@Squirrel14th: In the Neonicotinoid article, I noticed that you used an external link in place of a regular footnote / citation. According to WP:ELPOINTS, With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article. and This [external link] guideline does not apply to inline citations or general references, which should appear in the "References" or "Notes" section. I changed your external link into a footnote citation. This is what the Wikitext markup code looks like:

  • <ref name="Sánchez-Bayo Goulson Pennacchio Nazzi 2016 pp. 7–11">{{cite journal | last=Sánchez-Bayo | first=Francisco | last2=Goulson | first2=Dave | last3=Pennacchio | first3=Francesco | last4=Nazzi | first4=Francesco | last5=Goka | first5=Koichi | last6=Desneux | first6=Nicolas | title=Are bee diseases linked to pesticides? — A brief review | journal=Environment International | publisher=Elsevier BV | volume=89-90 | year=2016 | issn=0160-4120 | doi=10.1016/j.envint.2016.01.009 | pages=7–11}}</ref>

Here is what the citation in the reference section looks like:

  • Sánchez-Bayo, Francisco; Goulson, Dave; Pennacchio, Francesco; Nazzi, Francesco; Goka, Koichi; Desneux, Nicolas (2016). "Are bee diseases linked to pesticides? — A brief review". Environment International. 89–90. Elsevier BV: 7–11. doi:10.1016/j.envint.2016.01.009. ISSN 0160-4120.

The best way to achieve this is to use footnotes and citations. You can find relevant pages for inserting footnotes with citations into Wikitext at:

There is also a tool for generating a footnote as a named reference or a full citation with a shortened footnote at

You can also add references using Visual Editor. You can find instructions for that in the Editing references section in the Visual Editor user guide on Mediawiki.

I know that this may be a lot of information in response to an external link, but I do think it is important to be able to do good references. My very first edit on Wikipedia put citations in the wrong format, and a helpful editor put me straight. I would like to think that I am passing the favor forward.
