Help with Ricardo Karam page

I don't really understand the process. Is putting it on the main space/page different than submitting it for review? 212.101.252.7 (talk) 07:13, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Oh yes - new articles can be created without anyone's help - or you can use the AFC process (what you are doing) - or you can ask someone to help (me?). Once published then nice looking articles can be placed on the front page. Victuallers (talk) 13:39, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for participating in Women in architecture

Thank you!

Thank you for adding the church to Dorothy Hughes' bio. I couldn't find a picture of it OR the nightclub that I was sure was free use. There are some great images of the nightclub (red George Jetson-house looking thing) on the web, but I couldn't figure out if any of them were free to use. Since it has now been demolished, it is a shame that there is no photograph people can access. I really enjoy doing the architects and finding pictures of their works :) SusunW (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2015 (UTC) I did see the wonderful cantilevered Jetson design @SusunW:. I thought it had reopened in 2014?? It is possible to find pictures on Flickr and beg the users to change the license but it can be quite a faff as they frequently have to be persuaded that wiki allows commercial use. Can it be stopped?

I nominated a hook from Arba'een Pilgrimage which found its way to the Queue 6. I had nominated it with a picture while it is not accompanied with the pic there in the Queue. I asked to understand why and they told that the pic had not been suitable for this purpose. Is there anyway to stop the process so that I can find a suitable picture for it? Thanks. Mhhossein (talk) 11:03, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Sadly no, your picture enters a "beauty contest" with other hooks and pictures and the person who put them together chooses the one they like. You can be the chooser, but obviously not if it includes one of your pictures. Best is to enter again and see if you are chosen next time. Victuallers (talk) 11:30, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Artwork from Nzinga Mbandi Queen of Ndongo and Matamba

Dear Mr B

I'm very glad you like the artwork from the book Nzinga Mbandi Queen of Ndongo and Matamba

I was wondering if it was possible on Wikisource or elsewhere to create new language versions of the books, I started a discussion here

It would be very cool to get it translated into other languages, currently it is available from UNESCO in English, French and Portuguese. Perhaps other languages from Angola and surrounding countries would be really nice. I would like to set up the process so that UNESCO can release artwork from other publications.

If you have an idea how to do this I'm all ears.

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Inter-language link

Which of these is better?

who resided at Schloss Burgberg near Heidenheim
who resided at Schloss Burgberg [de] near Heidenheim

It seems to me that with the latter, the first attempt to click takes you to an empty page, and the second clicks through to German anyway. No issue has been solved, and the text looks worse for readers who aren't interested in the link. Can you explain why the latter might be preferred? Maproom (talk) 14:33, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

1. click on the "de"... 2. I write translations and on the second one I can see there is a job to do. 3. If you don't read German/Japanese etc then its annoying to be offered stuff. 4. ..... I see your point of view.... but were you aware what the template does? Victuallers (talk) 17:22, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Page stalker weighing in. The first one is misleading for the reader. Makes one think they are going to a link on an article so that they can learn more about the topic. Unless they speak German, going there is completely worthless (and some would be aggravated by it). The 2nd one clearly shows there is no version in English, but IF they speak German, they can read an article. And finally...as Victualler's said, it tells those of us who do translations that an article is needed. SusunW (talk) 17:29, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Ok, points taken. I shall stop adding direct links to foreign articles. I can't read German, but I never feel aggravated whan a link takes me to a German article. My browser translates it into a more-or-less comprehensible language resembling English; and sometimes (as in this case) I get to see good pictures, or a map showing where the thing is. What does that mean? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:03, 3 December 2015 (UTC) Oh sorry Gerda. It stands rather rudely for "can't be arsed" or "I'm not bothered". I'm losing patience with the DYK project where we/they spend more time listing and discussing problems rather than fixing them. One recent article was worked on for weeks by a newbie and then it was chewed up because the tense was wrong in someone's opinion. I am unwilling to add to the accusations. I have therefore decided to run down my interests. I maybe over-abbreviated my reasons as "cba". Victuallers (talk) 09:33, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Victuallers, I reverted your rejection of this approved nomination with the puzzling "cba" edit summary before I noticed that you were the original nominator. If you want to withdraw the nomination that's fine, but better you withdraw and let someone else close it. (Of course, it might get promoted before that happens, in which case I can pull it for you.) Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:39, 3 December 2015 (UTC) @BlueMoonset: cba means "Can't be bothered". If you want to re-establish this in your name then by all means. It wasn't ticked and now you say its approved.... I have seen you argue that if it isnt ticked then it isnt approved. I have diminishing interest in these nominations. These articles are taking too long to approve and new editors who do manage to keep up their interest are having their work thrown back because the tense is wrong or it was referenced and it was correct... but they should have referenced it from the body and not the title. I'm sure you can rationalise this behaviour and we could find meta:editors to discuss this issue ad nauseum - but I'm not convinced DYK is rational at the moment. Ada Lovelace Day needs an admin

