Why is it a mix of the politician and the football player?
Shouldn't this be fixed to only be about the politician? It hasn't yet, and I'm new here, so I didn't fix it, but I imagine someone should? There is already a wiki page for the football player. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zanemcg (talk • contribs) 04:30, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Anthony Gonzalez (politician) → Anthony Gonzalez (American football) – Back in January the page was moved to politician from being the primary topic. While it can be argued that he shouldn't be the primary topic, it should have been discussed how this page should be disambiguated. He received a page originally because of his football career. He just announced he's not going to seek a 2nd term so he's going a two-term representative. His career as a representative has been pretty unremarkable, the sole thing he's known for in his time in congress so far is being one of very few Republicans to vote in favor of Trump's 2nd impeachment trial (not trying to express my personal opinion on that hope it doesn't come across that way.) In regards to his football career, he was first team All-Big 10 and played 5 years in the NFL. Even several articles about him not seeking re-election mention his football career. - Comment this one is a bit complicated, he is notable as both a football player and politician. Not sure what they best solution is on this to be honest.--Ortizesp (talk) 15:01, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. As he is currently a congressman, and formerly a football player, we should use the "politician" tag for now. I agree that this should probably be revisited in 2023, if/when his political career is over. 162 etc. (talk) 15:35, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. More notable for being a congressman. KidAd • SPEAK 17:15, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose (at least while he is still in Congres). After completing his term in Congress, I would need to see evidence to evaluate whether he's more notable as a politician or footballer. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 19:22, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. I agree this is too soon. Most of the attention he gets these days is because he is a politician. And given his status as a congressman and his stances that conflict with his party's views, it would not surprise me if he remains in the political sphere somehow as opposed to jumping back into the football world (of course not ruling anything out). Nohomersryan (talk) 23:24, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose this is too soon. He is currently a politician and that's what he is relevant right now for. Maybe this could work later. Iamreallygoodatcheckers (talk) 18:32, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Comment—while I am likely paddling against WP:MIDDLENAME here, I still think that, in cases like this, it's best to disambiguate with middle names or initials, such that the article should be located at Anthony E. Gonzalez or similar (with both Anthony Gonzalez (politician) and Anthony Gonzalez (American football) redirecting there, to maximize the chances of a person looking for either the Colts wide receiver or the Ohio congressman winding up at the correct page). I thought the same thing at the analogous, though far more unsavoury, case of Talk:Nathan Larson (politician)#Requested move 26 March 2021. If we're stuck on following WP:MIDDLENAME, then I agree with Snooganssnoogans, Nohomersryan, and Iamreallygoodatcheckers that, right now, he's more notable in the sphere in which he remains currently engaged, and that greater time will be required to see which role he's better remembered for (though I strongly suspect that, given the impeachment thing, it will be politician—it will likely make him better-remembered than the typical two-term congressperson), and therefore oppose moving at this time. Steve Smith (talk) 03:54, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose, both per the "too soon"s above, and because the American footballer Tony Gonzalez is more well-known as a footballer. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 17:21, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Is there something in the Manual of Style prohibiting the re-titling of this article to something along the lines of "Anthony Gonzalez (player of American football and politician)"? Jim856796 (talk) 01:32, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Comment as oppose Let’s not act like his brief football career was more notable than his brief political career. Trillfendi (talk) 03:09, 24 September 2021 (UTC)
