFL Philadelphia v. Krause, the lawsuit filed by former Sales manager Joseph Krause Jr.

Firecats tuck tail and run?

• The Florida Firecats, whos lease with Germain Arena expires at the end of this season, may relocate. According to Firecats Chairman and principal owner Andrew Vallozzi, the team has received offers for a place to play in 2010 from several "major markets" .

No more monopoly?

• On June 9, a Northern California judge allowed a class-action lawsuit against video game giant EA Sports to contiue. The suit claims that EA Sports "has and continues to engage in 'blatantly anticompetitive conduct' since 2004". And as the judge said in his ruling, "'As the court understands these allegations, interactive football software will not sell if it does not use the names, logos and other markers of teams that actually compete in the NFL. There is, in effect, no market for interactive football software in a virtual or fictitious setting. If true--as the court must at this point accept--this adequately alleges that there are no substitutes for interactive football software without the markers of actual teams and players.'"

AFL players selected by UFL

• On June 19, the United Football League held its inaugural draft and three AFL players were selected. Those players being; Steve Sanders by UFL New York, and Larry Brackins and Brett Dietz by UFL San Francisco.

ArenaBlackjack?

• No, it's not an new indoor sports version of the popular card game, sorry. However, on June 24, it was announced that the 2009 ArenaCup X would be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Orleans Arena, the former home of the Las Vegas (now Cleveland Gladiators). It's the fourth time in the last five seasons that the af2 has held a neutral-site ArenaCup.

Break in the Fever?

• On June 25, Doug MacGregor, who has owned the team since 2007 and challenged by a shrinking fan base and revenue, stated he's considering folding the Tri-Cities Fever if he cannot find some local investors by the end of the summer. The Fever are the only team in af2 with a sole owner, though he has stakes in five other af2 teams, Corpus Christi Sharks, Tennessee Valley Vipers, Amarillo Dusters, Peoria Pirates and the Boise Burn, each of which also has a local owner or ownership group.

• On July 2, the San Jose Mercury News reported that the San Jose SaberCats might fold.

Firebirds in Trouble?

• On July 8, it was reported that the Albany Firebirds' future appears to be uncertain, due to less than stellar attendance.

af2 Hall of Fame

• On July 17, it was announced that the af2 would induct the inagural class of the af2 Hall of Fame. The class will consist of 10 inductees, from five categories: Players, Coaches, Administrators (owners and front office), Officials and At-large/Contributors to the game. The criteria for player and coach nomination are that they must have played or coached for at least one season. The inaugural class will be announced during the lead-in week of ArenaCup10.
