Suspected sockpuppets

Two brand new accounts editing the exact same three articles (Harla people, Proto-Somali, Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland)) at the same time. At best, maybe two people coordinating, as their edits are happening sometimes within minutes of each other on the same article with apparently no conflict and zero talk page communication.

Also appear to be pushing a similar POV at Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland), by removing any expression of doubt on the claim of the mosque's age: Doherty93 keeps removing the inline maintenance template and/or replacing it with citations to irrelevant sources ([1], [2], [3], [4]), while See2eyes recently followed up by reinserting an unsourced claim about being the oldest mosque in Africa ([5]). That See2eyes edit also sounds related to Doherty93's recent comment on his talk page here, where they suddenly start talking about this mosque being built before any mosque in Egypt (likely a reference to published claims that Egypt has the oldest mosque in the world Africa, Amr ibn al-As Mosque, which is otherwise irrelevant to the discussion).

Their behaviour looks like someone who's edited Wikipedia before, so if these are indeed socks, there may be an older sockpuppeteer account and/or other socks. R Prazeres (talk) 17:50, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I dug a little further in Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland) and found that it was created and largely written by sock accounts years ago, who added most of the problematic material that these new accounts are trying to protect. E.g.:
  • LTA and sockpuppeteer account Middayexpress (see SPI archive) is the one who created the article and added the initial claim about the mosque's age ([6]) which Doherty93 is now trying to protect.
  • The unsourced claim of "oldest in Africa" was added later by Bayesedam ([7]), who was blocked as a sock of Habar Awal king (see SPI archive).
I'm not familiar with these other sockpuppeteers and there have been no recent cases involving them, but still noting it here in case the CUs or others see a connection. R Prazeres (talk) 01:09, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One day after dispute involving a certain mosque ends in User:Doherty93 being banned for sockpuppetry of User:Bennyblanco10, a new user [[8]][[9]] edits along very similar lines, with a similar concern about the page being "desecrated". 4.16.149.14 (talk) 15:43, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, a blatant WP:BLOCKEVADE. The dramatic/aggressive language used in the edit summaries is a continuation of the previous sock's behaviour, e.g.: see the later edit summaries of Bennyblanco10 here, or Doherty93's responses at Talk:Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland) and at WP:ANI report ([10], [11]). R Prazeres (talk) 17:30, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I hope it's ok to ping Bbb23, who blocked Doherty93 (the previous sock) yesterday due to disruption. Stick2truthman is directly continuing that disruption at Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland) (described at my now-closed ANI report) less than 24 hours later. A WP:BLOCKEVADE and WP:DUCK of Bennyblanco10. Brand-new account whose only edit so far ([12]) is to restore content added to Proto-Somali by the previous socks, Doherty93 and See2eyes ([13] or see article history). R Prazeres (talk) 04:20, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Likely WP:BLOCKEVADE account after the last socks were blocked.

One of the last articles Bennyblanco's socks edited was Ahmed Girri Bin Hussein Al Somali, and one of the main changes they made was to remove maintenance templates with no explanation ([14]). Brand-new account Adamsanels has done the same thing twice ([15], [16]).

Note: They claim they fixed the sourcing, but they just superficially added citations to sources that are either low-quality and/or not apparently relevant for verification ([17]), which is also something the socks used to do in at least one other article when edit-warring over the removal of maintenance templates, e.g.: Doherty93 at Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Somaliland) did this, and then both Doherty93 and Stick2truthman (another sock) resorted to that tactic: [18], [19], [20], [21] (none of the citations in these were fixing the problem).

Previously, the sockmaster has created multiple sock accounts at the same time (see previous CUs), so if this is confirmed, then it's likely that there may be others. R Prazeres (talk) 17:41, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Brand new account, immediately after the last sock being blocked (see ANI report here, though it may be archived by the time CU reads this). Their sole edits so far are to restore (probably copy-paste, in fact) the changes that a previous sock (Berterinho) made to a section in Afar people: compare this with these (see "Afar Egyptian War" section).

