Dr. Debraj Shome, (b. 26th august 1977) is an Indian Ophthalmologist. He has made many contributions to the field of Ophthalmology. He founded and leads the Ophthalmic and Facial Plastic Surgery, Orbit and Ocular Oncology Department at Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India. Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, The President of India honored him with the coveted “Researcher of the Year Award” in 2007. Shome is currently the Honorary Consultant at the Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai.

Education and Career

Shome was born and raised in Mumbai. He studied medicine at Grants Medical College, Mumbai University, and graduated in 2000 with a first-class degree. He then pursued a Diploma in Ophthalmology from one of the most well-known tertiary eye-care centers in Asia, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. He graduated in 2003. During a fellowship at the L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad (2004-2005), he specialized in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology. Dr. Shome has been a fellow and member of the Royal College of Surgeons since 2003.

Service

Dr. Shome started his medical career by assisting various internationally known oculoplastic surgeons in the United States and the United Kingdom. Before beginning a fellowship at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, he worked as a consulting ophthalmic surgeon at the Rotary Eye Institute, Mumbai. He also took up observer-ships ophthalmic surgeons such as Dr. Bita Esmaeli, Dr. Charles Soparakar, Dr. John McCann, Dr. Stephen Bosniak, Dr. Marian Zilkha, Mr. Richard Collin and Mr. Geoffrey Rose.

Achievements

Gogen Yamaguchi was a world reknown Grandmaster of Japanese Karatedo and founder of the International Karate do Goju Kai Association; he was arguably one of the most famous of all Karate masters to come out of Japan. Prior to his death he was decorated by the Emperor of Japan (1968) with the Ranju-Hosho, (translation- Blue Ribbon Medal) which is a fifth order of merit, for his enormous contribution to the spread world wide of the Japanese martial arts.

Early Years

According to his autobiographic work Karate Goju-Ryu by the Cat. 1963 Rapid Print Co. Ltd Tokyo, Japan Gogen Yamaguchi was born on January 20th in 1909 in Miyakonojou Shonai Miyazaki Ken Japan, a Prefecture near Kagoshima city on the Island of Kyushu .It was during his 5th year of primary school that Gogen commenced his karatedo training under the guidance of Maruta San a carpenter joiner from Okinawa. Maruta San was a Gojuryu practitioner and was drawn to the young Yamaguchi's serious attitude and his willingness to train hard. Maruta taught Gogen Yamaguchi all that he knew about the Goju Ryu fighting arts.

Gogen Yamaguchi was named Jiitsumi Yamaguchi by his father Tokutaro who was a merchant and later a schoolteacher and superintendent; his mother was Yoshimatsu . Jitsumi was their 3rd son and there were ten children in this very large Japanese family. Gogen Yamaguchi was also famously known in the world of Karate do as ‘the Cat’; he was a very small man, just over five feet and a mere 160 pounds, however he projected the impression of great bulk and an aura reminiscent of the samurai era. He was first dubbed 'the Cat' by American GI’s for his gliding walk and flowing hair. He alone was primarily responsible for the spread of Gojuryu throughout the world today whereby hundreds of thousands of practitioners have experienced some form of training within traditional and non traditional Karate Dojo. According to Gogen Yamaguchi himself when interviewed by French magazine 'Karate' journalist Rolland Gaillac, April 1977 edition , he stated: "Even today, young man, if you were to face me in combat, I would be able to determine in a second the strength of your Ki. Immediately I would know if you were a good opponent. It is this quality, and no other, which has given me the name of The Cat."

Early training in Kyoto

Gogen's first serious taste of Goju Ryu Karate-do wasn't until his large family moved to the Kyoto area in Kansai whilst he was in his teens, Gogen then began the serious study of Karatedo with Sensei Takeo Maruta . Maruta was also a carpenter or joiner by trade and was himself a student of the legendary Chojun Miyagi of Okinawa. Gogen Yamaguchi studied directly with Chojun Miyagi later in 1929 after he and his then current teacher and friend Jitsuei Yogi wrote to Chojun Miyagi and invited him to come to Japan.

Gogen meets Chojun Miyagi

Chojun Miyagi visited the University dojo schools of Kansai, Osaka, Ritsumei, Kyoto, and Doshisha Universities, whilst Gogen was attending the Ritsumei Kan University in Kyoto. There he studied Law and in 1930 Yogi together with Gogen Yamaguchi co-founded the Ritsumei-Kan Dai-Gaku Karate Kenkyu Kai, the first Karate club at Ritsumei-Kan University. The Ritsumei-Kan Karate-do Kenkyu Kai was the first University Karate club in western Japan and was infamous for its hard style training and fierce Karate fighters. Both Yogi and Yamaguchi attended Ritsumei-Kan University during the time Chojun Miyagi visited, and Chojun Miyagi stayed in Sensei Yogi’s apartment.