Victuallers, the Queue 1 that was promoted should have been the first of two Ada Lovelace Day (bicentennial edition) sets, but it wasn't. At the moment, all of the Ada Lovelace Day hooks remain in the special occasion area; the Queue 1 hooks need to be moved back into an available prep or two, and the first batch ALD hooks loaded directly into Queue 1. Note that Preps 5 and 6 are reserved for Frank Sinatra, so nothing should be moved there. Since this needs an admin to work directly with Queue 1, most of the usual set builders cannot help. Best of luck. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:01, 8 December 2015 (UTC) OK I'll have a look Victuallers (talk) 23:03, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Article on Sir George Kenning

Dear Victuallers, I'm writing to you as the person who first welcomed me to Wikipedia in 2010 and who was a founder member of Wikiproject Derbyshire.

I'm hoping that your knowledge of Derbyshire reaches back far enough to remember the Kenning motor empire. I am having difficulty getting a draft article on the key figure in the development of that motor empire, Draft:Sir George Kenning, accepted by the Wikipedia reviewers. I have had my submission refused 3 times on the notability criteria. My gut feeling is that someone who has received a knighthood, has an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and had an obituary in The Times qualifies as "notable". From your personal knowledge of Kenning, have you the same gut feeling? If so, please can you offer me some advice on how best to make the article acceptable?

If you don't have any personal knowledge of Kenning, perhaps you could point me at a "model" article for a business magnate like Kenning. I expect that you will have encountered such an article as part of your sterling work on DYK. Davebevis (talk) 08:23, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Dave - someone is being a bit silly I think. ODNB entry means they are notable. I have no knowledge of Ken, but I guess you have ODNB access. I'll look at your draft. Victuallers (talk) 15:51, 13 December 2015 (UTC) Oh, I just did. Why are you using the AFC route? publish and be damned. You are a editor they are just reviewers - I have seen another example of AFC people making sure that the encyclopedia is perfect - by blocking new articles! Tell me if you need help but if your draft has inline citations then just publish. Look at my recent contribs for models Victuallers (talk) 15:55, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
After a week of rejections, your words of encouragement were very welcome!
Yes, I can access the ODNB via my Derbyshire Library Service membership.
I was aware that there was a way in which I could create articles without using AfC, but I have not actually used that route. I had naively regarded AfC as a useful and important quality control mechanism. However, I had not envisaged the notability criteria being applied in such a rigid and unhelpful manner that did not allow any flexibility to take account of country-specific "tests" for notability (eg an entry in ODNB).
What I intend to do next is:
(a) Create a new article with a new name ("George Kenning (1880 - 1956)").
(b) Paste the existing draft article into the new article but minus the reviewer panels.
(c) Save the new article.
(d) Provide a wikilink from the existing draft to the new article.
(e) If you know of a better way, please let me know.
I am aware that the Manual of Style frowns upon the use of bullets and I will try to reduce my use of them.
Davebevis (talk) 10:26, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
That should work well - and its how most of us work. The other think is never copy and paste more than a few factual words. Put everything in your own words and include a ref at least every paragraph and more if you are saying something that may be challenged. Give me a prod when you have it about ready. Victuallers (talk) 12:04, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
I just accepted the article, and reminded those who had rejected it that theONDB itself has always been regarded a proof of notability. The article does need some improvements in format: please write in paragraphs, not bullet points. And we refer to people by their last name within an article: Kenning, not George (except when its ambiguous whether it means him or his father) . I fixed the first section as an example. DGG ( talk ) 17:47, 14 December 2015 (UTC) (I sentthe same message to Davebevis). DGG ( talk ) 18:21, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your (and DGG's) efforts in getting this article published. You have restored my somewhat-battered faith in Wikipedia. Thanks also for the changes you have made to the article itself. I will now set about adding categories and putting wikilinks to the article from other articles that already mention Kenning. Davebevis (talk) 09:34, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Austrian Empire ANI indcident

