W?FThis Wikimedian opposes rebranding the WMF as Wikipedia.

This user opposes the Wikimedia Foundation's arbitrary, opaque, and dictatorial office-banning of administrators when the community and ArbCom are more than capable of handling the issue themselves.

Orphaned non-free image File:PHP-Fusion logo.png

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:PHP-Fusion logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:40, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the dev uploaded a better version.. will need permission for that though. - Alexis Jazz 15:11, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alex Jazz. I came across this file while checking on other stuff. You listed the source for the file as File:Ted Jensen's 2002 Grammy.jpg, but that file was deleted from Commons as you probably. I'm not sure what you meant by listing that Commons file as the source. Did you mean that you simply downloaded the file from Commons and then re-uploaded as non-free content to Wikipedia or did you mean you actually took the photo of the award yourself? In the first case, if you didn't take the actual photo yourself or cannot show that it has been released under a free license, then it's essentially kind of a double non-free file that I don't think Wikipedia can use since it could be argued that a "freer" image (award licensed as non-free and photo licensed as free) could be found/created and used instead, and there may also be questions per WP:NFCC#4. If, however, you can show that the photo was released under a free license somewhere other than Commons (e.g. Flickr), then you probably can use that as the source.

Having posted the above, it's probably actually better to use the logo the RA is using on its official Grammy website than a photo of the statue because there's no question about it's copyright status and no need to worry about a photo being a WP:Derivative work. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:51, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: The photo was taken by Dmileson and uploaded to Commons, released as CC BY-SA 4.0. Really. Besides, Creative Commons can't be revoked anyway. I re-uploaded it here as fair use because Commons couldn't keep it. - Alexis Jazz 07:15, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Did he upload the photo anywhere else? Non-free files are required to be "published" per WP:NFCC#4 and I'm not sure whether a link to a deleted Commons file page would count as a valid source because it states "published or publicly displayed outside Wikipedia"? FWIW, it still seems less complicated to simply upload the logo from the Grammy website since the copyright status is clear and you can also see what the award looks like. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:31, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: WP:NFCC#4 applies only to non-free content. The depiction is free (Creative Commons), so NFCC#4 does not apply to that. The object (the Grammy) which NFCC#4 does apply to has been publicly displayed on many occasions.
In addition to that, "must be a work which has been published" does not mean fair use content has to be taken down because of linkrot. It only says you can't upload stuff that has never been published. - Alexis Jazz 08:40, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback granted

Hi Alexis Jazz. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have temporarily enabled rollback on your account until 2020-01-28. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 19:42, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

December 2019

Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you upload a media file with false or missing copyright or source information, as you did at Austin Abrams. Jkg1997 (talkcontribsCA) 15:29, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Easy there Jkg1997. It's not always necessary to leave a big scary warning, especially when it appears to be the wrong warning. It's sometimes more effective to try to have an actual conversation, especially with users who are experienced members of the community. GMGtalk 15:38, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@GreenMeansGo: This article: Austin Abrams was reverted because of this diff here, and removed by Filedelinkerbot, some users violates copyright violation caused by plagiarism. Regards, Jkg1997 (talkcontribsCA) 15:47, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jkg1997: Yes, it wasn't very difficult to figure out what you were referencing. Alexis is plenty experience in copyright. No need to throw around level four warnings, over what was probably a misunderstanding, over a DR that was closed only yesterday. GMGtalk 15:50, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jkg1997 and GreenMeansGo: Filedelinkerbot reverted itself. And since Jkg1997 didn't stop after my warning, it's Jkg1997 who can now explain themselves on the incidents noticeboard. - Alexis Jazz 01:17, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I believe edits like this were discussed here. You know more than I do, so I thought to let you know that such edits continue to occur, after the discussion was archived. Vycl1994 (talk) 21:42, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Jkg1997 is STILL doing Filedelinkerbot/CommonsDelinker's work. - Alexis Jazz 22:31, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
I'd write you this on Commonswiki, but your talk page is protected (for some unexplained reason), rarely do I see people who dedicate so much work into Wikimedia as you. Hope that you will use your precious time now on the English Wikipedia or Wikisource, stay safe. Donald Trung (talk) 16:04, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: thank you. I don't know what's going to happen from here yet. It is indeed strange, my TPA had already been revoked so the protection was not to keep me away. And why would anybody want to stop me from receiving barnstars? That wouldn't make sense, so maybe it was random protection? Indeed, unexplained and very odd. - Alexis Jazz 21:55, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Indeed, it's a mystery. (I took Rhododendrites up on that food image offer) - Alexis Jazz 07:44, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you getting unblocked yet? I thought a duration or date of appeal would have been available by now.--BevinKacon (talk) 22:16, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry.. - Alexis Jazz 15:50, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I shall put your Commons talk page on my watchlist so I am kept updated then.--BevinKacon (talk) 21:36, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Precious

