This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 30 September 2020 to 29 September 2021. A total of ten coordinators will be elected, including the lead coordinator(s), with scope to vary the total number of coordinators if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator(s), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

• The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. Membership of the project is broadly construed as any editor currently involved in the project's work. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of ten appointments (including the lead coordinator), although the number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.

• Both project members and editors from outside the project are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.

I've been active since late 2016. In that time, I've created 200 articles, written 20 odd GAs and DYKs and have two FAs, a FP, and an FL (most of which are in MILHIST scope.) I joined MILHIST two or three years ago now, and have been involved in content writing and reviewing since. I've met some really great people at MILHIST, and its generally been a great experience.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?

• First of all, the articles that I write. Second, the articles that I review. I have over 80 GA reviews, and several ACRs and FACs, most of which are in the military history scope. I really enjoy reviewing articles, whether for quality assessments or at AFD/NPP.

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?

• I can help out in most of the maintenance tasks (such as content reviewing), and already write for The Signpost, so I could help with for the Bugle too, and am a new administrator, so would help out with those tasks as necessary. As I would be a first time co-ord, I would spend time watching how the more experienced users work, and learn from them, easing my way into the responsibilities.

• I'd see my self being involved in the content reviewing process, as well as providing advice (an informal role of the coord). I've got some experience in writing for The Signpost, so I could probably help at The Bugle. At first, being a new coord, I would take it slow and watch how the more experienced users do things, learning the correct way about them, before slowly getting involved myself. I'd imagine it's very similar to how I'm slowly getting more proficient with the admin tools by learning from how others do it.

• (Just curious what your response will be; maybe I can learn from your answer) A coord should help everyone or warn them in a friendly way. How would you respond if a non-native English speaker who almost cannot understand English but does want to contribute to the English Wikipedia has vandalised, violated MOS (even though they don’t understand it), violated our copyright policy, getting somehow in a discussion on a talk page, is new to the project or asking you for help? • Of course we need to be polite and courteous to new users, so the first step is to welcome them and point out what they did wrong in a simple way (while avoiding Wikipedia:ALPHABETTISPAGHETTI), guide them to where they can find help, and advise them on how to move forward. However, if the behavior continues, we cannot indefinitely tolerate vandalism and competence is required, so at some point they may have to be gently shown the door (if the behavior continues unabated, and no indication of improvement is shown). Of course, that's the worst case scenario, and hopefully we can help them navigate the complex maze of policies here. An alternative would be suggesting that they collaborate on their native-language Wiki or even the simple-english Wikipedia, which may help the user develop their English skills.

• I'd say it mainly depends on how much we're talking about, but for a sizable amount (like lifetime supply-type amounts) I would be willing to do one of the following 1) review any GAN/ACR/FAC/PR, 2) take a wikibreak, 3) consider opening a reconfirmation RFA. But no promises-- I am trying to stay at a reasonable level of fitness, which I doubt this would do wonders for. And I'm more of a pie and ice cream type of guy -- .

I am going to largely repeat what I said last time.

I have been active for less than three years and a coordinator for less than one, so feel a little hesitant in re-standing. Nevertheless, MilHist has become my Wiki-home over the past thirty months and I have much appreciated the wonderful and creative space made available for me. Working as a coordinator seems a useful way of partially paying back for the use of the "playground" and perhaps helping to maintain it as the collegiate place that it is.

Comments and questions for Gog the Mild

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?

• Working my way from writing so-so B class articles to being a regular at FAC. I honestly didn't know that I had it in me.
• More or less meeting my own target of reviewing 2 GANs for each one I nominate; 5 ACRs; and 6 FACs. See here.
• Shining a little light into some of the lesser known corners of military history. I remain especially pleased with Battle of Crécy.

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?

• Again I shall largely repeat my comments from a year ago, with a little more conviction, having had a year of on-the-job training.
• Some enthusiasm, some time, and some experience of being relatively new round here and finding some of the "obvious" and/or assumed procedures not so. As a natural Wikignome I actually enjoy some of the more repetitive or routine activities, so I am able to free some of the more experienced coordinators' time up for some of the more high-skill activities.

Harrias

Although I've been on Wikipedia since 2005, I didn't become all that active until 2009. I primarily edited in sports articles until 2015, when I went on a local history kick, which also involved my first MilHist articles, a couple of First English Civil War articles: Sieges of Taunton and Siege of Lyme Regis. I was another four years before my next; Battle of Sourton Down late last year. In that regard, I've only been an active member of this project for around a year, though I have been a significant contributor to 68 pieces of Featured content and 99 Good articles.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • Although I have done a fair amount of work in the past year at improving First English Civil War articles, I am equally as proud of the reviews carried out on other MilHist articles to help improve them, at GA, ACR and FA alike. I particularly enjoy improving articles on the smaller, more obscure engagements. Although they have a much smaller view count, it often involves pulling together disparate references to create what sometimes might be the most comprehensive single account of the engagement available.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I've been an admin for almost eight years, and lent my skills to various different processes. I'm generally pretty competent with general housekeeping tasks, and am happy to 'muck-in' wherever needed.

