Category renamed

I think that "Flags of the Confederate States of America" is a better name for the category. The official name was the Confederate States of America. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 22:47, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the input, Bubba73! That change to "Category:Flags of the Confederate States" was made for reasons I mentioned in "Edit Summary" at the time I renamed the Wikimedia Commons category. That "Edit Summary," however, was perhaps not as detailed as it should have been to properly explain the reasoning behind the category name change, so let me try to provide you a bit more detail here:
  • Firstly... the legal name of the national flag as first established by the Confederate States Flag Act of (May 1,) 1863 was "Flag of the Confederate States." For your convenience, here's a link to the Flag Act: An Act to establish the Flag of the Confederate States. Please note "of America" was never a part of naming convention used by the C.S. Congress in the law first establishing the Confederate flag. I say "first," because the Flag of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1863 (i.e. "Stars and Bars") was never codified into public law (the '61 "Stars and Bars" flag was used as a national flag de facto, not de jure).
  • Secondly... Renaming "Category:Flags of the Confederate States" also had the additional benefit of matching its U.S. counterpart (i.e. "Category:Flags of the United States). Please note "of America" is not used. I hope this explanation helps to clear things up as to why the Wikimedia Commons category change was made, Bubba73. Again, thanks for the input! -- Lieutcoluseng (talk) 01:36, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
OK, I didn't know about the Confederate States Flag Act, so let it stand. (I think I've seen both "US" and "USA" insignias, but only "CSA" insignias, not "CS".) Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 01:39, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! As an editor, might you consider renaming main Wikipedia article for same reason (dropping words "of America"). I tried, but takes an editor. -- Lieutcoluseng (talk) 02:05, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Well, the Confederate States Constitution officially is for the C.S.A., so I don't want to change it. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 02:12, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
The Wikipedia article I meant was Flags of the Confederate States of America, not the primary C.S.A. article. Sorry for the misunderstanding. -- Lieutcoluseng (talk) 02:32, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
I still prefer Confederate States of America because it is what existed 1861-65. "Confederate states" could refer to the states that were in the C.S.A. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 00:36, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
For instance, "Confederate states" could refer to Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 05:53, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Researching Individuals in Nazi Germany.

I am researching one Franz Weiss. He was in the German military during WWI and in the Berlin police after. Do you know of any ways to research individuals from that period online?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.28.64.39 (talk) 17:18, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Personally... I do not. There are German language family history websites you might try; but most require a subscription. You could also try contacting the two Austrian art schools where Franz Weiss taught painting for many years. They may have old faculty biographies on file. Since you, presumably, are not from a German speaking country; you should know that most academics in Austria have basic English language skills. If you contact one of these art institutes during the course of your research, please be aware that German speaking people typically do not use the term "Nazi" as the English speaking world does. The term "National Socialist" is mostly used. Also please be aware that both the word, and time period, are highly sensitive subjects within the German speaking world. With this in mind, you would be better off phrasing your research question with something like: "I am researching art Lecturer Franz Weiss and would like to know if you have any information about his time in military service between 1940 and 1945 available to the public." Phrasing your question this way will go over better throughout the German speaking world. Viel Glück (English: Good luck), Lieutcoluseng (talk) 14:17, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Province of North Carolina Article source

Hey, sorry to bother you but from the source you cited in your edit on the Province of North Carolina article, I couldn't see anywhere on the book page where it said that North and South Carolina split in 1712. Riverblade (talk) 21:01, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

No bother at all, Riverblade. It's been a while since I edited that page so give me a few days to remember exactly what I did with regard to the citation. Flags in Infoboxes

Please note WP:INFOBOXFLAG and stop adding back US flags into Infoboxes as you did here: [1] as such flags are merely decorative and do not "convey information in addition to the text". Mztourist (talk) 09:45, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

My apologies for not getting back to you on this sooner, Mztouris; but I seem to have archived your comment by mistake. I am grateful you took time out of your day to recognize the effort I put into updating that page prior to critiquing my use of a U.S. flag icon. It is always nice to see experienced master editors such as yourself "coach" less experienced editors, rather than merely scold. So, thank you for that.
Regarding your question as to my repeated use of U.S. flag icons, I have been following the example set forth on the Wikipedia "Template:Infobox military person" page: [2]. But being as how you are so much more experienced than me, I presumed you already knew that. Have a great day, Mztouris. And thanks again for the expert feedback on my edit. Hi @Lieutcoluseng, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're doing, it seems like you've done a copy-and-paste move of Battle of Collierville to Second Battle of Collierville. Can you undo that and go through the process at WP:RM (it should be an uncontroversial technical request) so that the article history stays with the content? Alyo (chat·edits) 17:56, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Alyo. I was going to do exactly that, but in the meantime it was reverted by someone and I really don't feel like going back and redoing all of the hard work I put into it.Lieutcoluseng (talk) 04:04, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Well, yes, they did that because WP:CUTPASTE moves are explicitly disallowed. I'm sorry that you lost your work, but unfortunately that was the only option. If it helps, submitting a move request only takes ten seconds :) Alyo (chat·edits) 04:15, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
That said @Alyo; it's a pity that Onel5969, who hastily reverted my work, didn't afford me the same level of respect you did by assuming good faith and sending an inquiry to my talk page first. All for naught, I suppose. Lieutcoluseng (talk) 05:17, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
To be fair, Onel is one of the most prolific New Page Patrollers on WP and has to work very quickly so as to not let the backlog get into the thoudands -- there's always AGF to go both ways, right? I also see plenty of cut-and-paste moves, and if I hadn't happened to see that you're an experienced editor I would also have just reverted the move and gone on with my day. Hopefully this doesn't dampen your mood too much though--take care! Alyo (chat·edits) 13:36, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Helena image

That ABPP/CWSAC map had been removed as a result of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Battle of Helena/archive1 - there should probably be a consensus or a discussion before adding it back. I've had the use of those maps questioned at featured article candidacy and A-class review before, because they often don't have a functional source link because the NPS apparently deleted them from the internet, the yellow boxes often include peripheral activity so it isn't really a map of battlefield activity, and because they use modern USGS topographic maps as the underlay the geographic features often aren't really relevant to the battle. Helena is suppose to be the featured article of the day for July 4th with the battle's anniversary and Independence Day, so I want to make sure that it's all OK with the FA standards. I don't feel strongly either way about it because there's a nice map of the battle lines later in the article, but just wanted to let you know that the map had been excluded because it had been challenged. edit summaries

Hello Lieutcoluseng, you have recently summarized some of your edits as adding or removing wikilinks, when in fact those edits have not done neither. Please take more care to summarize your edits correctly, and perhaps avoid reusing past edit summaries? Regards CapnZapp (talk) 18:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
