Weird user

Hi Yamla, I haven't asked you to run a check in a while, so I figured you might miss it. :-) I came across Levi Kambai because of a complaint against them at WP:ANI (closed since I started researching the user). Their topic interests appear to be road signs (I doubt they are Jermboy27 - they've been around too long without being detected, including at Commons) and food userboxes - strange interests, but it takes all kinds, I guess. What grabbed my attention sock-wise is their creation of userpages for other users and editing of userpages (they created one userpage of a non-existent user). The two other users who I think are likely Levi Kambai are มองโกเลีย๔๔ and HaeKN based on the road sign topic. This is the article intersection of the three. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:20, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Pretty weird coincidence, if that's what it is. What is it with road signs and, for different users, tornados and hurricanes? I'll take a look. --Yamla (talk) 20:28, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/มองโกเลีย๔๔, highly  Unlikely (and not Jermboy). I'd have put money on one catch here, happy to see I was mistaken. --Yamla (talk) 21:03, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at it, and thanks for doing all the paperwork.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:32, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

ExclusiveEditor

Hi Yamla, I'm sure you're aware of the discussion at ANI about unblocking ExclusiveEditor. As I've made clear, I'm strongly opposed to it, but, unfortunately, if the consensus is to unblock them, there's nothing I can do about it (except stew a little - I'm good at stewing). Anyway, given the behavior at issue here, I just wanted to make sure that you or someone else has run a check of the user to make sure they have not been evading their block or socking in the time leading up to their block. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

I'll take a look. Thanks. --Yamla (talk) 13:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
There's ExclusiveEditor2 but that was a declared alt and hasn't been involved since ExclusiveEditor was blocked. Nothing else in the logs. Let me know if you think this information belongs at WP:ANI and I'll post there. --Yamla (talk) 14:01, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
I think it's fine, no one's mentioned it. If they do, you can chime in. Thank you for checking.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:31, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

CheckUser

Hello,

On the article Hatha yoga, there is an IP user and a newly created account which appear to be the same person making the same edits (removing content with no explanation). I'm wondering if you could take a look at that and what would be my next steps?

Thanks,

Revdel on Favonian's talk page?

Hi, Yamla. The BKFIP that you blocked today for 6 months had also posted that same message on Favonian's talk page with the 1,436 bytes. Can you revdel those revisions in the revision history? I assume Favonian is busy right now and can't do it himself. Thanks. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 17:20, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

GauMutra

I have trouble with those two masters. I usually get the socking right but not always the master. Thanks for fixing.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:55, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

No problem at all. I often wonder if we actually have fewer sockmasters than we think. Good catch on this one. --Yamla (talk) 18:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

SPI

Hi Yamla. Is there any chance that this SPI could be looked at-[1]. The disruption caused by this sock-master is off the charts, and includes brazen vote stacking in AFDs and creating poorly sourced POV pushing articles that promote religious heroism. 2 admins have expressed concerns that the first account, Historian2325, is a SPA-[2]; both accounts aren't even trying to hide their links to the sock-master and are openly trying to see how far they can take their DUCK edits. You also dealt with one of the SPAs before-[3] where he promised you that he would never block evade again, and then subsequently went on to create dozens of more SPAs. Southasianhistorian8 (talk) 18:08, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

I'll try to take a look later today. The problem is, these are extremely time-consuming given the specific nature of the IP address(es) involved. Any idea if there's perhaps a set of 10 - 50 articles we could just protect instead? I'm wondering if that might be a better approach. --Yamla (talk) 18:18, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Yamla, I'm not looking for any action against the IPs, it's just that this sockmaster extensively uses proxies to block evade, so I thought that listing some of the ones I've come across may help CUs establish a connection or CU findings might reveal that the sockmaster was operating with these proxies. But just to be clear, I'm only asking CUs to look at the 2 accounts, not the IPs. Would it be easier if I removed the IPs from the socklist? Southasianhistorian8 (talk) 18:25, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
I removed the IPs. Southasianhistorian8 (talk) 18:29, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Nauman335

Thanks for the work here as always. I see you closed it but was hoping we could open so it can be evaluated for a behavior block. I think the evidence presented shows they are related and that the main SOCK understands not to use the same IP to avoid a CU. CNMall41 (talk) 18:12, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Absolutely. Done. --Yamla (talk) 18:17, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
You are awesome. This is one we knew likely would come down to behavioral evidence. Thanks again. --CNMall41 (talk) 06:07, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Haploidavey block

