Social Media campaign for this year's Collab?

I know I've brought this up several years running but we've just never had anyone really big into that field, but do any folks want to pick particular social media venues and advertise the 2020 Collab?

I can cover Reddit just fine, at several subs, but if we have any Instagram or Twitter friends, especially people with some visibility in the cannabis community, that would be awesome.

Also, if anyone isn't a social media person but is good at press releases, we could assign someone to ping major cannabis media and NGOs with a press release, very clearly labeled as a WP:Cannabis vounteer project and not a formal Wikipedia corporate project. Thoughts?

Been busy with remote work stuff, but will be sure to do some translations this year (did a few for us in Feb that don't count). Also I've gotten permission from several major cannabis subreddits on Reddit to post tomorrow asking for volunteers, and very clearly will explain how they should check in on the Talk page here, use Articles for Creation vice just jamming stuff through etc. Also I'm contacting some translator subreddits to ask for volunteers so that people other than myself might help expand coverage in other languages. Just an update, will post links here after I get the announcements up. Can't promise it will pay off, but it couldn't hurt. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 02:28, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Announcement posted at:
Thank you Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney. I'm preparing a landing page refresh, partly for the newcomers. I'd appreciate your feedback. It will be posted this evening. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:06, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Templates

I've created templates in Category:420 Collaboration 2020 for adding to appropriate Talk pages.

I've also added a "Results" section to the project page so editors can showcase their contributions.

I admit, I'm also spending a lot of time on COVID-related articles lately, but I look forward to collaborating on cannabis-related content during April.

Happy editing, and stay safe, ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:32, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Landing page makeover

I've asked an artistic past contributor to the project (offline) if they can make us a cool, simplified landing page like WP:GLAM. They haven't signed up yet, so I don't want to quite announce this as a done deal. But if anybody has ideas on how to make the page sexier and inviting, please chip in here! ☆ Bri (talk) 22:08, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Here's a mockup of what we could do. There are obviously a lot of elements left over from the donor page, which was WP:GLAM. Any feedback welcome... or we could just copy it over the current WP:420 page and start editing it. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:21, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Any feedback on this mockup is welcome ☆ Bri (talk) 22:24, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
  • I actually really don't like that mockup so far as a Welcoming Landing Page. There isn't any one thing that immediately draws your eye, and with multiple split-image graphics on each side of the page, your eye is drawn in too many directions at once. It needs one singular, stand-out image, like a banner right at the top of the page, as the immediate focal point that introduces the user to the page, and then a natural and informative path for the eye to follow downwards. This could include singular images with concise captions as well as regular text content; if you want to get really imaginative, possibly a "large button" style navigation that will either fold out to give more information, or bring you to a relevant linked page. While I can see where this mockup was meant to condense the information from the current, wikipedia-default-formatting state of the page into an easier to access tab-style navigation, it ends up being too visually busy, and it's easy to not even notice the tabs at all and for your eye to skip right past them. (Wikipedia formatting has well-trained our brains where to look for the content, and the current tab style too closely mimics the wikipedia-default style title line that most users won't look too closely at before their brains just skip down past it.) You really need a central focal point at the top to immediately introduce at a glance what the page is about, and then some easy options to look at and click below that. Possibly keep the tab style navigation, but have the tabs snug up against the bottom of the introductory banner, and then further content would be below all that. Zee (talk) 22:46, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

I updated the landing page. Hope it's an improvement! ☆ Bri (talk) 00:52, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Copy edits

The Guild of Copy Editors provides general copy editing for nominated articles. Editors can submit up to 2 requests at a time here. This is a great way to get fresh eyes on articles needing copy edits, especially after major expansions or before GA/FA nominations. Consider nominating cannabis-related articles this month! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:38, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

I've nominated Morse v. Frederick. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:50, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
I've nominated Fritz the Cat (film). Please feel free to nominate other cannabis-related articles for review. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:39, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

@Bluerasberry: Perhaps there's a medical article related to cannabis you could nominate for a copy edit? ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:14, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

COVID-19

Just created Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on the cannabis industry if anyone wants to collaborate. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:30, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

FYI, I've posted tons of sources on the article's talk page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:21, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Charlotte Figi is dead

Charlotte Figi is reported dead, from complications related to COVID-19 [1]. Maybe the project can collaborate on a biography? ☆ Bri (talk) 19:32, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Bri, I created a super quick stub just to get the ball rolling... Good idea. RIP, Charlotte. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:41, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
Also, I posted an invite at WikiProject Women in Red: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red#Charlotte_Figi_and_WikiProject_Cannabis'_420_Collaboration. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:48, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

One of the founders of this company has an article, Kayvan Khalatbari, created and edited most likely by a bunch of COI accounts. If one or more of you could have a look at the company's article to see if all this detail is necessary and properly sourced, that'd be great--thanks. Drmies (talk) 18:23, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