Chojun Miyagi later gave Gogen Yamaguchi the responsibility for spreading Goju Ryu on mainland of Japan. In the early 1930’s Gogen designed what would become the legendary signature Goju Ryu fist. It is said to be modeled after the right hand fist of Chojun Miyagi.

Introduces Jiyu Kumite and Forms the All Japan Karate do Federation

After graduating from the Ritsumei Kan University in Kyoto during 1934, that same year Gogen designed and introduced Jiyu-Kumite which has become known today as sport and tournament fighting Kumite.In 1935 he officially formed the All Japan Goju Kai Karate-Do Association (now today’s I.K.G.A.)Also in 1935 Gogen began his travels with the Japanese Government as an intelligence officer and his first son Norimi Gosei Yamaguchi was born.

Military Life WW2

During his military tour in Manchuria, Gogen was seized by the Russian military in 1942 and incarcerated as a prisoner of war in a Russian concentration camp, it was here that he battled and defeated a live Tiger according to his autobiography (cited above). Gogen Yamaguchi was originally targeted for hard labour in the POW camp however he had impressed even these hard nosed Russians and who discovered who he was and requested that he teach Karatedo to the Russian soldiers, it was then that, 'the prisoner became the master of the guards, who became his students'.

In 1945 after returning from the Manchurian P.O.W. camp and finishing his tour of duty from World War II, Gogen returned to Japan where he re-opened his initial Karatedo Dojo in Nippori which was later destroyed by fire, and advertised with a sign outside reading Goju Ryu Kai. Many people thought his school was closed forever and that he had been killed in the war, accordingly Gogen held large exhibitions in Tokyo which showcased the various Chinese and Japanese martial arts that he had experienced. His school re-opened and moved at a later date to the Suginami Ku area of Tokyo. Here he quickly expanded throughout a network of independent Goju-Ryu dojo 'schools'. The rapid growth and expansion was reinforced by Gogen's energetic and forceful persona which resulted in a worldwide network of Karate schools which he single handedly built into a powerful martial arts empire.

Registers the name Goju Ryu - Opens his Honbu Dojo

Gogen Yamaguchi established the legendary Goju-Kai Headquarters in Suginami Ku Tokyo Japan nearby to the busy shopping precinct of Roppongi. It was also at this time that he registered the name Goju-Ryu formally with the Butoku-Kai, (the official government body and Headquarters for the Japanese Martial Arts).By 1950 Goju-Kai Headquarters was officially relocated to the Suginami Tokyo school which contributed to an almost tripling of membership to 450,000 according to his autobiography. Five years later he officially chartered the I.K.G.A. Later in 1964 Gogen Yamaguchi unified all the Karate Dojo in Japan to form the All Japan Karate-do Federation which is still in existence today as the Japan Karate Federation (JKF).

Goju Ryu Kai spreads throughout the western world

By 1966 his Organization counted more than 1,200 Dojo and clubs and 600,000 members within the Goju Kai system. Peter Urban had opened his New York Dojo and initiated the spread of the style throughout the USA. At that time in Australia, Paul Starling (the most senior non-Japanese pupil graded by Gogen Yamaguchi), had been training for four years with Gogen's first Australian student Mervyn Oakley. Current World Vice President of the IKGA Paul Starling 7th Dan, went on to become the first non Japanese to graduate from Gogen's elite College the Nihon Karatedo Senmon Gakko as a Shihan in 1973, and by 2008 was the longest serving non-Japanese representative of the IKGA, (45 years).

Alma Mater

Gogen studied Law at Kansei University where he was expelled for fighting during 1928 whereby he transferred to Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto where he was also enrolled in a Law program of study from 1929-1937.During his college days as a Law student Gogen Yamaguchi had established his first Karatedo Dojo at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. Soon the dojo became famous in the city, whereby the practitioners were known for their ultra hard training and fierce breathing exercises. In those days students of karatedo practiced only formal movements named kata and pre-arranged formal sparring exercises named yakusoku kumite, students could not have any individual matches between each other since they always fought with full contact and did not hold back their techniques. (It was during this period that Gogen Yamaguchi had created the first stages of the jiyu kumite free fighting, and established rules to decide the winner of a match. Some of the rules are still in use today in what is known as sport or competition karate).

Contributions to Budo

Gogen Yamaguchi's contributions to Goju Ryu karatedo and to karatedo in general have been enormous. Under his leadership and guidance the International Karate-do Goju-Kai Association (I.K.G.A) has developed and thrived. The organization has increased in popularity both in Japan and other Asian and Western countries throughout the world. By 2008 there were approximately 60-70 countries teaching the Goju-Kai karatedo principles and training methods. Gogen Yamaguchi succeeded in unifying all the karate schools in Japan into a single union which resulted in the formation of The Federation of All Japan Karate-do Organization (F.A.J.K.O.) in 1964. The Kokusai Budo Renmei - (The International Martial Arts Federation) in Japan, whose chairman was Prince Higashikuni of the Japanese Imperial Family appointed Master Yamaguchi as a Shihan - Master of that organisations Karatedo division. He added to the Goju system the Taikyoku Kata forms, - training methods for the beginner students to prepare them for the more advanced kata.