Dear Victuallers,

please check on incident and the Austrian Empire/Talk page:Hungary and Kingdom of Hungary 1526-1848/Talk page:Austrian Empire 1804-1867 and their content. I seek compromise without altering historical accuracy. We need a person also with scientific background regarding coherent arguing or presenting allegations without controversion, like satisfiable mathematical expression in AI/CS field. I urge your assistance since the validity of my argumentations is enquestioned, although I have a Master Degree of Computer Science and specialized in AI, so I do know what is a flawless inference. This approach is also a very important method to seek cohenerce and represent valid infromation from the sources, regardless what is the certain area. Thank You very much!(KIENGIR (talk) 00:37, 21 December 2015 (UTC))

Dear Victuallers,
thank you for your answer, appreciated very much! For me is everything so clear, but an other editor is debating it. So let me to make it easy for you to judge, I will paste here the corresponding source misinterpreted by the other editor, and judge by logical inference the author's conclusion - apart from sourced or debated historical material - since this is the key in the conflict:
Prequisites:

-variable A = ország (country in Hungarian, referring to Hungary)

-variable B = erblande (hereditary lands in German, referring the lands ruled by the Habsburg dynasty)

- variable C = Kingdom of Hungary

- variable D = Empire of Austria

- variable E = Court

"The Empire was not a unified state but a monarchic union of Lands in which the ország was part of the empire but also separate from it: ország and empire moved on different planes. From the perspective of the Court, since 1723 regnum Hungariae had been a hereditary province on the dynasty's three main branches on both lines. From the perspective of the ország, Hungary was regnum independens, a separate Land as article X of 1790 stipulated. Hungary was connected to the other Lands of the empire largely through the monarch. The Imperial matters - foreign policy, defense and state finance - were handled by the monarch as reservata exercised him as the king of Hungary. In 1804 Emperor Franz assumed the title of Emperor of Austria for all the Erblande of the dynasty and for the other Lands, including Hungary. Thus Hungary formally became part of the Empire of Austria. The Court reassured the diet, however, that the assumption of the monarch's new title did not in any sense affect the laws and the constitution of Hungary. After the discussion the diet concluded that the title change was not something that affected them."

CONFUSION:

EDITOR E1's interpretation:
Hungary became part of the Austrian Empire
EDITOR E2's interpretation:
Hungary legally remained a separate state as before, since the fact the King of Hungary rendered also the title of Emperor of Austria did not change any affiliation between them. Thus Hungary's inclusion to the Austrian Empire is strictly formal by assumption, but not legal, since article X - Hungary is regnum independens, a separate state remained in action.
EDITOR E1 does not want accept EDITOR E2 inference.
Literally: (please note A=C)

S1:D != unified state, but monarchic union of lands

S2:A is part of D & separate from D

S3:E's claim of heredity is simply restricted to the Crown

S4:A's claim is being an independent state, that remains valid after D is created

