Suspected sockpuppets

Well. Since I came back to NPP, I've seen a spate of articles from (usually) single-use accounts, all posting copyrighted information from technical textbooks. I brought this up in ANI (see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Series_of_very_brief_pages_on_highly_technical_subjects) and haven't gotten a lot of traction. This could be sockpuppets or meatpuppets, perhaps it is some homework assignment, but this is overwhelming NPP. Mr. Vernon (talk) 08:15, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also notice many similarities in the names. Besides the South Asian origin, you have frequent pairs: Singhkumar/Skumar125, Amik9pande/Kami9pande, Anushu100/Anshulsingh870, etc. If you need article names, you should be able to find lists on the Talk pages (since I used Twinkle and they should automatically have been added. Of course the contents are gone but a few books came up more than once.) --Mr. Vernon (talk) 08:43, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I added BT14MEC030 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) to the list. De728631 (talk) 23:08, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reminds me of the India Education Program, which also resulted in lots of badly written articles on technical topics from South Asian editors, many of which were copyvio, duplicates or promotional. I can readily believe this is a class assignment, but whether we block them as a result is another matter. Hut 8.5 10:41, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd think fairly certainly a class (or classes...) assignment. One where Wikipedia has not been properly explained to the class. I did a Google search on Grouprsv as that was the only one that I saw that argued about deletion, and by the name could possibly be an instructor posting examples. I couldn't find anything seeming to be related, but I didn't go too far as there was heavy irrelevancy from other rsv subjects. This appears to be the only one not editing under a personal name, judging from the list above. I can predict that a CU would find a relationship of IP, but probably not machine. Definitely a geographic link. I hope that the instructor has taken note, but in previous cases they seem to think they know Wikipedia better than we do, and that if it isn't what they think it is, it ought to be changed to fit them. • I'm not quite sure how we are supposed to be patient with them. Articles are still being created, see Richer Coasting System, this user was given an l4 warning and they still went ahead with creating it. What should we do? --Mr. Vernon (talk) 15:54, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've tagged it A10. Peridon (talk) 19:12, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I also tagged another Workpart transfer mechanisms‎ which was a blatant copyvio (thanks to Google Books.) I am a bit concerned that some editors have just added a redirect to another article - my understanding is that the copyrighted text must be removed, and we should always notify someone so that this can happen. Is that correct? --Mr. Vernon (talk) 19:18, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am closing this investigation, as it does not appear to be a case of sockpuppetry. OF course, that does not mean that there aren't problems with these editors, and those problems must be dealt with. As Materialscientist rightly says, in the first instance the way to deal with them, as in any case of good faith but problematic editing, is patience and communication. That is more difficult in a case like this one than in a more typical case, because of the very large number of editors to communicate with, but it still must be done.