I have been part of the project since 2007, and was a coordinator from 2012 to 2016, and 2018-2020. I was the project Military Historian of the Year in 2012, and the runner up in 2014 and 2016. I have created or improved 81 Featured Articles, 124 A-class Articles, and 305 Good Articles. I am one of the 1,000 most active Wikipedians.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?

  The main project I worked on was improving the articles on the Manhattan Project. This involved the improvement to Good article status or better for over a hundred articles. The history of the Manhattan Project was turned into a Featured Topic. I then turned to the British nuclear project, creating the articles on its history. That is also now complete, and I have since been upgrading the odd article on nuclear weapons or logistics.

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?

  I have access to academic libraries and online journal resources, and have experience with military history research. I also write Bots, in Perl and C#. In the last year I turned to getting our MilHistBot to clean up our project backlogs.

  The main achievement has been the development of the MilHistBot. Initially it was to handle the cumbersome A-class assessment. Over time, additional tasks have been added, including maintaining the membership list, and handling project awards. Over the last year the Bot has begun helping with our backlogs. Initially the Bots used Perl, a language with which I was most familiar, but the API was not being maintained, and I feared that security-related changes to the MediaWiki API like OpenAuth might cause it to fail. I then set out to create a new version using C#. There was an existing API that someone had written, but it was fairly basic. I created a new one for my purpose, which was implemented in C# from the ground up. It has not been a complete success, as it has been plagued by mysterious failures, so no conversion of the old to the new has been performed. It has been extended to handle all the tasks performed by the Bot if the need to do so arises though, and it can do some things the Perl version cannot, like processing large categories, so it has been used for the jobs that process the backlogs.   It's important to be friendly to newcomers. I was a newcomer myself once. I soon ran into a conflict with an editor called Grant65. This was quickly defused once I convinced him that I knew what I was talking about. And that's the key to the MilHist Project. On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. A desire to contribute is not enough; you need to demonstrate that you have something to contribute. Otherwise your first encounter with Hawkeye7 may make you feel like you're being treated like an undergraduate. I have worked with newcomers, and conducted classes for them at the University of Canberra and University of Queensland. I tell them not to sweat the stuff like the MOS (does anybody understand it any more?) or markup; this will likely be handled by the first wiki-gnome that comes along. Violating copyright is more serious, and the editor may need to be served notice that this is forbidden, and can get you blocked. A common mistake is to confuse the coordinators with ArbCom. (ArbCom is itself guilty of this.) ArbCom deals with editor behavior, and resolves conflicts with blocks, bans, and banging heads together.   • Firstly, remain civil at all costs. When writing for non-native speakers, my goal is to be as clear and simple in language as possible. One of the first steps would be to hear their complete argument. One sometimes needs to ask follow up questions to get to the hear of their issue. There are many ways to arrive at a solution (I did tours overseas working with allies and wrote many exercise orders, ops manuals, and intel scenarios for non-native English speakers; I also had to keep it as plan as possible so that it could be easily translated into French, too), but a cardinal rule is "be nice" because rarely, rarely do we find people working on articles wanting to do a poor job of it.Hhfjbaker (talk) 06:49, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • That is such an unfair question! I am on a diet now as I creakingly enter my sixties, and my mouth started watering just reading your question. Oof!. I love chocolate. Everytime I went to SHAPE/NATO HQ, I always had orders for various quantities from squadron mates in Spain and Staff mates in Naples. Twice, I managed to participate in a parts run to a detachment in East Anglia followed by a weekend in Brussels. It was amazing how much Belgian chocolate, fruit lambic beer, and Trappist beer one could fit in a Whale (Douglas EA-3B Skywarrior). Returning to the actual question, I would be able to sing its praises to the poles, the Himalayas, the Dead Sea, and the Marianas Trench. It's great chocolate. I am largely a land-based creature myself, but a few years ago I was lucky enough to take a trip in an Osprey off the SEQ coast during an exercise and have (stupidly) jumped out of a perfectly good aircraft into Jervis Bay during an earlier time in my career. Anyway, regarding your time on Wikipedia, have you had much experience with the formal content review process (for instance, peer, Good article, A-class or featured)? While not absolutely necessary, having some experience either as a nominator, or as a reviewer, would help you with closing A-class reviews, which is one of the roles of the project's co-ords. G'day, thanks for getting back to me. If I can offer some advice about getting involved, I'd suggest reading through the project's talk page to get a feel for relevant discussions, and weighing in if you have an opinion (or just watching if you don't feel comfortable offering an opinion straight away). I'd also suggest nominating some of your articles for assessment at WP:MHA. Once you get a feel for the project's B-class criteria, maybe you could assess one or two of the other nominations at WP:MHA and then you can build your experience from there. If you aren't completely comfortable with completing the assessment of someone else's nomination, I'd suggest running your assessment past an experienced reviewer first to confirm if they agree with you. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • I've been working a lot in the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War area, which was (and is) still rather rough. Last count, I've worked about 33 GAs, 4 A-Class, and one FA in that area. (Shameless plug: Landis' Missouri Battery is at FAC, and needs a few reviews).
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • Hmmm. It seems to me that the most skill required areas in the project are writing and reviewing, which anyone can do. I guess I've got a clue, and I'm familiar with the project norms, so I can help out where stuff needs done.