Thank you for your idea for the Precious prize, but not for me, please. Great editors who are no longer alive, still live in their contribs, - I'm not ready to differentiate past and present. For some, we'll never know that they died. For some, I'm afraid they did. For me, it doesn't matter if the change from life to death happened before or after I issued the prize. You can do it differently in things you issue. - Btw, "have been" is not past tense, to my limited understanding of English, "were" would be. - Consider to self-revert in the template. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: To me it feels odd to talk about an editor as if they're still here. Though I share the thought that contributors/writers in a way live on through their work. But I feel saying "Shakespeare is a great writer" is just as odd. I chose "have been" over "were" because "were" felt too definitive, too.. I don't know. Feel free adjust the wording on the template/documentation. Unless the Precious prize is "your" thing, though in that case I would recommend a big red edit notice on the template. - Alexis Jazz 13:49, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can we do the following. The Precious template is 99% (estimated) my thing, over eight years. I don't speak about the editor, but to him or her. I will use present tense. I agree that you can leave the template as it is, and use it with the "past" parameter, but please don't expect me to do the same. Would that work? - Thank goodness, I "catch" most editors before they die. For the first such editor, I was reluctant but urged to do it by someone who was her friend. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:54, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: I see. I was unaware that 99% (your estimate) of the usage of the template was by you. Whoever uses the template is free to use it with whatever parameters they prefer. The default is the behavior as it was. I probably won't be using the template myself (at least not in the immediate future) so if you wish, I suppose you could remove the parameter, though perhaps if anyone else joins you in issuing the prize they might prefer using the parameter in some cases. I'll leave that to you. Personally, I still find it a bit confusing to see someone who is no longer with us being addressed in the present tense. Though at the same time, I can see where you're coming from. TLDR: you do you, thanks for your efforts to give good contributors some recognition. - Alexis Jazz 14:13, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. If you want more precise math look at the precious list, and count the ones not by me (Sainsf, for example). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for your thread at the VPT. Fingers crossed that you get a response. Cheers and stay safe. MarnetteD|Talk 19:55, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fma12: just wait for Commons to delete File:Redskins uniforms19.png because copyvio and there will be nothing left. - Alexis Jazz 18:26, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: I uploaded File:Redskins uniforms19.png so the Redskins uniform needed to be updated. Beyond of that, the file is not a copyvio at all so the logo displayed is not the main subject of the image. I have uploaded a large amount of NFL and NCAA uniforms that have logos on their helmets with the same criteria. Moreover, two of them were nominated for deletion and kept because of "de minimis". Nothing to be afraid of. Fma12 (talk) 18:46, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:Green-cyan plus cyan alternating.gif

Thank you for uploading free images/media such as File:Green-cyan plus cyan alternating.gif to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view your previous uploads). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading! 84.250.17.211 (talk) 04:24, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

..yeah I know alright. It's a long ass story. I won't oppose file exporters (hell, it's freely licensed, do whatever you want) but in some cases (most notably File:Fred Ott Sneeze 1894 remastered.webm and File:Fred Ott Sneeze 1894 remastered.gif I'd like to keep a local copy as I may improve it further later on. - Alexis Jazz 06:55, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox

Thank you for producing a new userbox. I was thinking of doing something similar myself. I wonder if you would consider revising the wording (or adding {{{info|your suggestion}}} to let users do that themselves). I agree that the renaming is unpopular and not in the interests of Wikipedians or other Wikimedians. However, I think it is calculated rather than stupid. When I attempted to donate to Wikipedia, I was diverted to an organisation I didn't quite understand, and I put my debit card away. Had the W?F been called "The Wikipedia Something", I'd have assumed it was a part of the encyclopedia I supported, and paid up. We have created a lot of good will for them to leverage. I oppose all three proposed names, and I should also make a politically correct comment on behalf of the orally impaired. How about This Wikimedian opposes rebranding the WMF as Wikipedia.? Certes (talk) 09:35, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: Thank you, I wasn't entirely happy with the original text. If more users like it, maybe it could be moved to the template namespace. - Alexis Jazz 09:44, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
