Use of Wikipedia user pages

Wikipedia user pages are provided for users to make use of in connection with their work in editing Wikipedia. Wikipedia offers wide latitude to users to manage their user space as they see fit. However, pages in user space still do belong to the community, and these pages are not provided for any purpose users may choose. Information on what is and what is not permitted may be found in the project page on user pages, and in addition all use of Wikipedia is governed by the policy on What Wikipedia is not. I should particularly like to draw attention to the section on Wikipedia not being an advertising service.

The project page about user pages says, among other things: Generally, you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal website. Your user page is about you as a Wikipedian, and pages in your user space should be used as part of your efforts to contribute to the project. To clarify this, a list of "examples of unrelated content" is given which includes Advertising or promotion of a business or organization unrelated to Wikipedia (such as purely commercial sites or referral links).

It is also important to understand the copyright position: material copied and pasted from commercial websites is almost always unacceptable for copyright reasons.

Tayloredway's user page has been substantially filled with commercial promotional material most if not all of which has been copied from commercial websites. In light of the information above you will understand that this material has to be removed. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:54, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your addition to Saint Kitts has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other websites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of article content such as sentences or images. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:29, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