  • Checking the monthly contest results (I'm not bothered by tedious work), closing ACRs I'm not involved with, helping organize backlog drives and contests, while still reviewing at GAN/ACR/FAC and hopefully getting some article throughput of my own, as time allows. My main coord interest would be in doing some of the more boring/tedious work; I'd also be willing to help out with the Bugle if I were ever needed. Something I'd like to see over the next year is quicker throughput at ACR.

  • Well, for one thing, I think it's important to be courteous/clear in communication. Be nice, and avoid jargon as much as possible. Thank them when they do something correctly, but gently nudge them in the right direction if they do wrong. Honestly, only a moderate level of English functioning is necessary to be able to handle this project, as demonstrated by my getting an FA despite speaking a butchered form of rural Southern American English.

I've been editing Wikipedia as a registered user since January 2016. My earliest work was on MilHist topics, mostly obscure WWI and WWII content. Since then I've bounced around some in my content areas, though I always end up returning to MilHist. These days it's mostly African military history of the 20th century. I am a member of the World War I task force, World War II task force, and the African military history task force. I have never been a coordinator for the MilHist project.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • My first ever A-class and Featured article, Operation Grandslam, will always hold a special place in my heart due to the work and excitement that went into crafting it, as well the uniqueness of the topic. However, what stands out now is probably the work I did to bring all of the battles related to the Uganda–Tanzania War to Good topic status. It was a pleasant experience collaborating with another user to produce the content, and, after spending months sifting through a spotty historiography, I'm proud of the finished product as one of the better areas in which African military history is represented on Wikipedia.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I've done my own share of reviews and assessments of articles, though certainly not as many as the people listed above. I think the most unique thing I can bring to the project as a coordinator is my level of accumulated experience dealing with Africa-related articles. It is one of our underserved areas, and I hope that in the position of coordinator I can more readily assist other editors who wish to "take the plunge" into the topic in navigating sources, naming conventions, etc. which are unfamiliar to many.   • As informal as the position of coord is, I imagine that of the responsibilities laid out for it I'd be participating the in more informal ones. General project guidance, helping with The Bugle (I've made some contributions before and I have some Signpost experience), tagging and assessing, handling some GA, FA, and A-class reviews, etc. The most formal function I see myself performing would be closing ACRs. Quite frankly the contests are of little interest to me and I'm happy to let others do the lions' share of that work, though I could see myself helping with a backlog drive.

  • Well, firstly, vandalism is vandalism, and a simple terse warning is all that is required for that. As for the good faith contributors, I think the best thing is to encourage them in the long run to look at contributing to another language wiki in as simple, few words as possible. The one thing I think these less-than-fluent English wiki users can really do to help us is to redirect us to some good foreign sources of which we might not be aware. So, it never hurts to ask them if they can provide a good link or directory listing for something like that. I remember once an Ethiopian-origin user providing some rare details on detainees in an Italian prison camp during the occupation of Ethiopia using an Amharic book they possessed. We likely would've never known about that information without them.

  • Establish radio transmitter at Mwanza, Tanzania. Broadcast messages out on Uganda's Entebbe Air Force base frequency, declaring that the tarmac is under artillery fire and directing incoming flights to reroute to Mwanza where I have the local air strip surrounded by troops. I've been a member of the project since 2008 or so and have been a coordinator from 2009 to 2011, including one term as lead coord, and again since 2016 (I had taken a step back while I was in grad school). My primary area of interest is 19th and 20th century naval history. I'm happy to continue helping out with the various coordinator tasks.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • Probably the WP:OMT special project, the goal of which is to document all of the modern battleships at Good Article quality or better. The project is nearly complete, and we just finished the French portion of the topic. I've written 82 FAs, most of which are within the scope of OMT.

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I have a fair bit of experience with various aspects of Wikipedia, and I'm an admin, so I can help with issues that require those tools.