S5:D's leader assumes inclusion of A & E confirms the assumption did not change any former releation with A

Thus, E1's statement of; D included C || C became the part of D is NOT SATISFIABLE AND LEADS TO CONTROVERSION because S1, S4, S5 is harmed
E2's statement of; C remains indepedent state because of S1 & S4 & S5 so the conclusion os SATISFIABLE, VALID WITHOUT CONTROVERSION
Thus, because of S2 & S5 we may only formally/symbolically agree with E1's claim, but not legally -> TWO SEPARATE ENTITES HAVE A COMMON KING = PERSONAL UNION IS LEGAL.
Please add your inference as an engineer/scientist, are you agree this demonstration is flawless? Thank You(KIENGIR (talk) 02:48, 23 December 2015 (UTC))

Historical context

I was delighted to read your article on Lecesne - I was looking for information on him after coming across a brief reference to his case in a newspaper and I expected it would be a very long, hard slog: but you've made it easy. Thanks.

I know that as Lecesne was born into a propertied class in a slave-based economy, and I believe ran a business, he unavoidably held some slaves himself. (Actually it's because he was compensated under the negotiated settlement of the 1830s that I was looking for information on him). I would like the article to address this, but don't feel historian enough to explain how free people of colour were born into a social and moral minefield. I generally just parachute historical references into existing articles. This would be misleading here I think.RLamb (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

The point about Lecesne receiving compensation was unknown to me and I think it would be a valuable addition. After all he was on the premier anti-slavery society committee!!! I was intrigued by him after discovering his face at the 1840 conference and his association with Stephen Lushington who seems amazing. I later found out that one of my very ancestors (a white guy) worked for him. (Due to that link I have distant cousins with Maori ancestors). So I would like to thank you for seeking me out - he is a very interesting guy who maybe needs a book! Do add some stuff, but I agree that your piece on the position of slave owning people of colour looks like its worth writing but I'm not sure where it fits in the wiki. All the best. Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 12:43, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

The site which details compensation paid to slave-owners on emancipation is [2] The database lists three payments to two people called Lecesne, spelling their names as 'Lewis Lecesne' and 'Lewis Celeste Lecesne'. The first could be a relation, but the second I think must be him? Although, come to that, the payments made to 'Lewis Celeste Lecesne' are not for slaves held in Jamaica but on other islands. Perhaps I should do some more genealogical research before accusing the abolitionist of being a slave-owner?
However, Lushington's parliamentary speech refers to Lecesne having ten slaves and Escoffery four at the time they were unjustly driven out of Jamaica, so clearly in early days LCL didn't see slavery as totally repugnant. His views evolved. I still don't feel I can set this in context. If I simply add the details about slave-ownership and compensation, I make him sound a hypocrite whereas I suspect it may have been a lot more complexRLamb (talk) 01:20, 5 January 2016 (UTC).

Translation from Swedish

Kalmar Glasäpple

Please find below a crude translation as per request 2012. Some linguistic polishing by a native speaker of English might be required, so amend as nessesary.

NB. 1700-talet (year 1700 – 1799) in Swedish corresponds to the 18th century in English, so there is no printing error below.

Kalmar Glasäpple, (meaning glossy apple from Kalmar; an alternate name is Spanish renett) is an apple, the provenience of which has been disputed. Anyhow, this apple species has been grown in Sweden since the 18th century. The blossoming is late. Any apple species florificating at the same time as Kalmar Glasäpple is good for fertilization. The body is light yellow, and the taste is a mix of acidity and sweetness. Harvesting may begin in early October; fully ripe early December. The tenability is 1 – 2 months. Kalmar Glasäpple is suitable for eating as is, as well as for cooking. In Sweden, swedish cultivation zones (i) – (ii) [1] are suitable for gardening.

I Sverige odlas Kalmar glasäpple gynnsammast i zon I-II.

Hi Victuallers, hope you're doing fine.

