Fair use rationale for Image:Quebec Congress Badge.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Quebec Congress Badge.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. PxMa 01:07, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you prodded this article. I would feel better if it was discussed at AfD. I'm leaning towards giving him the boot, but I have heard of this fellow in various heraldic contexts outside of Wikipedia. What say you?--Eva bd 20:18, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you feel that AfD is more appropriate, I have no objections to your replacing my prod. Precious Roy 20:30, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bubblenetting Photo

Hi Eva,

If you think the edits I did improved the pic I'm happy enough to download the 'big one' and work on that, and I'll drop the filesize myself before reuploading (I'm unfortunately only on dial-up, so downloading 12MB takes over half-an-hour, which was my grumble).

If you think you can get a better scan, then I'll wait for that. If you think the edits are spoiling it then I'll leave it alone ;).

Having thought a bit more about it, I would be willing to nominate on FPC for you, or support if you do the nomination. Sounds like Enuja would also support. Not sure it would get through, but I think it's worth giving a shot.

--jjron 03:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've downloaded your second (smaller) version. I'll see what I can do, and leave you a note when I reupload. BTW, do you want me to nominate at FPC, or do want to do it? (I don't mind, but because I'm a regular voter I tend to get a few 'payback' opposes from the odd user on my pictures. That may not be the case here though, since I'm not the actual creator.) --jjron 08:33, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded my edit here. It was actually a lot dirtier than I realised, having only looked at the smaller sized versions I hadn't seen all that. I ended up doing a lot cleaning up, and did a substantial noise reduction on it as well.
A shame it wasn't a digital original; with my own scans I find they lose some vibrancy and quality, even when scanned off the negative; presumably a really good scanner may overcome that. I tried to make it a bit more vibrant, but was restricted by the dirt and noise, and the bright whites in the water and on the seagull. I also cropped a little tighter than in my original edit in order to try to get the seagull nearer the edge to help with framing. I really like the seagull being there, and think maybe you could mention that somewhere; presumably it's trying to scavenge in some way.
Well, hope you think it's come up OK. I still have a pre-noise reduction version as well, but it is pretty noisy, and suspect it may get hammered for that. I'll leave it to you to nominate, as requested. Can I just suggest you take care with how you word the '15 whales' part, as someone will undoubtedly bring up the issue that they can't see 15 whales. Good luck; don't be too disappointed if it doesn't get through, and remember some voters can be rather harsh so don't take it personally. Still it can be interesting to see what people have to say about various photos. --jjron 07:55, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are wrong to remove the Clackson quote, and indeed to have voted to delete the article about him. You will note that in the online reference I have, it was someone else quoting him (the editor of the "Baronage Press"). If you were familiar with the Scottish heraldry scene you would be aware of his notoriety. Wikipedia is an on-line encyclopadia and I would have expected it to have higher regard for on-line sources. Incidentally, I am sorry if I inadvertantly removed some other part of your edit. It was unintentional. Ednan 23:43, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, have you heard of Anthony Maxwell? He is another "celebrity" of the Scottish heraldry scene who I feel deserves mention on Wikipedia. However, dare I, in the current climate? Ednan 23:58, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re Replies If it really were about consenus, I might agree with you, but whether or not an article is deleted seems to depend more on the personal opinion of the closing admin. The number of deletes vs. keeps were pretty close, and notably the keeps mostly came with grounds for that opinion while many of the deletes were posted with little or no explanation. The article had no chance for improvement, it was simply wiped away. This is the "climate" I am talking about. Much as I would like to contribute an article about Anthony Maxwell, I reckon I would just be wasting my time doing so. Ednan 13:31, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, what would you regard as "notable". Aren't contemporary heraldry figures notable? Ednan 13:34, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This old (1940) film happened to be on TV this afternoon and, with nothing better to do, I watched it. It's largely set in Philadelphia. A couple of times the heroine's elderly father mentions that he used to teach cricket, which caught my interest. I don't suppose that there can be many American films that mention the game. London Gazette etc

Hi Eva, I'm basically working my way through this list of articles to fix the references - so I should be at Guy Sainty fairly shortly, Tony DeSantis will take a little longer. As you've probably seen the basic idea is to find the parameter values needed to fill out {{LondonGazette}}, most importantly, issue number, start page, date of publication of the (original) issue, if it's a supplement, and the date you checked the reference.