The block lifted for a short while, then was re-imposed. This is why I didn't remove the notice. I'm able to edit when I turn off my VPN, but that leaves me vulnerable. Haploidavey (talk) 10:50, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Yes, you need to disable your VPN if you wish to edit here. If you have a compelling need to use a VPN, WP:IPBE may be available to you. Note, though, that simply a desire to hide your IP address is not enough to be granted IPBE. --Yamla (talk) 11:22, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
Ha! It might not come to that. You helped me out on a prevous occasion (see my talk, halfway up); I disabled my VPN and the block was cleared a few hours later. I turned the VPN back on, and it has stayed that way, fully protective, for a year or two. Here's hoping for more of the same.Haploidavey (talk) 12:03, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for taking the measures you did, although I am still wondering: Why was I being pinged? I cannot see what I had to do with the block. Maybe a registered user thinking I'll know exactly what they're talking about? Or someone whose unblock I declined at UTRS, maybe ... Daniel Case (talk) 17:48, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

If you take a look at some of the specific blocks such as this one, you can see you are the blocking admin on a /40 range. Pretty sure that's why you are being tagged. I want to strongly emphasize that the next bit is not based on CU data. This could be BuickCenturyDriver. It's certainly one LTA or another. Hi there.

I found an IP user who immediately resorted to personal attacks in Talk:Yasuke, to where/who can I report it?

Block evasion

Hi Yamla, almost a week ago you banned User:The Penfield Homunculus for repeated block evasion. A new sock has turned up and edited e.g., the FC Barcelona article today, which definitely belongs to that user (same manner of writing, restores the previous version of the article). What do you think, is a further increase in protection level of the FC Barcelona article an idea (since the sockmaster keeps coming back there), or is it a bit extreme? Thanks, Eem dik doun in toene (talk) 07:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Which account are you referring to? Déu-n'hi-do for example was registered on 2024-05-05 so possibly isn't part of the same set of socks. --Yamla (talk) 10:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I'm referring to "Déu-n'hi-do" (sorry, should have been clearer there). I'm 100% certain that that account belongs to The Penfield Homunculus. They have the same style of edit summaries/writing, the same interests (FC Barcelona/Catalonia) and at the FC Barcelona page "Déu-n'hi-do" restored the version of the sockmaster (odd behaviour). Going by the history of the FC Barcelona page, it is clear to me that "The Penfield Homunculus" has often had multiple accounts at the same time; Pròssia was used from 11 to 28 April, but during that time there was also an account called ONLY-BARCELONA from 21 April to 1 May, followed by A Crocodile in Bed from 1 to 5 May, an account from 2 May and "Blow.ofmind78" from 13 to 16 May. The sockmaster (and thus "Déu-n'hi-do") seems to understand that by making small edits, one can easily rack up the amount needed to edit such pages. It wouldn't surprise me if there is another sock of him already out there, which will have at least ten edits in three weeks, starting this process all over again. Eem dik doun in toene (talk) 11:38, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Please file an WP:SPI and I'll take a look. If the account matches, I strongly agree it's time for article protection. --Yamla (talk) 12:00, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Yamla, I've re-opened the investigation here: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/The Penfield Homunculus. Eem dik doun in toene (talk) 12:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again, Yamla. This message, however, and this user trying to boss my talk page, throwing his toys out of the pram (although they claim "to be neutral"), is just a bit annoying... Eem dik doun in toene (talk) 13:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Stop accusing others to be a sock. You are reverting in FC Barcelona page a lot of contents with the reason: sock. I don't know if Deu-nido its a sock but you are vandalizing wikipedia. Mucchia (talk) 13:37, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

SophieHadifz promotional tone editing: block evasion?

I noticed that you indefinitely blocked SophieHadifz on April 29th 2024 for 'Using Wikipedia for promotion or advertising purposes'. I have been attempting to make good faith improvements to a page that this user created Craig Considine that was(/is?) highly promotional in tone, and I continue to have to address edits by unregistered IP users that are repeatedly inserting promotion/advertising into the article. Quite honestly, I am unconvinced by this article's notability and am considering submitting to AfD. I am uncertain whether this is the article's subject or SophieHadifz, but either way the results are the same. I wanted to call this to your attention because it may be block evasion from an account that you blocked. Please could you advise how to move forwards with this? For now, I have requested protection on the article. Thank you! Boredintheevening (talk) 10:24, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Favonian thankfully added protection to that page so hopefully this properly tackles the inappropriately promotional editing. --Yamla (talk) 11:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

I am curious, two edits on AfDs for a new user, is this not suggestive of a possible sock? Should it be checked out? Regards Govvy (talk) 10:34, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

There's not much to go on there yet. It certainly is unusual for a new editor to find their way to AfDs, though. --Yamla (talk) 11:24, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