It ticked a lot of boxes from WP:Identifying PR. Some cleanup has been done, but more wouldn’t hurt. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:21, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! Drmies (talk) 20:47, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Drmies, I've removed some bad sources and claims as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:01, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate it. Drmies (talk) 23:36, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

How has Cannabis culture never been touched by this project?! This must change in 2020. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:29, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Weed: The User's Guide has a 10 page section titled "glossary of cannabis culture". Maybe there are some ideas there. I don't have a copy, but maybe this gbooks link will work.
Also Cannabis for Dummies has two pages on culture [2]. ☆ Bri (talk) 00:55, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Cannabis etiquette

I've created a stub for Cannabis etiquette. You know, puffpuffpass and the like. Improvements welcome! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:05, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Weed: The User's Guide has a 20 page section titled "etiquette". ☆ Bri (talk) 00:56, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Just had a brainstorm re Translations for the Collab

People might not want to create an account, or learn to use the Content Translation Tool, etc. So I'm just going to create a bunch of drafts using CTT and put them in my Userspace as drafts, so all the "coding" and machine-work is done, folks can edit just in Visual Editor with an IP, etc. I'll try a half-dozen or more languages tomorrow and post them as challenges on the relevant language subs. Let's see if this works... Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 02:15, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

And here's the first success: cy:Canabis yn y Deyrnas Unedig. Props to @Naldwr: for providing translation into Welsh! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 09:29, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
And props to multiple users who prepped bn:https://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/বাংলাদেশে_গাঁজা for "Cannabis in Bangladesh." Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 19:37, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

420 (cannabis culture) is on main page

420 (cannabis culture) is currently featured on main page's "On this day" section. ☆ Bri (talk) 03:19, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Can someone good with error displays look at the bottom of haw:Cannabis ma ko Hawaiʻi?

It's giving me some error (in English) but I'm not quite sure what it wants.

Without looking at the source text, it looks like the cite template is there, but not inside ref tags, which is causing it to be read as if it should invoke a module. Add ref tags? If that's not the issue/doesn't work, someone who knows more about citations on Hawai'i wikipedia needs to have a look. Kingsif (talk) 00:52, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
I fixed it. It wanted accessdate not access-dateBri (talk) 06:29, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Also cite book. not cite book for some reason. Maybe a typo in the template name. ☆ Bri (talk) 06:52, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks @Bri:! My new method of asking for specific languages on specific geo/cultural Subreddits is paying off way better than my previous method of posting "Looking for translation volunteers in general." As you can see in the last couple days I've added Welsh, Afrikaans, Zulu, Bengali, and Hawaiian. If anyone has any other ideas for "Cannabis in Foo" articles that are short (or have an intro that could be standalone), I'm open to ideas. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 14:04, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Research resources

Booklist has gone open access

At least for now, Booklist is open for anyone to use online (announcement). It's a good source of book reviews; I'm using it now for a critique of the War on Drugs. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:10, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (US DoJ)

National Criminal Justice Reference Service has public domain synopses of many drug and drug policy related books. You can use {{DoJ}} for attribution in work created with it. ☆ Bri (talk) 19:59, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

Lesson learned from properly engaging translator demographics on Reddit

As mentioned above, I tried posting "Come help WikiProject Cannabis by making or improving articles or sharing media" and got literally zero responses and just a handful of upvotes. But then I decided to be more selectively direct and posted in subs for either a country or a language and specifically asking them to proofread machine-translated drafts as a bilingual, and here's what folks have chipped in on in just a few days, representing success (thus far) about 50% of time:

So I guess the take-away is that in my case, the more specific of a thing I ask for, the more likely I am to get a result. Filing that idea away for later. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:42, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Update: so I'm about 50% for Redditors stepping up to do translation, and of those that get translated I've had one or two cases of Admins at the target page being weird about it, including the Afrikaans admin deleting a translation with no explanation, and deleting my attempts to ask why on their Talk page. So overall success, but I'm a little concerned that Admins at some of the smaller language versions can sometimes by prickly because they're used to running their own show and not having to be collaborative or communicative. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 16:55, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Putting on my Signpost editor hat, these might be useful takeaways for the wider Wiki community. Pinging Smallbones, he's tied up with getting out the current issue but maybe this is something to consider inviting Goonsquad to write a short piece on. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:02, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Bri:. sorry but I haven't been following this story. I expect to be ready to publish in 30 minutes. Some copyediting help would be helpful!!! Thanks Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:08, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Variety reviewed Come and Toke It

I'd like to challenge another member of this project to summarize the rather lengthy write-up published by Variety magazine, "Willie Nelson's 420 celebration was the medicine we desperately needed". There are many topics to consider including the music itself, the Cannabis culture, the music- and cannabis-community response to the United States quarantine, even some bits about cooking with cannabis and botany. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:09, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Cannabis culture: recent edit