The easiest way to proceed is usually to find the issue number in the old url, for example in the first reference on the DeSantis page you will see in the old url, &issueNumber=48456. As you might guess, 48456 is the issue number. Copy this to the clipboard on your computer. Next, go to http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London&sb=issue which allows you to search by issue on the Gazettes, paste the issue number into the appropriate field, and type the surname of the person you're interested into one of the fields in the "Words" section lower down the search page (for this type of search it shouldn't really matter which one you use). Hit search, and it should come back with one or more results (with the two names you've asked about in particular, I wouldn't imagine you'll get more than one). You can actually get all the parameters needed from the search results page usually, but it's worth actually looking at the the Gazette itself, to double-check you've found what you were looking for, for DeSantis, the first one is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.aspx?pdf=48456&geotype=London&gpn=17523&type=ArchivedIssuePage&all=DeSantis&exact=&atleast=&similar=. You then need to check for the page number in the url (and printed on the page), not where it says in the navigation "Page 3 of 108" (or whatever), so in this case, 17523 (numbering starts again each year, but otherwise generally runs on from one issue to the next). You'll usually want to enter this as the startpage parameter in the template, but in this particular case, it's not immediately obvious from this page that this does actually refer to the Order of St John, so if we use the navigation to step back a page [1], we see the beginning of the notice, so it might be better to enter 17522 for startpage, and 17523 as endpage. Finally you'll need the date - just copy this from the navigation section of the page and enter it as the date parameter - you can link it as normal so that users' date preference work. Finally, it's good practice to enter the accessdate parameter, which needs to be done as yyyy-mm-dd (or there are separate parameters to enter, day month and year separately if you prefer.

The last coupl eof things you need to check are the "type" parameter of the Gazette url, if you see "&type=ArchivedIssuePage" as the examples I've given here, you don't need to add anything else to the template. However, if it says ArchivedSupplementPage you need to add (e.g.) supp=yes (it doesn't actually matter what you put after the equals sign in fact, so long as there's something), if it jsut says IssuePage, you'll need to enter notarchive=yes (again the precise text after the equals doesn't matter), and if it says SupplementPage, you need to do both. It seems to be issues/supplements within about eh last 4 years which haven't been archived yet.

Lastly, if you could strike through any you update on the list I linked to above, it will save me checking the page myself. Hope this makes sense - if you work throug it a step at a time, you'll soon get used to it. I'll add both pages to my watchlist, and check the results if you want to have a go yourself. David Underdown (talk) 21:12, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've done Sainty now, if you look at the diff it may also help you to understand the process. David Underdown (talk) 10:56, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Magic Bicycle 2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Magic Bicycle 2.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Anthony DeSantis.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Anthony DeSantis.jpg.

Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Orders, decorations, and medals of Canada

How can the Canadian Priory have a completely different structure than other priories, such as the USA?

If you take a look at Venerable_Order_of_Saint_John#The_Order_in_the_United_Kingdom, you will see the order have 6 grades. With the exception of Esq that is not used in Canada, Queen Elizabeth II can appoint anyone(citizen or PR of Canada) to any grade of the order.[1] The reason that we don't have Bailiff or Dame Grand Cross is because the Governor General and Lieutenant-governors are only appointed to Knights or Dames of Justice and as the Chancellor of the order, thus no one can be appointed a level beyond what the GG/LGs have even though theoretically it can be done on the advice of the GG. Delhi and Mowbray Heralds Extraordinary...