I just created the article for Alida Hisku, an Albanian singer. Can you have a look at it, and maybe we can come out with a DYK?

Thanks.

You have created an article on Annette Meakin. There is a much more comprehensive article in the sandbox of Samlesmore. Please could you help synthesize the 2 articles.

Ethel Bartlett and Rae Robinson

Hi, I am writing an article on these piano duettists for the Women in Music editathon. There is an article about Bartlett] in the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music (5th edition), but it is subscription-only. I wonder if you have access to this online article and could perhaps copy it and post it on my talk page, or send it to me via email? Thanks for your help, Yoninah (talk) 23:05, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't think I need it after all. I found their listings in a different Oxford dictionary, and they were very short. I just posted the article at Bartlett and Robertson. Yoninah (talk) 01:58, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Muiravonside Country Park

I've added a lot of history from documents, and tried to find the original sources where I can, but a lot to that are held at the Callender house archives, how do I reference things that appear to have no name, such as handwritten interviews, do I need to get the official name of the document from the archives? If you find it interesting feel free to investigate further, it will help with the signage at the park.

I used the draft system to give me time to put in more detail while putting it somewhere it could be found, if you think it's of publishable quality then I'd be happy for it to go 'live' :) James B 17:56, 18 February 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jambamkin (talkcontribs)

Strictly speaking you should not use interviews or primary evidence. Wikipedia calls this "original research" as it includes those who have the "true" info on who killed JFK etc etc. Find secondary sources (not blogs), encylopedias (not wikis) are fine. Thanks for all the help and the move the userspace, impressed that you found the 1977 court case, I was looking for that. It will be good news to give when I meet the ranger at the park, that they now have a Wikipedia page. James B 22:53, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I added the info we talked about to the skpe page (cc: SusunW. Also, would you be keen on getting 2 meetup tabs up for April, or we could reach out to Pharos for assistance as WMNYC has extra hands? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:55, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Refresh my memory, Rosiestep, which topic were we doing for April? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:16, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl: writers for sure. MENA, I think starts at the end of April; not positive. And we have requests from other projects (YoS -- I need to verify if it's social scientists or some other subgroup) and other orgs (WMDC; WMNYC). The sooner we can involve some liaisons in meetup page creation, the better. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:20, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Weird and sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I never got this ping. *sigh* Yes, I am all for two tabs, no idea how to do it for April. Maybe 3, writers, works, MENA? SusunW (talk) 03:27, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Should I break out the writers more like I did for the poets and journalists, Rosiesetp? I can break them down by children's and YA, novelists, etc. Do psychologists fall under social sciences? I'm not sure we have a lot of women listed under social scientists... I can dig up more though. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:03, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Oops! failed ping, Rosiestep, see above. Need coffee.... Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:04, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl:, waiting to hear back from Ryan at YoS as I'm unclear about how many events he'd like us to hold during the remainder of 2016, but adding Keilana to the convo as she might remember. Referring to the social science page, looks like these are the main subdivisions: economics, political science, human geography, demography, sociology, as well as anthropology, archaeology, jurisprudence, psychology, history, and linguistics. Excited to work on social science as that's me at my core! --Rosiestep (talk) 03:12, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Roger, You will recall my note to you a few months ago regarding Frederick William Lock (artist), who was an illustrator of antiquities for Thomas Bateman in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Early this week Wikipedia accepted my first (and only) article: [3] You will find a reference to your Thomas Bateman article in the first section of my Frederick William Lock article under “Early Life as an Artist in England, 1841-1846. Thank you for emphasizing my need to establish that Lock was “notable” to a degree acceptable to Wikipedia.