LB&SCR E2

Thanks for blocking him. Funnily enough, I'm pretty sure he is being truthful that he's not related to Aecws. I'm fairly confident he's actually the community-banned Australian railroad IP (which matches his insistence that he's from Australia). In any case, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/LB&SCR E2 can be closed now, it's currently still open (I imagine you blocked the account independently of the SPI). Trainsandotherthings (talk) 15:05, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Oops, I saw you just reviewed the unblock, and Bbb23 did the initial block. I checked his contributions on the locomotive fandom wiki and they directly match creations by the Australian railroad IP so I'm now fully confident that's who we're dealing with here. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 15:12, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
While I cannot comment on CU findings (and you aren't asking me to), this does indeed track. They've self-disclosed they are editing from Australia and based on behaviour, this sounds like a close match to that. Thanks! --Yamla (talk) 15:39, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Bbb23 closed the SPI, so we're all done for now. I doubt we've seen the last of him, but I'll keep my eyes open. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 16:18, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

About block evasion by User:Vishal Kandassamy

Hi. I saw that you declined an unblock request at User talk:117.252.145.54 (part of the recently blocked IP range Special:Contributions/117.252.144.0/20 and I agree with the decline. From the history of that talk page, Special:Contributions/59.93.10.170 made that unblock request strongly suggesting User:Vishal Kandassamy is probably using that IP to evade their original block as well. Can you please look into this? Thank you. ~ SG5536B (talk) 15:28, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

I've replied that one. Thanks. -Lemonaka 00:50, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I wonder...

Given the IP range overlap(s), the undiscussed page moves and redirect creations, and the wiktionary edits, I wonder if Par âpre aux astres is Eastern but not so Middle/Wahakadha mustakhdim. With the sock you uncovered it doesn't matter much, but the overlap is interesting.-- Ponyobons mots 19:35, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I don't have the IP ranges in front of me right now. The timing on that account certainly makes this a possibility and this account made a significant number of low-quality edits to get their edit count up. --Yamla (talk) 20:06, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
I didn't run a check myself, I just peeked at the ranges you ran on the Par âpre account and looked at the logs for previous checks on those ranges. That's where Wahakadha popped up. If it is them, they seemed to have become fed up with trying to game EC to edit PIA topics and are now just outright trolling. -- Ponyobons mots 20:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Editor experience invitation

Hi Yamla :) I'm looking for experienced editors to interview here. Feel free to pass if you're not interested. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 17:23, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Tomasz1123

Hello. Does this and this look like another sock of Tomasz1123 to you? Want me to file an SPI? Thanks. Wikishovel (talk) 22:21, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

Hard to see how that could be considered constructive. I'm not immediately convinced they are Tomasz1123, but it's definitely worth an SPI. --Yamla (talk) 22:23, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
No it's not because of a different name not with Tomasz prefix and creating non-disruptive edits Ritchie7473 (talk) 23:22, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
And because of different iP address Ritchie7473 (talk) 23:23, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Bbb23. Pretty straight-forward once they admit it here. --Yamla (talk) 09:41, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I saw that you rejected this user's appeal. I'd recommend revoking talk page access, given that they are using it to make trolling editing requests to pages. Thank you. JeffSpaceman (talk) 10:01, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Already done by another admin. --Yamla (talk) 18:44, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

IP 8

If you feel I went too far, feel free to restore Talk access. That was just already ridiculous with the joe job on IP5 (who was socking) and it was clear they just wanted to toy with us and weren't going to stop. Will be offline for a few hours, sorry to leave you with the mess. Star Mississippi 22:51, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

No problem, I think that was a good move on your part. --Yamla (talk) 09:53, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

I saw the email but it didn't click that this was the person involved. Interesting. Well, time for some splunking! --Yamla (talk) 19:23, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