Hello Evadb—just a note to thank you for improving the pages I created yesterday. Best wishes, talkGiler 09:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on finding the photographs of Peyton and Mohammed Umar Hayat Khan from the 1911 Durbar, Eva. When you have the scan(s) uploaded, I'd be pleased to see one at the biography for Peyton, but no doubt one of them would be even more suitable for the Delhi Herald and Delhi Durbar articles. I might also start a short article for Khan, whose son already has one. Regards, Xn4 19:33, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The images are now uploaded. Not sure where to put Barnes?--Eva bd 00:10, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've now started Malik Umar Hayat Khan. Your pictures at William Peyton and Delhi Durbar are excellent, I've added one to the Khan biography. Xn4 03:58, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On Barnes, I've begun an article for him, too, please see Osmond Barnes. Xn4 16:10, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:James_Moneith_Grant.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:James_Moneith_Grant.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 17:35, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket to do list

I am just getting back into writing, and I was wondering if there is any list of articles needed in the cricket project. I found the list of articles needing attention, but is there a list of new articles that are needed? Thanks, Amwyll Rwden (talk) 22:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Aberforth Dumbledore.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Aberforth Dumbledore.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:09, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archibald Russell move

I'd like to write an article on another Archibald Russell, Sir Archibald Russell of Bristol Aerospace fame. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Order of St John Rank insignia, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Order of St John Rank insignia is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Order of St John Rank insignia, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Help with a specific translation

Hello. I have a passion for heraldry and (let's be honest ^^) my English is not too bad. However, since heraldry language is very specific, it's not sufficient for me to be able to translate from the French heraldic language to the English one. I was wondering if you could help me with one specific blazon :

In french, I think it would be described like that : Mantelé au premier de sable à une croix clêchée vidée pommetée de douze pièces d'or emplie d'azur, au second d'azur à une colombe fondante d'argent tenant en son bec une fleur de lys du même, un étai d'or brochant sur la partition et la croix

Considering you speak nearly fluently "blazonish", I'd say this might be easy for you, right ? :D

Still, I think some precisions are in order : the cross can't be described as a 'Toulouse' one because the inner background is not gules but azure. Also, the or ordinary is a chevronnel, not a simple chevron.

If you accept that request, be thanked ! --Syryatsu (talk) 18:58, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, have a question (about Islay Herald)

I've got a question about the Islay Herald. The article calls it: "Islay Herald of Arms in Ordinary". The Lyon Court website lists the officers and Islay Herald appears like this: "Alastair Campbell of Airds, Islay Herald Extraordinary" [3]. Is there a difference between ordinary and extraordinary? Should the Lyon Court article list the Islay Herald as it appears on the website?--Celtus (talk) 06:41, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I updated the list of officers of arms in the Lyon Court article. The thing is the LC website lists an Angus Herald [4]. I can't find any wiki article for this, so i'm not sure what to do. Should it go in the officer of arms list? Is there an order of precedence for these positions? Where do you think Angus herald should be placed on the list if there is?--Celtus (talk) 06:41, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Cowichan Badge.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Cowichan Badge.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Deliverance

Hello Evadb,

I've never used Wikipedia this way, so I apologize if this message is inappropriate or incorrectly sent. My Mom just passed away on Saturday, January 31st, 2009, and I am trying to source music from Deliverance's album "To God be the Glory" for her funeral. I am wondering if there is a chance you have the album digitally, or even just the song "My Tribute?" If not, thank you anyhow, I know this is a big thing to ask and you may not even get this message for a long time if at all, but I felt I should try. Thank you.

