A few steps from the border with the United States, is the Zona Norte, a red light district..
The sex workers that toil there can be cataloged in three types:
- The Paraditas
- The Streetwalkers
- The Bar Girls
Paraditas
The Paraditas are girls from the south of Mexico, who come to work, or also frequently, that are brought by their pimps. The states of where they come, are the following ones:
- Tlaxcala 24%
- Veracruz 18%
- Distrito Federal 11%
- Puebla 9 %
- Estado de Mexico 5%
- Jalisco 4%
- Guanajuato 3%
- Oaxaca 3%
- Chiapas 3%
- Other States 20%
Most of the paraditas are single mothers, and around 40% of them are pimped. Pimps get most of the money that the Paraditas make, if not all of it.
Paraditas Pimping
It is very common that the Paraditas are or have been related to a Pimp. The technique that they use consists generally on initiating a relationship with them, some even get married to them, and after a time, they say to them that they have a debt. Because of this reason they must prostitute themselves to help pay that debt. In some cases, they begin gradually: First they dance in gentlemen's clubs, or their work only consists of talking and drinking with clients. After the girls have initiated that, it is requested from them to go with the clients to prostitute themselves. All the money which they obtain from this work, it is given to the pimp. In many cases, the paraditas are “cousins” or “Nieces”, since pimps are uncle and nephew, or cousins, demonstrating a network of people trafficking organized by families. Generally, the paraditas originating from Tlaxcala have or have had pimps, although it happens with girls of all the states of Mexico.
Price Structure
The paraditas generally receive twenty dollars from North Americans, and one hundred fifty to two hundreds pesos from the local clients. This only includes to have sex with the Paradita naked from the waist down. Additional services, like total nude, positions, oral and anal sex, generally entail extra money, fifty or one hundred pesos (five or ten dollars) depending as much on the paradita as on the client.
Minors
It is common to find girls of fifteen or sixteen years working in the Zona Norte, although officially they can only work from eighteen.
Venereal Diseases
All sex workers, including the paraditas, by law, must have a medical exam every month, so that they are allowed to continue exerting their work. Nevertheless, by the conditions in which they make their work, it is possible that they contract some infections or STDs. During 2006, there were no case of AIDS, and only two of syphilis and three of gonorrhea. Smaller vaginal infections are frequent, and also it is common that they have pubic lice.
Location
The streets where the Paraditas work are:
- Constitución, between the first street (art 123) and Coahulia.
- Art 123, between Constitución and Niños Héroes.
- Niños Héroes, between the first street and Coahuila.
- Coahuila Alley.
Street walkers
Besides the Paraditas, in the Zona Norte of Tijuana there is another group of sex workers in the street: Street walkers. The Street walkers are girls, generally from the South of California, like Los Angeles and San Diego, although some times they are from places as remote as Kansas and Detroit.
Unlike the Paraditas, the Street walkers do not "stand" in a single place, but walk around the streets mentioned. Generally they are addicted to strong drugs, like heroin or crack. The services they offer are structured differently: They include the positions and total nude, as well as oral sex. The only thing that they charge extra is anal sex. The price that they charge is generally of twenty dollars.
Reasons to work in Mexico
One could asked, why do the street walkers decide to work in Mexico, being American, and being able to work in the United States, earning presumably more?
Several reasons exist:
- Prostitution is illegal in California: If one street walker is discovered exerting its office in California, she is sent one week to the jail. If they have children, they deny seeing them to them because they exert prostitution.
- Tolerance of the Mexican Authorities: In Mexico, to exert its office, they just need to pay and take their medical examination. If some client is aggressive with them, they can resort to the police without greater problem, which would be impossible in California.
- Easiness to obtain their drugs: It is relatively easy to obtain drugs in the Zona Norte.
Pimping
Generally, street walkers work independently, and the only thing that maintains them in poverty and in prostitution is their addictions to drugs.
Bar Girls
In the Zona Norte, besides street prostitution, different types from bar exist, including the ones that offer prostitution. The most popular are:
- Adelita Bar
- Chicago Club
Other bars also offer the service, like the Chabelas, the Tropical, the Tropa, Hong Kong and Miami.
A description of each one of them follows.
Adelita Bar
Location: Just in the middle of the Coahuila Street, between Niños Héroes and Constitución. Hotel: Coahuila
Most famous of the bars of the Zona Norte, the Adelita Bar was founded on 1962. The girls are from different States from the Republic, and to a lesser extent girls of the South of California, and Argentine and occasionally Brazilian who previously have worked in Monterrey or the Federal District as escorts. Unlike the Paraditas, they tend to be from Sinaloa, Jalisco, Sonora, states of the North of the Country, and not of the South.
The girls of the Adelita Bar have a quota of ten drinks, by which the waiters give two tickets to them. They must in addition, to come to work on week days if they want to have the right to work in weekends. Some of them, but in a percentage smaller than the Paraditas, are pimped by a Pimp.
The common price they charge is sixty dollars, and that includes positions and oral sex. The room, in the Coahuila hotel, costs twelve dollars.
Chicago Club
Location: Constitution, almost corner with the Coahuila. Hotel:: Jalos
Less popular and with less girls than the Adelita, the Chicago also has beautiful girls, from of states of the North of Mexico. The prices and service are similar to those of the Adelita Bar.
Hong Kong
Location:: Coahuila alley Hotel:: Cascades
More similar to a Strip Club, Hong Kong offers shows like the others clubs, and must of the girls don't offer the full service.
Tropical
Location: Coahuila almost corner with Niños Heroes Hotel:: Rizo de Oro
This bar offers the greater selection of younger girls. , Many of them nevertheless are just "fichando" (drinking and talking with the clients) or dancing for a dollar. Most of them don't offer the full service.