The weirdest hoax on the internet

I rather enjoyed this video about the Alan MacMasters hoax. An amusing ten minute video on circular reporting. --Yamla (talk) 10:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi Yamla, ever heard of this genre before? Until today, I hadn't. NLDC, which was created by KitDaCatsun, was tagged for deletion, and I deleted it. Looking at Kit's other edits, they appear to be a one-topic editor, all related to Dubstep. I then tagged two articles they created, one as an A7 and the other as a G11. They have vigorously contested the deletion and the tags, both on the talk pages of the articles, and at my Talk page. Acroterion has very considerately been responding to them on my Talk page, saving me the trouble of doing so (and also doing it more ably than I think I would have). A brand new user, FlyingFish747, came out of nowhere and their sole edit was to remove the speedy deletion tag at Big Apple Records. That article is not something that would attract many people; it has only 5 page watchers, of which one is me. Are Kit and FF747 the same person? Meat? Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Everything I know about dubstep, I learned from this video by Ylvis, he of The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) fame. :) I'll take a look and see what I can find. --Yamla (talk) 18:04, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
I'm stunned, Red X Unrelated. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/KitDaCatsun. --Yamla (talk) 20:46, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
I agree with you that it's probably meat. I haven't decided whether to block. Thanks for checking and doing the paperwork.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
But the most important question, did you watch the video? :) --Yamla (talk) 20:55, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
Ha! I confess I hadn't, but I just did before writing this comment. Not exactly my cup of tea (opera and classical music). It was a bit like a horror show (probably satiric, but it was jarring to the senses), interpolated with sweet voices coming from pretty people. I still have no idea what dubstep is. :-( Back to the less important stuff: I blocked Kit for two weeks and FF747 indefinitely for meat puppetry.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:15, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
My day is complete. :) --Yamla (talk) 21:18, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
Oops, I was unaware of the larger picture here when I declined the speedy on Big Apple Records. I still don't think it's a G 11 but if you think I missed something bigger, feel free to reinstate it @Bbb23. Star Mississippi 02:15, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

Jasper

Just seeing this when I went to respond to thread above. Glad you're safe. Not active on COIN to know the nuances, but also think you'd be fine to edit. Star Mississippi 02:13, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. It was scary! I'm almost certain I'm free of conflict and, obviously, understand WP:NOR. But, wanting to be sure. Thanks for your opinion on that. --Yamla (talk) 10:18, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

Suspected non disclosed alt account

Hi I am have some concerns with a group of editors acting in a predatory manner with sweeping edits after some probing two have admitted to Knowing each other of the platform. It is Buddhist pages Linji and the platform sutra and others. The accounts are user Likes Thai food and user Javier F.V. I have left my concerns on experienced editors talk page user Joshua Jonathan under the section Alt Account. And on the talk page of Linji It seem that this user is involved in some way also. To what extent I do not know. If you could help that would be greatly appreciated. Foristslow (talk) 21:34, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

Knowing each other does not necessarily mean they are violating WP:MEAT. If you have evidence that the connection is close enough to be abusive, WP:SPI is the place to file that evidence. The Editor Interaction Analyser may also be helpful. At the moment, though, I don't think you yet have a compelling case. Then again, the editor overlap is almost complete. --Yamla (talk) 21:40, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello and thankyou for your reply, Can you please explain what a editor overlap is, What brought this to my attention was the fact that the new user Likes Thai food was and is making very large and what seems experienced edits, and reverting others with confidence. My suspension were confirmed when the other user Javier F.V. admitted to asking them to come on to the platform, they are editing and creating consensus on topic. Thank you again Foristslow (talk) 22:28, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
Nothing you are describing is grounds for a block as it's not anywhere near conclusive grounds to indicate abuse. Please check out the Editor Interaction Analyzer I linked you to above. --Yamla (talk) 22:32, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
Thankyou for your reply, just again please, what does, "Then again, the editor overlap is almost complete". Reference to. Foristslow (talk) 23:17, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
"the editor overlap is almost complete" is in reference to the Editor Interaction Analyzer. --Yamla (talk) 23:34, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
For some reason I can't get it working I am just learning. Foristslow (talk) 00:15, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
They are reverting my edits and saying that I am not referencing them correctly, when they are iring references and changing key words in translation, some of what they are doing can in my opinion be called a kind of historical negationism. Foristslow (talk) 00:26, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
The right place to discuss this is the article talk pages, not here. If the consensus is against your changes (nobody else supports your position), that means you should not make them. If you are unable to obtain consensus (that is, other editors specifically support your position while others oppose it), WP:3O may be an option. --Yamla (talk) 11:30, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Thankyou for your time Foristslow (talk) 11:45, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi Yamla, why did you semi-protect the Talk page for 24 hours rather than just revoke TPA?--Bbb23 (talk) 13:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

I'm a rampant optimist. I'm hoping once they calm down a little, they'll knock off the vandalism and make a real unblock request. I did not take into account the global lock for long-term abuse, mind you. I think that happened about two minutes before I changed protection, which probably means I didn't see the lock. I think my optimism is misplaced here. --Yamla (talk) 13:40, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Haha. If it makes you feel any better (not that you should feel bad), I didn't notice the global lock, either. :-) What's it like being a "rampant optimist"? I'm not even an optimist, let alone a rampant one.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:29, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Rather trying at times, I must say. :) --Yamla (talk) 17:31, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Yes. See WP:FAIRUSE. You can't just use it on any other article. --Yamla (talk) 09:57, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