My motivation in writing that article was to condense much of what I have found about the artist of the painting that my wife Carolyn and I were given as a house-warming gift soon after we bought our first home in Houston, TX in 1961 We named the painting: The Artist's Possessions; it is signed in the upper right: F. W. Lock/Montreal/1848/with a lock symbol -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_William_Lock_(artist)#/media/File:The_Artist%27s_Possessions,_F.W._Lock,_Montreal,_1848.jpg

You will find the draft at this link https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Women_are_everywhere It would be great if you could have a look at it. I need any kind of suggestion or advice to improve it. Support or endorsement would be fantastic. Many thanks,--Kenzia (talk) 09:05, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your support! Grazie--Kenzia (talk) 09:29, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment. As I have already explained to other people I've not been very active on Wikipedia, being very engaged first in my studies and then in my work. I've always been a great user of Wikipedia, and have always been sorry for the gender gap in the women representation. Last year I participated to an Inspire campaign with this idea, and now that I've more time to dedicate to this task I would love to put it in action. If the fact that I've not been very active till now on Wikipedia is a problem, I will not present the project. It would be very kind of you to give me your advise on this point. Thank you.--Kenzia (talk) 10:04, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the initial review. I have addressed the issue raised by you. The final review is pending here Template:Did you know nominations/Elizabeth Caskey. Incidentally, I also reached the DYK landmark of 1500 DYKs on 28th. Thanks--Nvvchar. 02:10, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Clarifications

Hello Victuallers,

Initially, when I noticed that the image I added to the Shirley Frimpong Manso's article was replaced, this was the exact comment I prepared to post on the Wikipedian's talkpage.

"One of the instruments that Wikipedia uses in ensuring that it is not biased for any individual is the concept of WP:CONSENSUS. This is to let you know that I restored the earlier image in the Shirley Frimpong Manso's article because 1. You didn't seek consensus before replacing it. 2. It is of a better quality than the image you added. If you think your image is more appropriate than the previous one I added, kindly create a discussion on the talkpage with your reasons, so we can arrive at a consensus. No Wikipedian (including myself) have the monopoly on any article, so feel free to state your rationale for replacing it."

But on getting here, I discovered it was an more experienced editor that replaced the image, so if it's ok by you, I will really appreciate if you can enlighten me more, if its ok for me to replace an image in an article, even if the previous image has been freely licensed to Wikimedia Commons.

Hi Victuallers! Thank you for all your great edits related to Women in Red's Celebrating Jewish Women edit-a-thon. A colleague of mine is working on part of the Hadassah archival records and noticed that the image on Faye Schenk's page is not of the Zionist leader, who lived from 1909-1981, but of another Faye Schenk, who just died in 2015. Twitter banners

Hi, do you have additional Twitter banners stored somewhere else besides here? --Rosiestep (talk) 04:38, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Rosie, I have a complete set so far and occasionally I make a few but usually I create them before I goto bed. I'd like to see them used elsewhere but at least until wiki mania they will be supplied. I won't be there as I have real life commitments. However I have google alerts for "bamkin" so I hope to see a few mentions. I would offer a ppt slide on the progress of our promise last year if useful. I was thrilled when Keilana/you mentioned me in the US Guardian. Oh yes back to the point, I will load up the banners so far. Do you have an ambition to use them? Victuallers (talk) 12:49, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Roger, Sorry you won't be there. :( WiR is our baby, co-founded by you and me, July 11, 2015; hopefully, we'll get some press this month with all the stuff going on. That said, if you'd like to do a ppt slide or two for my Wikimania presentation, that would be very welcome; please email me off-wiki to coordinate. Re: the banners, yes, I have ambitions to use them for my presentation at next weeks' Wikimedia Diversity Conference. Note, I'll also be presenting at a Round Table at next week's Glam Boot Camp and will show them off at that event to another group. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:49, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Contacting Editors from the Ada Lovelace Editathons

Hi Victuallers,

I hope you don’t mind me contacting you via your talk page. I’m a new Editor to Wikipedia, part of a small research team based at the University of Birmingham in the UK. I’m getting in touch as we’re trying to contact all the Editors who were involved in the Ada Lovelace Editathons in Oxford or London. If you have been, or still are, involved in editing, whatever the scale of your involvement, we would be very grateful for the opportunity to talk to you about your experiences. In the first instance, we’ve set up a short (10 minute) survey, which you can access via my User Talk Pages. If you are interested in helping with our research project, please can you drop me a line?