As mentioned in previous report, the sockmaster has been consistently creating multiple new accounts each time they get blocked, so there may be others. R Prazeres (talk) 17:37, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of multiples: adding Niceguy222, another brand new account whose sole edit is to restore the sock's edits at Leelkase: compare this vs the version the last socks were pushing here or here). Their edit summary sounds deliberately contrived and it's unlikely an independent editor would out-of-the-blue endorse everything a previous sock did less than a day later. New user is restoring the edits of another recently banned sock[22], over here MrBarbarosa makes an edit and then Maxamedsalax (another recent account) adds on to that edit and corrects a spelling error[23]. I think this needs a CU incase of any more alternative accounts. Socialwave597 (talk) 22:15, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The socks have been disruptive on the particular article Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi recently [24]. The master states the Harari people are not an ethnic group [25], this seems to be the same position that this new sock is taking see [26] Magherbin (talk) 18:46, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A few minutes after the block of one of the socks, this new account appears to edit the Zeila article [27] [28]. New account is removing Harari from same Ifat Sultanate article like the master likes to do [29] [30] Magherbin (talk) 18:44, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All you do on Wikipedia is spread misinformation. Some of it is articulated well but they’re based on Haile Salassie rhetoric. It’s sad. @Socialwave597 and you need to face reality. The world already knows. The books have already been published. Guleedabdi (talk) 19:41, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You need to stop wasting people's time. Socialwave597 (talk) 19:48, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What do you gain out of this I wonder? We live in the 21st century. The world sees Ethiopia no different to Burundi or Rwanda. Oromo rule the country. There’s no more Habash. Why don’t you turn on Oromo instead of Somali? U scared? Guleedabdi (talk) 19:50, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is obviously a sock of Bennyblanco10. The fact that they've come here to make personal attacks against other editors, without denying the allegation, all but confirms it (along with the repeat of edits by previous socks, e.g. [31] vs [32]). I would also recommend a CU on this, given the sockmaster's past behaviour of creating multiple accounts at a time. R Prazeres (talk) 01:53, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PS: @Magherbin, if the personal attacks continue, I recommend filing a report at WP:ANI to get them blocked more quickly, while the admins here can follow up for a more long-term solution. Linking to this SPI and to diffs like this should help make the point clear. R Prazeres (talk) 02:00, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And here they are apparently admitting to being a sockpuppet. R Prazeres (talk) 02:21, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Magherbin: could you not file cases with a space in front of master's name again? Don't immediately have time to resolve this, so requesting clerk action to move to the correct title. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 03:32, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Likely a sock see removal of Harari redirect [44] [45] uses the same edit summary "more accurate" [46] [47] Another IP same range editing article related to a recently blocked sock. [48] [49]. Two socks have been edit warring to keep the Somali term in the introduction since January 24 on Garad and now a new user is doing similar edits see [50] [51] [52] Magherbin (talk) 12:26, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

These two socks revisit many articles that were edited by previous socks. They have come to my attention when @Sil931 restored an edit by the confirmed sock Ynilsa (talk · contribs):

The choice of the target is highly ideosyncratic and unintuitive since there is no mention of Proto-Cushitic at all, so it requires some loose random associations that point to a single actor.

@Riminerw subsequently expanded a related redirect into a main article and used the same ideosyncratic link target in a piped link:

Additionally, @Riminerw has added a number of Google Books links that geolocate to the UK, but have Swedish language settings:

  1. Diff: [56], Google Books link: [57]
  2. Diff: [58], Google Books link: [59]

I have found the same pattern with the confirmed socks Wiilciise1 (talk · contribs) and Philantro Man (talk · contribs):

  • @Wiilciise1: #Diff: [60], Google Books link: [61]
  • @Philantro Man: #Diff: [62], Google Books link: [63]

Looking at the history of abuse, I suggest to check beyond these two accounts for sleepers. Austronesier (talk) 10:26, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