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Evadb! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 6 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

The article Charles Burnett (officer of arms) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced BLP since January 2008. I can't find significant coverage of this person at reliable independent sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 16:25, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Everard Green Ex Libris.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Everard Green Ex Libris.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:55, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eva, I noticed that you have some expertise on both Bart King and heraldic devices—so I wondered if you might know anything about a question I've had for a little while. I've been interested in getting a baggy cap done up in honor of Mr. King, and therefore presumably with the colors and insignia of his Philadelphia Cricket Club. But I haven't been able to find any documentation of what those might have been at the time. Have you got any insight into this question? Cruxdestruct (talk) 18:58, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page appearance: Bart King

This is a note to let the main editors of Bart King know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on October 19, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 19, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Bart King

Bart King (1873–1965) was an American cricketer, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. King was one of the Philadelphian cricketers that played from the end of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War I. This period of cricket in the United States was dominated by "gentlemen cricketers"—men of independent wealth who did not need to work. King was an amateur from a middle-class family, who could devote time to cricket thanks to a job set up by his teammates. King was a skilled batsman, but proved his worth as a bowler. During his career, he set numerous records in North America and led the first-class bowling averages in England in 1908. He successfully competed against the best cricketers from England and Australia. King was the dominant bowler on his team when it toured England in 1897, 1903, and 1908. He dismissed batsmen with his unique delivery, which he called the "angler," and helped develop the art of swing bowling. Many of the great bowlers of today still use the strategies and techniques that he developed. Sir Pelham Warner described Bart King as one of the finest bowlers of all time, and Donald Bradman called him "America's greatest cricketing son." (Full article...)

Dear Georgia while I often use Wikpedia I rarely look at my own entry but see under Talk several questions and comments by you from some years ago which I can address (without making any changes to my own entry!). I read you note the coronet on my arms - this is the coronet of an untitled noble of the Two Sicilies and was granted by the College of Arms when Swan was Garter - I do not have a scan of the grant but I do have a scan of the painted tree, signed by Swan, with the arms with the coronet. This was granted to me because of the award of the Order of Saint Januarius and Justice in the Constantinian Order (as by a decree of 1804 all those who received the cross of Justice were automatically enrolled into the Two Sicilies nobility with a right to be inscribed into the Libro d'Oro of the nobility of the kingdom (which, of course, does not exist anymore). I have also been informed that this was actually used as a precedent for the coronet granted in 2016 to the father-in-law of the Countess of Arundel, who was also granted a coronet, but in his case that of a Papal count. In neither case is this "recognition" of either the title or nobility, because that is beyond the legal capacity of the College of Arms. I can send you an image of the painting of the arms, if you are interested. Also, I have read the "Talk" pages on the Wikipedia pages on Mr Anthony Bailey and noted the comments on the Constantinian Order. I have made some changes to the Wikipedia entry ont eh Order to reflect two recent decrees of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs that recognise a particular status to the "Hispano-Neapolitan" Constantinian Order and the Order of San Gennaro (St Januarius).

As for my own entry, I was awarded the rank of Encomienda (Commander) of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic, in the last honours list of HM King Juan Carlos I before his abdication, and have received unrestricted permission to wear this decoration. The award has not been published, as there is not a published honours list in Spain, but I can send a copy of the diploma and the email from the FCO confirming my permission to wear it.

yours sincerely

A barnstar for you!

The Photographer's Barnstar
Dear Evadb

In 2007 you uploaded a photograph(?) of the Stowe Armorial of 719 quarters within an elaborate trompe d'oeil 'gilt' frame. The quality of the picture is so good that it has enabled me not only to blazon all the quarters but to identify the armigerous families concerned and to reconstruct the genealogy underlying the armorial.

However, the description of the Armorial on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Stowe_Armorial.jpg is actually that of a ceiling panel armorial of 726 quarters in the Manuscript/Gothic Library at Stowe, which is an entirely different object. So the description needs editing.

The Armorial of 719 quarters appears to have been limned by the same hand as the Gothic Library ceiling panel but internal evidence suggests it was painted earlier, as the ceiling panel omits some redundant or spurious quarters included in the Armorial.

Other users have referred to the Armorial of 719 quarters as a diptych, though it appears to be but a single panel.

And nobody seems to know where this Armorial is. Do you know? if not, do you have any leads? Please add a few words.

Do you have any attribution to the original photograph or any source? Please supply it if you do.

Notice

The article Chicago Tornadoes has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG. Can find no in-depth coverage of this now defunct cricket team; sources in the article are WP:ROUTINE.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
