On 24 March 2024, it was proposed that this article be moved from Aner Shapira to Death of Aner Shapira. The result of the discussion was moved.

This is an unusual, prominent and famous event. And in addition, the event was recorded in a photograph. A man who protected several people with his bare hands and was killed in the process. I'm not sure what media can be added to a page, but this Times of Israel article includes a photo taken by someone from inside the shelter.

The video is also included in that article. It originated from the "South First Responders" Telegram page, who gave permission for it to be reproduced, if that is something that can be then uploaded.

It also may be worth adding that the dashcam video came from the car of a man named Osama Abu Assa, who can be seen outside the shelter at the start of the video. His murder was also very prominent in Israel, and while not prominent for its own Wikipedia page, that makes me think it may be worth mentioning him by name.

Abu Assa's dashcam footage is talked about in this NBC article, this YNET article mentions how Abu Assa tried to save the kids in the shelter, begging terrorists to leave them alone and how, according to survivors, Abu Assa told the individuals in the shelter not to speak Hebrew in his attempt to defend them.

This times of Israel write upalso cites a New York Times article, but I'm unable to find it -- perhaps someone more skilled than me can do so.

Since the article seems up for deletion due to its notability, to emphasize that Aner's murder was notable in Israeli society, in addition to connecting to Osama Abu Assa, may be worth mentioning that Aner's music was released after his death and has been well received in Israel: This Times of Israel article covers the release and has another photo from inside the shelter. Commemoration

Alongside the many commemorative texts, songs, and articles published on Aner, his story became famous across the sea as well. Indeed, in the little town of Beziers, in the South of France, between Montpellier and Perpignan, a special memorial was built in memory of Aner Shapira. The mayor of Beziers, Robert Menard, decided on May 27th 2024, France’s national day of resistance, to build a bronze’s bust of Aner. (2) This statue was built by the French sculptor and artist Olivier Delobel. It figures in a street called l ’Allee de l ’Ukraine Libre, or “Alley of the Free Ukraine”, next to other figures that represent resistance, such as the young Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian that was killed in 2023 for resisting the dictature regime in Iran, or Sophie Scholl, a young German student that was beheaded in 1943 for protesting the nazi movement. As a great defender of Israeli’s right to existence and to defend itself, Robert Menard also voted to twin the city of Beziers with the kibbutz Nir Oz, in remembrance of all the October 7th’s losses. On Aner Shapira’s statue is explained in French that Aner was an Israeli musician that, on October 7th, resisted the Hamas’ terrorists, and sacrificed his life to save others (3). Alongside the other busts, Aner’s statue accompanies the symbol of resistance, and is a very important help to the recognition of Israel’s history in a world where there is a rise of antisemitism and of fake news in the media.

Culture/Music

As mentioned earlier, Aner Shapira was a musician that used to write hip-hop/rap songs. After his death, his parents found on his computer many recordings and texts. To honor his memory, they decided in March 2024 to release an album, intitled “Introduction to Anerchism” , a play on word between his name Aner and the word “anarchism” (4). This album constitutes of six works that Aner wrote and partly produced, with the most popular song being “שנאת אחים”, or “Hatred of Brothers”, featuring the singer Shaanan Streett, who added a post-mortem verse to the song (5). In all of his songs, Aner shared his point of views on Israeli culture, political and societal conflicts. In order to respect his desire to share his work and ideas, the whole Shapira family helped produce and release the songs, but also created a website to share Aner’s story, and sell some merchandise, based on Aner’s multiple drawings and sketches (6).

Literature

Ever since October 7th, there have been many literary works reporting the tragic events in Israel, as well as the stories of each war victims and heroes. Aner Shapira’s story is reported in the book יום אחד באוקטובר [One Day in October], written by Yair Agmon and Oriya Mevorach (7). This project is a collection of monologues about forty heroes of October 7th, to remember and honor the actions of these regular people on this terrible day. In addition to that, a book got released in July 2024, entitled לכודים - מיגונית הגבורה בצומת רעים [Trapped – Shield of Heroism at the Reim junction] (8). This documentary work focuses on the bunker where Aner Shapira and other participants of the Nova Festival hid during the terrorist attacks. It describes Aner’s heroic combat, as well as the stories of those who survived, and the unfinished story of the ones who are still kept hostages in Gaza, like Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of Aner’s best friends.
