On 21 June 2021, it was proposed that this article be moved to Satay sauce. The result of the discussion was no consensus.
Does thai peanut sauce contain "nam phrik pao" (=chili paste in oil)?
I wonder, can anyone tell me? I know there r hundreds of recipes for it, but the recipe talks of chili paste, and doesn't exactly WHAT chili paste...

African fr:Sauce arachide (which, just like Moambe (palm nut sauce, or palm nut stew, palm nut cream), is sometimes called peanut "sauce" and sometimes peanut "stew")
I'm confused -- "peanut sauce" seems about as broad a name as you can get for sauces involving peanuts. Why would satay sauce be a broader concept?--Yaksar(let's chat) 21:11, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Scudsvlad: A few questions: 1) If the proposed move is done, should Peanut sauce be a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT? 2) The article currently uses "peanut sauce" throughout the body. If this move is done, should the prose be updated to use "satay sauce" instead? 3) Do you have an idea of which term is most commonly used in RS? Colin M (talk) 22:49, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Yaksar and Colin M: I was thinking of creating a new broad-concept article (like ko:땅콩 소스, peanut sauce) that talks about peanut-based sauces that are not of Maritime Southeast Asian origin. @Randy Kryn: Is "satay sauce" not common/recognizable? --Scudsvlad (talk) 15:25, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per common name and recognizable name. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:25, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: The solution to the nominator's concerns should probably be splitting the article into a WP:broad concept article and a separate one concerning satay sauce specifically. The current article is a bit of a mix of both, and it wouldn't be appropriate to rename the article without following up with some reorganisation of content. --Paul_012 (talk) 00:59, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's not my reading of the current state of the article. The only place that arguably might diverge from the specific Indonesian peanut sauce also known as satay sauce is the "Other countries" section, and even then that mostly seems to be talking about different regional names or uses for the particular sauce under discussion (peanut sauce aka satay sauce aka sambal kacang etc.), rather than other sauces which are made from peanuts (with the exception of the bullet about "groundnut chutney", which does seem to be a different thing). Colin M (talk) 01:40, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fair points. I was mainly looking at the Other countries section, and the China, India and Vietnam entries didn't seem to be clearly describing the same food item with the same origin. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:27, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nom and WP:COMMONNAME. This article is indeed about the Indonesian sauce commonly known as satay sauce. This would certainly always be referred to as satay sauce here in the UK. I've never heard the generic term "peanut sauce" used to refer to it. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:35, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. This article is indeed about Indonesian sauce, but globally it is commonly known as peanut sauce. —usernamekiran (talk) 21:01, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Is it? It isn't here in the UK, and we have no particular ties to Indonesia. Where's the evidence that it's globally commonly known as peanut sauce? I'm not saying there aren't other peanut sauces in the world, but this article is about satay sauce. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:12, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Support - it's an article about the Indonesian sauce, it should have a name that is recognizably about the Indonesian sauce. RedSlash 04:12, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: I'm still quite unsure about this. Looking a bit further, it appears that in the US, "peanut sauce" refers to a variety of sauces derived from the Indonesian satay sauce, but which have pretty much taken a life of their own. This article describes how peanut sauce seems to be very common in American Thai cuisine, yet such uses (except as a dip for satay) are unknown in Thailand. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:19, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose the article discusses all types of peanut sauces, with a focus on satay as the most prominent. I don't see a need to split or to narrow the focus of this article. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 23:33, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
