File:The Joshua Tree.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Joshthetree (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This image contains a small version of the photograph of the rear cover of U2's The Joshua Tree[1], and as such could only be employed as a fair-use image. However, it is not in use in any article, and as an orphaned fair-use image should be deleted CSD F5 (if not a copyvio, since a claim of fair-use was never actually made). -- Rrburke (talk) 00:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some people make them "orphaned"... on purpose. So let me think... some guy removes a picture from an article. Another guy claims that a picture is orphaned and maybe a third guy deletes it? What a shit factory.

The files appear to be originally published in a 1971 year book, available at the Azureys Cats website. There is attribution on the images, but there is no copyright line. As such, I'd say the image is public domain, and have updated this image (and the one below) accordingly. Microchip08 (talk) 14:36, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:NFCC#3b: much larger than needed to understand the meaning of the image. Stefan2 (talk) 15:39, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What NFCC#3b says is
An entire work is not used if a portion will suffice. Low- rather than high-resolution/fidelity/bit rate is used
There is nothing in there about the final, raw pixel dimensions of the image, as well there should not, since that is irrelevant -- you seem to be confusing the quantity of material excerpted from the original work with the physical dimenstion of the image uploaded. I had this conversation already [2] and since then, two more times the image has been mindlessly templated, and twice I've reverted, referring to that conversation via diff in the edit summaries [3][4].

Now, instead of engagement with what I said there, up pops a deletion discussion. This image is used in an article which will appear as a DYK on main page in a few days, so please, will you look at the actual image, and what I said in the discussion linked, instead of mindlessly templating?

You seem to be saying that it's possible for image X to qualify for fair use, while image Y (obtained by blowing up image X) to not qualify. That's nonsense, and if you don't see why that's nonsense then you shouldn't be dealing with NFCC issues. If what you're actually saying is there's some rule by which WP has restricted the pixel dimensions on NFCC images it uses, I will of course respect that, but so far no one's pointed to such a rule. Thanks. EEng (talk) 16:25, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The current revision of the file is larger than what is needed to understand the article. It therefore violates WP:NFCC#3b. The uploader is removing requests to fix the file and uploads higher resolution versions when the file has been fixed, so the only option was to take this to a deletion discussion. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:36, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just pointed out that NFCC refers to the portion (whether relative or absolute) of the work excerpted, and not the physical size of the file stored, and yet you're still talking as if it's the former rather than the latter that matters. You seem so unfamiliar with the circumstances here that your reply to me refers to "the uploader", as if you do not realize that that is me. Furthermore, I didn't merely (as you imply) simply "remove requests to fix the file" and "upload higher resolution versions" -- as I just pointed out to you I gave diffs of an earlier discussion on this matter, with a request that the points made there be responded to, and I re-uploaded an enlarged version of the same file, not what you call a "high-resolution" version. I repeat that if you don't understand the difference, then you aren't competent to be dealing with these matters. Please read the discussion diffed above before replying again. This is getting tiresome. EEng (talk) 17:11, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Delete Way too big. I know WP:Image resolution is only a rough guideline, but 476000 pixels where one would expect around 100000 pixels is not acceptable. The version of "06:00, 3 June 2014" at 99552 pixels is just as readable.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:47, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This has nothing to do with WP:Image resolution being "only a rough guide", but rather that no one pointed it out, and without it it's absurd to talk about what "one would expect", since there's no way to know what the expectation is. I asked above, "If what you're actually saying is there's some rule by which WP has restricted the pixel dimensions on NFCC images it uses, I will of course respect that, but so far no one's pointed to such a rule." Finally someone's doing that -- too bad no one could be bothered before as it would have save a lot of needless discussion. I've uploaded a new image at 0.1M px. Are we done now? This could have been handled much better. EEng (talk) 19:06, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Keep Delete struck out, as current version size is now OK. I appear to have come late to this discussion, pity no one else pointed out that link earlier - I know it's not easy to find!  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:27, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think a little education is in order for the patrollers. I feel a bit jerked around, asking over and over for human attention and just getting the same templates repeated. EEng (talk) 23:37, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
<bump> Since the article in which this img is used will be a DYK in the next few days, could I ask that this debate be closed, the deletion notice removed, and the other minutiae of fair use e.g. |image has rationale=yes, deletion of prior, noncompliant uploads, etc. be attended to? Fails WP:NFCC#8: not critically discussed. Stefan2 (talk) 16:06, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ok, so what exactly kind of photo were you two geniuses expecting then from a man who died in a period & culture where 1)no paintings or drawings of him were allowed and 2)who is not alive today and 3)whose shrine/mausoleum is destroyed? some actual ADVICE here would be appreciated too... Grandia01 (talk) 05:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is not an article of a shrine. A picture of a shrine does not help you understanding an article about a person who happened to be buried there. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:05, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
there are tons of articles here that have photos of the person-in-the article's shrine. anyway, ok, for the second time I am asking you then, what kind of photo do you think is appropriate to be on there? Grandia01 (talk) 10:42, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is perfectly fine to have a freely licensed photograph of the gravestone or the shrine. The problem is that non-free photographs violate WP:NFCC#8. You are probably looking at articles which contain freely licensed photographs of gravestones. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:35, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
but that is a free photograph from photobucket (everyone knows that)... did I choose the wrong "license" template then? Grandia01 (talk) 10:37, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Photos from Photobucket are normally unfree. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
ok thank you. so which license template would you recommend instead to make this work please? Grandia01 (talk) 05:54, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
None. The image should be deleted for failure of the non-free content criteria, per my initial statement above. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:29, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia cannot work, if people like you remove sourced content. Nobody believes in the written words of a WP author. Nobody believes in Wikipedia. But it looks completely different if you add some quotations and some original images that underpin the written word. Both images prove the existence and the use of the genre term. So why do you think that this isn't useful for the reader and the reader's understanding? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RivetHeadCulture (talkcontribs) 16:34, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No answer? First of all: The picture proves that the term is much older than people believe, e.g. it predates shoegazing. That's an important fact. For many years, people tried to destroy the article, because they always thought that the genre term is a neologism.
Furthermore, it proves the connection between the genre term and the record label (Projekt Records, mentioned in the article). I really don't care if you remove all the other pictures, but this one (and maybe the Heavenly Voices picture that also proves the use of the term) are very important for the reader's understanding! The removal is contra-productive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RivetHeadCulture (talkcontribs) 09:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The image proves nothing as there is no apparent connection between the image and the text in the article. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:04, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
