Unfortunately not. GMT's integrated database (based on the Digital Chart of the World) contains national borders for all countries (although not always NPOV or up to date, as we know now), but subnational borders only for North and South America. While it is possible to use external data to draw additional province/state borders, I don't know if there exists such a data set for India. I've been generally avoiding listing new images, instead trying to focus on clearing the backlog from WP:PUI. If you've got the time, listing them is a simple matter of sticking {{PUI}} on the image, warning the uploader with {{subst:idw-pui}}, and then listing the files at the bottom of WP:PUI. I would like to upload to the Commons some photos I have found on a district site (http://www.ramnad.tn.nic.in/photo1.htm) I think I saw a template saying that those kind of photos coming from .nic sites are ok (PD, GDFL or something). Am I wrong ? If not what is the template ?

There is a nice map of the Chennai metropolitan area here. As this is from a Govt. of India website, I believe this is PD. This can be improved and placed in the chennai article instead of Image:Madras surroundings.png, the length and breadth of which covers more than 200km, and places well outside of Chennai. - Srini81 11:17, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Madras surroundings.png does give an excellent idea of water bodies and towns near Chennai, but some of the places in the map are waaay too far away from Chennai, some places are more than four hours drive from the city. The map covers the northern part of TN, south AP and i think even Karnataka! may be.. the image can be cropped a bit, so that it fits the article. what do u think? - Srini81 17:42, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did draw the Kashmir borders by hand, that is, mostly by hand: The reference map you suggested (Image:IndiaTest.png) had almost the same projection, so all I had to do was rotate it slightly and overlay it over my map with 50% transparency. So I could outline a "path" (a Gimp term) by following the border click by click. But even for the small Kashmir borders it took about an hour, maybe two. I don't have the exact statistics of the parties elected from Chennai, but I do remember that the 2001 assembly elections saw AIADMK and allies winning about five constituencies and the rest by DMK. Hi! I'm working on Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(subnational_entities)#Proposal, and was going through some countries with large wikipedian populations to see how things are done. I noticed that you'd recently moved Punjab (India) to Punjab, India. May I ask why? It's just that that goes against the typical standard for disambiguating a state from something else; compare with Georgia (U.S. state), Luxembourg (province of Belgium) and Tyrol (state), among others.

Would you have any major objection if I moved it to, say, Punjab (state)? (since part of Punjab IS in India, saying (India) doesn't help disambiguate it, but saying (state) explains perfectly what it is). Or if you don't think that divides it enough from the Pakistani province, maybe Punjab (Indian state)?

(Since the Pakistani province is at Punjab (Pakistan), maybe I should look into moving that to Punjab (province) or Punjab (Pakistani province).)

Thank you for your response. I don't totally agree that state = province, but you do have a point - both are the first-level divisions of their countries, so disambiguating by country is useful too. (Put another way - "Georgia (U.S. state)" is where the U.S. state is, right? Imagine if it were "Georgia (state)", and the other one were "Georgia (country)". Synonyms! Hence why context is useful). I would greatly appreciate if you look into the mess created in the article Rohingya. This is quite an interesting issue; a few months ago, I removed the copyvio and then organized the article into sections and cleaned up the links. For some reason, several anon editors in the block 212.138.47.* seem to take offence at my "touching" "their" article, and started vandalizing my user/talk pages. Some of these vandals were blocked by other admins.

Last week, these vandals created several sockpuppet accounts, including Antirajib (talk · contribs). You can see from the account name what its purpose was. The user vandalized my user/talk pages besides leaving abusive comments. The user was blocked immediately.

Yesterday and today, there has been a parade of sockpuppets all directed at either launching personal attacks, or avoiding 3RR. You can find several incoherent rants in Talk:Rohingya, my talk (User talk:Ragib and Mel's talk User talk:Mel Etitis. The language constructs and the irrational attitude ("how-dare-I-touch-their-article-being-a-Bengali" etc) points out a single user behind all these.

I find the following accounts as sockpuppets of the same vandal from the ip block 212.138.47.*

• Yonglee (talk · contribs)
• Bobjack (talk · contribs)
• Antirajib (talk · contribs)

I urge everyone to take a look at the page history, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rohingya&curid=1918632&action=history . This is not even a dispute over content! I have not added or deleted any content other than the initial copyvio. I simply organized the article with sections, and cleaned up the external links. One of the links point to a blog, which the vandals ferociously object to as being termed a blog. I've gotten literally tired of the abuse these vandals launched on me. The level of racial and personal abuse is quite hard to take. Since it would be a conflict of interest in my part to take actions against these vandals, I would request you to look into this issue and decide.

Reg. his importance, he first computed India's per capita income (the source for per capita image in the col.section uses his data to compute an aggregate), first to put criticism of british policies in an economic perspective, which was mostly political in nature. Thanks, It has to do with Kashmir. The status is disputed between India, Pak and China and its area is large enough to be noticible even in the thumbnails. The map assumes that there is no dispute. I would prefer the area be hashed marked. There are three regions:

1. Region 1 is administered by Pakistan: It should be marked by green and orange hashes.
2. Region 2 is administered by China: draw same as above.
3. Region 3 is administered by China: Should be marked by orange and the Chinese colour
4. Region 4 is a disputed region in India's far eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. That too should be hashed marked with India and China colours.

Well, your propose would be politically correct, but marking these areas hashed isn't that easy. In this map, a country is marked by two colours only if two religions have approximately the same number of adherents. That means that there must be at least 40% Hindus in Kashmir to justify orange hashes. This leads to another problem: We decided not to mark regions separately from their country as we might have done with Tibet, Northern Iraq etc. So we'd have to decide either whether Kashmir belongs to India or to Pakistan or maybe none of these, or we regard #Region 1 as part of Pakistan, #Region 2 as part of India and #Region 3 as part of China.
