The all Azerbaijani city names should be moved to English version as it is official versions. Moreover, there is more results in English version of it and some Azerbaijani letters is unknown to readers, which will cause problems in reading the article such as "Yardımlı". Xoncha (talk) Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/NovaSkola 09:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Again, rather than single-handedly making an undiscussed bulk moves that affects the stable titling of an entire article corpus, note that recent English books do use Turkic diacritics for Azerbaijani the same as en.wp historically has done for all Turkic geo articles: [http://www.amazon.com/Lonely-Planet-Georgia-Armenia-Azerbaijan/dp/174179403X/ Lonely Planet Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan uses Turkic diacritics] [http://www.amazon.com/Azerbaijan-Excursions-Georgia-Mark-Elliott/dp/190586423X/ Azerbaijan Excursions Guide uses Turkic script] etc. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:45, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 21 March 2021

YardımlıYardimli – Move to "Yardimli" per WP:UE/WP:COMMONNAME/WP:ENGLISH. Proof of anglicized name being the common name:

Results from Google News: Yardimli: 340 Yardımlı: 0

Results from Google Scholar: Yardimli: 121 Yardımlı: 74

Individual reliable sources referring to the city as Yardimli: Institute for War and Peace Reporting

This is the same name but an anglicized version. Unlike other small villages, this is a fairly large town, which has made a lot of appearances in English-language media, in most of which, "Yardimli" has been used much more, establishing its WP:COMMONNAME. I'd also like to ask the closing admin to give more attention to the arguments being made rather than the vote counts, as there are people who go over each RM and repeat unrelated policies as an "Oppose" argument. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 17:15, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose as previous RM in 2014. Nothing has changed, it was a high-MOS choice for en.wp then, it's a high-MOS choice now. And frankly why replace short ı with long i, when the proposed change redirects here anyway? Readers don't panic at short ı in Turkish geo titles, why should they panic at a short ı just because this is over the border in another Latin-alphabet country Azerbaijan? This is a tiny stub on an insignificant town, it's doing no harm to anyone are perfectly findable using the same full font as every other Azerbaijan geo. This is a choice of en.wp relating to all Latin-alphabet geo articles. In ictu oculi (talk) 18:43, 21 March 2021 (UTC)In ictu oculi (talk) 18:43, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The 2014 RM provided no sources and policies to back their change. Preferring an anglicized common name as advocated by WP:UE, WP:COMMONNAME and WP:ENGLISH over a scarcely used non-anglicized name isn't a MOS choice. We're not changing the name solely because it uses non-anglicized letters. The anglicized name is the common name as shown by WP:RS and WP:GOOGLETEST provided above. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 18:45, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please. WP:BADGER - and your response came so quickly that I lost some of my edit. In ictu oculi (talk) 18:52, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Replying to people to clarify their misunderstanding of my RM intent isn't badgering (it would be if I was trying to make you change your vote) and it's quite ironic for you to mention it as you were doing the exact same thing few days ago here and here. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 18:53, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