Thanks, RuthPage (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:41, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi again Victuallers, Thanks for the message you left on my Talk Page - much appreciated. I was really glad to hear about the WiR project and I signed up for it at the weekend. RuthPage (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:01, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi Victuallers,
Would you have time for brief interview about how you set up with WIR project, please? We'd love to know more about this so we can feed it into our project. Wikimedia Diversity Conference

Hi, I have just followed the Wikimedia Diversity Conference in Washington. It was very interesting. If my understanding was right, it is you who are at the very origin of the project "Women in red". What a success! Amazing! Everything is much clearer now. Grazie, --Kenzia (talk) 21:35, 18 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the trouble Kenzia to contact me. Yes it was my original idea and Rosie was one of the first to realise that we had an important opportunity to mitigate the effect of systemic gender bias .. and maybe we can remove, in time, the root cause. I keep meaning to update my talk page. I'm still working away at the project.... and I better get back to it :-) Victuallers (talk) 21:45, 18 June 2016 (UTC)

I'm very sorry Victuallers, but I have to disagree with you: if you really desire to fix a problem, you have first to make an effort to work on the root cause. Quantity without quality is meaningless. Sincerely, --Kenzia (talk) 07:17, 21 June 2016 (UTC) ????? Amazed. The root cause of systemic bias on Wikipedia has nothing to do with quality or quantity. These are just symptoms. I was pleased that my contribution had been noted - but now you are saying "if you really desire to fix a problem" .... oh so working for n years isn't enough to prove that I even "desire to fix a problem"??? I will with effort try to AGF and assume this was hyperbole. How you work out that me saying that we can "remove, in time, the root cause" ... means that I'm not working on it ??? how do you manage that insight? Victuallers (talk) 15:20, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

It seems to me that I have not said that "you are not working on it". Where have I said that "you are not working on it?". The "you" I used in the sentence: if you really desire... has to be meant in a general way: if someone really desires... This is my POV. May I have my personal POV on how to tackle with problems? May I express my opinions? Thank you--Kenzia (talk) 19:01, 21 June 2016 (UTC) Maybe a language problem as when "you" ask me I assume the you is Kenzia.... and if you say that you mean "if someone really desires" ... then I don't know why you said that you disagreed with me. (I'm sure you don't need my permission to have an opinion/POV.) You are free to disagree with me, but I'm confused as to whether you are. Still, I thank you again for your original compliment. Victuallers (talk) 19:20, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I think it is a language problem. For example, I don't understand what it means "I'm confused as to whether you are". It sounds odd, but I assume it is my understanding which is not good enough. In italian, we can use "you" in a general way. Maybe, in english it is not the same. Anyway, I think that in every language one can disagree with someone else on the method, this doesn't imply one assumes that the other person is not working on something. It's not debatable that "Women in red" is a success, and that the numbers are amazing. Thank you for your attention, --Kenzia (talk) 19:38, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

I don't think there's a way to restore pages in bulk like there's a way to delete them in bulk. One by one will have to do.

If someone's blocked, then they're blocked. They don't get to sneak back and pretend to be someone else who didn't misbehave. If they're lying about their identity, what else could they be lying about? Are you going to trust that all their content is actually valid?

"The admins don't really want to ban me, because I'm too valuable! Look at all the content I create with all my sockpuppets! I can do anything I want, and there will be no consequences!"

I don't know what Slowking4 actually did, because I wasn't involved in that. But he did something. If he really wants to continue creating articles — and it's apparent that he does, I completely understand that desire — then why doesn't he use the energy that it takes to fabricate a new identity, and channel it into making amends for what he did wrong in the first place?