It has been argued that 'never before has a single man had such profound effect on the development and propagation of karate-do'. (De Jong, Ingo, (1989). Goju-Kai Karate-do Hard and Soft in Harmony - Volume 1. Sweden, Jakobsbergs Tryckeri AB. ) Master Gogen Yamaguchi 10th Dan was a man of intense dedication and determination can truly be called a karate legend.

Visits Australia

Gogen Yamaguchi did not usually travel to countries outside Asia however he left Japan to visit Sydney and Melbourne Australia on two occasions, 1970 & 1972. The visits were covered extensively in the press and on television at the time whereby Gogen's unusual presence and extraordinary martial arts abilities were widely published. The Australian Goju Kai members hold many precious memories of training in the presence of Gogen Yamaguchi at that time and many hundreds of Australian members took the opportunity to train with him then and again later at the Hombu Dojo in Suginami Ku in Tokyo prior to his death.

Family

Goju Kai practitioners throughout the world mourned the passing of Gogen Yamaguchi Kaiso in 1989. He had been married twice, firstly to Midori and secondly to Mitsue; and had five children: Gosei Norimi Yamaguchi; Gosen Kishio Yamaguchi; Makiko Yamaguchi; Goshi Hiroufumi Yamaguchi; (and Gokyoko Wakako Yamaguchi to his second wife). All of his children practiced Karate do and became Masters in their own right. The names commencing with GO were their Karate names. Gosei Norimi Yamaguchi has his own organisation in the United states of America and Goshi Hirofumi Yamaguchi is the President of the International Karate do Goju Kai, with branches in 60 countries. Gosen Kishio Yamaguchi an executive of Japan Airlines was arguably the most like his father in a technical sense, Kishio passed away in the early 1990's and was deeply involved in the running of the IKGA. Wakako Yamaguchi was an All Japan Kata Champion and like her brothers a dedicated and inspirational instructor. Makiko Yamaguchi died from cancer at a relatively young age in the 1980's.

Jonatz, a nickname used by Jonathan Campos Briones in the Internet and in his official website www.jonatz.tk.

Jonatz was born on May 13, 1983 at Naga City, Philippines. He took his elementary course at Concepcion Pequena Elementary School where he graduated Salutatorian. He then took his Secondary course at the Naga City Science High School and graduated in 2000. He received the Department of Science and Technology Scholarship grant and took BSE Physics and Technology at the Philippine Normal University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2004. In the same year he ranked second in the Licensure Examination for Teachers in Region Five.

Jonatz is currently in the Department of Education as a physics and chemistry teacher in Nsgs City and the President of the Naga City Science High School Alumni Association.

...And So It Goes was the "actual" debut full-lenght album by the North Carolina post-hardcore band Beloved (us). It was released independently and sold exclusively at thier concerts. While most people consider "The Running" to be their first album, this is actually thier first true release.

History

The original members of the Beloved were Joe Musten (drums/vocals), Shawn Dallas (guitar), Dusty Redmon (guitar) and John Brehm (bass guitar). They all attended East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, NC from 1996-2000.

Everyone in the band had a WIDE variety of influences... from Classic Rock to Hardcore/Metal, and Punk/Rockabilly to the now hated "EMO", they set out to redefine the local music scene. (which had dwindled some since the heday of the Swift and Codeseven scene)

What made Beloved so unique was thier ability to perfectly combine Emo/Indie (very up-and-coming at the time) and Hardcore.

Josh Moore actually did not appear on thier first demo cassete tape. Joe Musten used to play drums and do vocals. They asked Josh to join the band a few months later and proceeded to record a second demo tape. They had a sort of "release concert" at First Christian Church located in Kernersville, NC. The tape sold very well and they decided to record a full lenght including newly recorded versions of the 4 tracks that appeared on the demo tapes. The demo tapes included the songs

The long-awaited album was finally released in the summer of 2000. Jamie King (of Swift) recorded the album at his studio "The Basement" in King, NC.

There is a "bonus/goof" track at the end of the last track. (fast forward some ways into) It is rumored that John (their bassist) wrote the bulk of this little diddy. The only "vocals" on the hidden track are of the band members making strange noises into modulators with effects.

The album was released only once. Best guess, there were maybe 1000 copies ever made.

To many fans, THIS was their greatest release to date. In the months after it's release, Shawn Dallas was asked to leave the band and was replaced by Matt Harrison (a long-time friend of the other members). The band (and their sound) was never the same again (for better or worse).

