Presentation - "Wikipedia's place in health communication"

"Wikipedia's place in health communication" presented by Lane Rasberry, Wikipedian in Residence at Consumer Reports

0:00-0:05 - introductions
0:05-0:15 - presentation
0:15-0:25 - Q&A and general discussion about Wikipedia
0:25-2:00 - hands-on workshop

Wikipedia has been one of the most consulted sources of medical information for a generation. Despite popularity among readers, Wikipedia has a challenging relationship with universities, researchers, and educators in public health. This talk explores the place of health information on Wikipedia among health information on the Internet and shares the precedent for universities responding to Wikipedia.

The event will start with a presentation which gives the Wikipedia community perspective on the following:

  • To what extent does Wikipedia matter in health communication?
  • How does one edit Wikipedia?
  • What is Wikipedia's quality control system?

Following the presentation, anyone may ask any question about Wikipedia to get answers or demonstrations.

Participants in the workshop will practice the following skills -

  1. Identifying reliable sources
  2. Adding information from reliable sources to Wikipedia
  3. Citing one's sources
  4. Asking the Wikipedia community for review and feedback
  5. Responding to feedback, and potentially continuing the editing cycle of adding information then getting review and either revising or resolving the matter