Restoring the content which he created as "Beetstraw" or other sock accounts would be... I believe the phrase is "reinforcing an unhealthy ego structure" (although for all I know, that's just psychobabble). You can pick any of the deleted articles and I'll check them to see if they've been substantially edited by other people, and if they have, I'll restore them. And if they haven't, I won't. DS (talk) 23:58, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the reconsideration. As far as I can see s/he has not created any articles with mistakes in them (any more than we all do!). I realise its galling that the articles will be there but it does seem odd that no one remembers what the original problem was. In the past banned users have written GAs and FAs on simple:wiki that have then been bought here. I believe that the Dictionary of National Biography was partially written by an author who was imprisoned in the UK for being criminally insane. His work is still there and was never deleted. Punishing the articles may "feel good" but actually it is counter productive.... Thanks again for your calm reconsideration. Victuallers (talk) 07:28, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Antarctic Women image requests

I've another request of you for image uploads. Any opinions as to whether we can 'fair-use' these:

Thanks, T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 01:52, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Jennie Darlington is still alive, so fair use doesn't work. - I guess the BAS might help? We could get our activists to ask on our behalf? Similarly Janet although she may be contactable direct as she was receiving honours 10 years ago?. Sorry I cant help more. We really need groups like the British Antarctic Survey to change their policy to be open. Victuallers (talk) 12:50, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

I found two pictures on Commons for her, but it looks like the source of those photos is flickr. Is it possible to use the bigger one found here [5] in the same album? I know diddly about photos and their use, unless I am justifying a fair use picture. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 20:19, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Flickr is a good source Susun and in theory these Flickr licenses are fine. However I cannot see why they are fine ie why are they freely licensed? The painting needs to done by a painter who died 50-70 years ago .... unlikely. Of the people who now own it needs to give their permission.... and this Flickr account does not appear to be owned by the paintings owners. I have asked but I suspect we wont be able to. photograph help

I wrote an article about Ljubica Luković. There is a photograph of her on the Serbian WP. It says that it is in the public domain in Serbia. The photograph is well over 100 years old, as the woman died in 1915. Does it have to be uploaded again, or is there some way that the copyright can be extended to English WP? SusunW (talk) 20:39, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Easiest path is to reload the picture as "fair use" to en:wiki. It could be debated that it is probably out of copyright but prob not worth the faff. Thanks Susun. Victuallers (talk) 12:11, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I did that. My rationale was that if those who spoke the language and could research it were not able to ascertain if it was freely distributable, I certainly couldn't. LOL SusunW (talk) 15:51, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Victuallers. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

License tagging for File:UN Women GEM ITU finalist award.png

Thanks for uploading File:UN Women GEM ITU finalist award.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

Sanger

Just a quick note. I see now that in the context of your other edit the addition to the lead of "was first arrested on.." could make sense, so please disregard the tone of my edit summary, which was a response to that lead addition on its own. Added that way, there's no context for her being arrested (such as "she was arrested for her advocacy of birth control") -- it's just "[she was a writer, a nurse]. She was arrested for the first time on.." like she's known for being a criminal. Obviously not what you meant, so sorry for the edit summary. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:12, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

Image for Kiran Manral

I remember you said you were able to take stills from videos. Could you help out with this one?--Ipigott (talk) 11:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ipigott: Technically easy (screenshot and then paste into (say) MS Paint) but the video you chose was copyright. I did look and the only other open license video is this one but it only includes pictures of her work and not her. Sorry can't help more. However when you look at this video see that it says "Reuse allowed" and thats the bit that allows us to use it on wiki. Good work Ian. Victuallers (talk) 12:13, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:10, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Victuallers.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Roger. These changes have already caused me quite a bit of trouble. See my talk page. I don't know if there is anything you can do to prevent experienced editors having their patrol rights withdrawn as mine were. In my case, things have now been sorted out but others may have experienced similar problems and may think they have not been performing sufficiently well. I think it would be a pity if more of those who have been involved in "rescuing" new women biographies are being discouraged from further involvement.--Ipigott (talk) 16:10, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