Shawn Dallas went on to play in several bands after Beloved. Korea saw some success before disbanding and reforming as Monday In London; however, Shawn did not return. He relocated to High Point. His next musical endeavor came nearly 5 years after leaving Beloved. He joined a short-lived band with Drew Fulk, Michael Whitaker and Kyle Laster, called The Actor And The Son. They later reformed with a different drummer (Jordan McGee replacing Michael Whitaker) called Anadora. That too was short-lived, but made way for a bigger project, "Yosemite Mudflap And The Fireball Wizards". They released an album "Slaughter" on Tragic Hero Records in the summer of 2007. Shawn left the band shortly after to pursue other interests. He now resides in Kernersville. He works at Dell Computers and shares a clothing company cattered exclusively to the "drifting" scene called Driftstar Apparel with graphic designer Michael Whitaker. ( www.DriftstarApparel.com )

In the coming years after Shawn departed, John Brehm too was asked to leave the band (shortly after the original release of "The Running"). He was replaced by short-lived bassist Mitch Britt. Mitch left the band to pursue other interests and the band asked Johnny Smrdel to join. Brehm went on to play bass in the band Monday In London (now defunct) and toured for 3. He released a full lenght album and an e.p. with them. He then joined Dead Poetic (now defunct) and toured for 2 years. He released 1 full lenght album with them before the band abruptly disbanded in late 2006. He currently resides in Kernersville as a tattoo artist for Ink Well tattoos in Winston-Salem, NC. The Hie Electronics TeraStack Solution is deployed within its TBYTe units, each of which has eight internal TeraStack optical volumes that are removable, transportable and re-mountable. In the TBYTe 50 model, eight 6.25TB TeraStacks combine to provide a storage capacity of 50 terabytes in an application integrated server platform with a footprint the size of a small dorm refrigerator. Phil Harvey called the TeraStack Solution “Data’s Savior” in the May 2008 issue of D CEO Magazine. The chip multiprocessor server platform has 2 Opteron CPUs with two processing cores each. Video capture and alarm processing is accomplished with 12 TI DaVinci class Digital Signal Processors. Each TBYTe has the ability to handle data flows 24/7, from 64 cameras at 2CIF resolution and 32 Cameras at 4CIF or D1 resolution at 30 fps (frames per second.) The Hie Electronics system is scalable to add capacity up to the petabyte class, or 1,000 terabytes, and is able to handle the flow rates of the largest video camera systems while still in a small footprint. Unfortunately for consumers, the TBYTe is not in mass production at this time. The TBYTe is currently being manufactured only in McKinney, Texas, as Hie Electronics has not yet begun outsourcing production.

The TBYTe and its internal TeraStack system can be a standalone DVR (Digital Video Recorder) or a NAS (network attached system) linked to a DVR/NVR (Network Video Recorder). It is a highly flexible, open architecture system. This breakthrough flexibility is the result of the Hie Electronics patent pending middleware product which allows the TeraStack Solution to extend and automatically backup the storage filespace of any data generating application. The "pipe" that Hie Electronics can handle is well over the 50 megabytes per second attached to a GIGEthernet. The Hie Electronics TBYTe is so powerful that, fully operational, it only uses 9% to 15% of its CPUs processing power performing video acquisition and optical archiving. However, the TBYTe is not completely online storage, like a RAID array; therefore, the restoration of nearline archived data requires a slightly longer amount of time.

Coverage of Hie Electronics’ TeraStack Solution in the November/December 2007 issue of ASIS International Dynamics states, “…attendees would need a place to store the video data. That’s where TeraStack came into play.” The Hie Electronics integrated software in its TBYTe 50 units allows all 50 terabytes of data to be fully searchable with instant replay, motion detection, alarm monitoring, and "hot boxes"; and even provides for ad-hoc after the fact smart searches months after an incident. This search capability is possible even if the client had not set up any programmed targeted alerts or "events". The Hie Electronics smart search system, as embedded into its software, can do forensics immediately. As a result and instead of only having access to a few seconds of coverage directly associated with an alarm event, a security officer using the TeraStack Solution by Hie Electronics can quickly analyze a situation and take meaningful action. Frost and Sullivan named Hie Electronics’ TeraStack Solution the 2007 North American Video Surveillance Product Innovation of the Year.

For its core 50 terabyte system, Hie Electronics’ size and low power / cooling advantage is dramatic. The Hie Electronics system requires the minimal power of 800 watts and no special air-conditioning or raised floor. Hie Electronics’ long term archive advantage is a major differentiator, as the TeraStack Solution can store data with full forensics for decades, if needed. In addition to being a video surveillance solution, the TeraStack Solution can be used as an integrated extended data storage solution for any other large data requirement.