G'day, for those that don't know me, I'm a retired Australian Army officer, and I've been a member of the project since 2011, and with the exception of a year break in 2016-2017, have served as a coordinator continuously since September 2013, with the last two years as lead coordinator. So, I know the ropes, and if I don't know something about the project I know who does. Being a coord is a lot less onerous than it used to be in my earlier days, thanks to Hawkeye7's Milhistbot, so the main coord jobs are now running drives, checking the monthly contest, closing A-Class reviews, handing out awards and setting up election pages like this one. I do all that stuff pretty consistently. I also like to celebrate individual project members' milestones in our monthly newsletter The Bugle, and nudge people to finalise reviews or ask for additional reviewers to keep our production line of quality content rolling. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • I'm proud of the 58 Featured Articles I've contributed to, and particularly those in the rather fraught "Yugoslavia in World War II" area I mainly edit in, some of which have been promoted despite the best efforts of POV-pushers to derail them. But I am most proud of my contribution to reviewing at GAN, ACR and FAC, because it is my way of giving back to other editors who have reviewed articles I've nominated and helping new editors develop their skills and navigate assessment, and keeps our quality assessment processes ticking over.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I have pretty much done everything coords need to know how to do, I'm here a lot because I'm retired, and I get stuck in to whatever needs doing in a timely way. I am also an admin, so can help with housekeeping jobs as needed by project members like page moving and deletions. I also have a strong track record of defending the project against those who would like to disrupt or undermine it and our collective efforts.

  • This can vary depending on what response I get to my initial interaction. If the individual seems to be reading the policy I point them to, and are improving their editing, I try to be as helpful as possible. However, I mostly work in a controversial area (Yugoslavia in WWII), and if they persist in vandalism, copyright vios or POV editing after I have tried to set them straight, I don't believe we are required to assume good faith indefinitely, and depending on whether I am involved on not, I will use the admin tools or report them on a dramaboard.   • If the edit in question appears to be vandalism I tend just to revert with a terse comment, but if the editor is sincere in wanting to contribute, I'll point out where he's making mistakes while providing links to the correct way to do things. Every so often I have encountered editors whose command of English isn't as good as they might have thought it was and I've spent quite a bit of time pointing out errors and making suggestions for improving their language skills.

Comments and questions for Zawed

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • Generally, it has been the improvement of New Zealand related subjects within the project, having contributed to 25 A-Class articles, and about 65-odd GAs (with a few Aussie-related GAs on top of that as well). In the past year, I have worked towards bring three articles within the scope of the project to Featured Article status.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I attend to various administrative-related tasks within the project - assessing articles, closing A-Class reviews, helping checking contest entries and so on. I try and help with the reviewing workload as well.

• I would consider that I have achieved at least some of what I set out to do as a coordinator - closing A-Class reviews, assisting with the contest. • (Just curious what your response will be; maybe I can learn from your answer) A coord should help everyone or warn them in a friendly way. How would you respond if a non-English speaking Wikipedian who almost cannot understand English but does want to contribute to the English Wikipedia has vandalised, violated MOS (even though they don’t understand it), violated our copyright policy, getting somehow in a discussion on a talk page, is new to the project or asking you for help? Except for a one year break, Ian Rose was a coordinator of this project from March 2009 to September 2019, including a year as lead coordinator in 2014–2015. In that time, he has made significant contributions to the project in many areas. Highlights have included: his co-editorship of The Bugle since 2011; award of the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves twice (2009 and 2015), he has successfully nominated 81 Featured Articles, putting him in overall seventh place across en WP; has been nominated ten times for Military historian of the year; and is one of only six editors to have received the A-Class Medal with Diamonds award. On top of all this, Ian makes a massive contribution to en WP as a whole via his role as a Featured Article candidate coordinator. In recognition of his long-standing contributions to the project, on behalf of the @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I'd like to nominate Ian to be appointed as Coordinator Emeritus. The objective of this nomination is that the project and the coordinator team may continue to benefit from Ian's help and experience. While the position has no special responsibilities, it comes with the ability to act as a coordinator in all respects, and is held for as long as Ian wishes. If this nomination is successful, Ian would join Kirill Lokshin, Roger Davies and TomStar81 who have been Coordinators Emeritus since 2008, 2009 and 2018 respectively. The appointment would be in addition to the coordinators appointed via the above election, and unlike the general coordinator election, the voting period commences immediately. 31. Support: Since he joined Wikipedia's ranks in October 2005, Ian has been an invaluable content creator, reviewer and co-ordinator (at both MILHIST, FAC and other corners of this site). His articles are always thoroughly researched and are written in a no nonsense, efficient and engaging manner. I greatly enjoyed working with him on two FACs -- riding on his coattails, largely. He is an honest, down to earth contributor who can be relied upon to be calm and measured in his interactions with others. He is, in my opinion, a true gentleman and his ongoing involvement with Wikipedia in any capacity is a massive boon. Thanks for your efforts, Ian. All the best.
