Wikipedia:WikiProject Astronomy/Moon task force

Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

WikiProject Moon

The Moon task force aims to improve the quality of existing articles related to The Moon, to create articles to cover a broader range of topics, and to categorize and link them in appropriate ways. The result of this work should be articles that are accessible to the lay reader and yet also useful to the professional working in the field. This project is concerned with all subjects related to Earth's only natural satellite, and concrete proposals, suggestions and activities should be discussed on the talk page. Any and all interested parties are encouraged to participate; please let us know who you are by becoming a member.

Information

Guidelines and Wikipedia policy

Editors should become familiar with Wikipedia's policies, most important of which are No original research, Verifiability, and Neutral point of view. The best way to ensure that an article will not be modified ad nauseam by those who are not familiar with the subject is to (1) be clear, and (2) add citations. In general, one should attempt to include general citations for the lay reader, as well as citations to the scientific literature when appropriate. Citations to tertiary sources (such as news articles) or unreliable sources (such as self-published material and web pages) should be avoided.

How can I help?

  • Find pages that interest you, and to add them to your watchlist.
  • Click on "what links here." The information cited on the referring page is sometimes wrong!
  • Add wikilinks to appropriate topics within articles and cross references to the "see all" sections.
  • Identify topics that need work, and list the deficiencies in the talk page or to do list.
  • Add citations!
  • Be bold! If you don't fix it, no one will.
  • Adopt a topic and bring it to Good article status.

Categories

Categories are a major part of the infrastructure of Wikipedia. They contain lists of related articles and allow users to find articles that are related to each other. Category:Moon is the main category for the Moon, although most articles should be listed in subcategories. Beginners should use these categories to organize new or existing articles, and advanced editors are encouraged to maintain and edit the category system itself.

Article assessment

Article assessments are used for internal use within this WikiProject, as well as for selection guidance for use in the 1.0 CD release version of Wikipedia. To assess the quality and priority of an article, it is only necessary to add information to the project banner at the top of each talk page. As an example

{{WikiProject Moon| class=B | importance=Top}}

will rate the quality of the article as Class-B, and mark it as being of Top priority. Quality can be one of:

FA Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Featured article" status after peer review, and meet the current criteria for featured articles.
A Provides a well-written, reasonably clear and complete description of the topic, as described in How to write a great article.
GA The article has passed through the Good article nomination process and been granted GA status, meeting the good article standards.
B The article is mostly complete and without major issues, but requires some further work to reach good article standards.
C The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains a lot of irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant issues or require substantial cleanup.
Start An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and, most notably, lacks adequate reliable sources.
Stub A very basic description: the article is either very short, or a rough collection of information that will need much work to bring it to A-Class level.

Priority is a relative grading scheme only for articles within the domain of Moon, and can be one of:

Top Subject is a must-have for a print encyclopaedia
High Subject contributes a depth of knowledge
Mid Subject fills in more minor details
Low Subject is mainly of specialist interest

If article assessments change, or if substantial change to the topic is proposed, such as a merger, please add this to the comments section: This will show up on the bot generated list.
