Welcome!

Hello, Rsrour, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Notification of special editing rules relating to abortion

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in abortion. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Because you have shown interest in a highly controversial area of Wikipedia, please carefully ensure that you are following all editing rules. Reach out to Shalor (Wiki Ed) or your instructor if you run into any problems. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:02, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Honestly, this may not be the best place to learn how Wikipedia works. The abortion article especially is the result of careful negotiation over a period of years between deeply-entrenched opposing camps. Guy (help!) 18:22, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding citation needed tags

To correctly add a citation needed tag, please go into edit mode, click "insert" on the top toolbar, select "template" and then type citation needed. Please add "citation needed" tags this way in the future. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:48, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Editing article

Please stop editing the abortion article - there are some issues in play here that I'll go into later but I wanted to let you know about this now. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:52, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Basically what's going on right now is that while you said you were just going to be copyediting, what you're doing is going beyond light copyediting since you're actively moving things around, deleting content, and changing up how some things are written. Light copyediting is meant to be just fixing grammatical errors and the like. Any time you make major changes on such a controversial topic, you must discuss the changes first on the talk page. It's generally a good thing to do in general, to be honest.
The edits also had issues with tone, as it takes a specific viewpoint towards the topic of abortion. You also use the terms pro-life and pro-abortion, which have been deemed inaccurate and marketing terms on Wikipedia. This last part is something that you couldn't have known, but this is a good example of why it's so important to post on the talk page first when it comes to controversial topics.
Another issue was accuracy, as my colleague pointed out that states didn't limit abortion access by deeming them "non-essential businesses" but rather as "non-emergency medical procedures".
There are other issues, which are discussed on the article's talk page. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:17, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You were asked, repeatedly, to stop editing the abortion in the United States article, and to discuss the changes you wanted to make. Please understand that this sort of behaviour is disruptive and consumes the time and energy of your fellow Wikipedians. This is not appropriate. Guettarda (talk) 19:20, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize this was my first time editing an article and I forgot to discuss my intentions on the talk page first. I was not aiming to make any harmful edits and I take responsibility for not checking in with the talk page. Rsrour (talk) 19:40, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rsrour, yes, we know. But you made a truly terrible choice of article. Please select another, OK? Guy (help!) 19:46, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How about Robert Hooke (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). I have rare books on him and can advise on specifics if you have questions. Guy (help!) 19:47, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you Guy for the good suggestion! Rsrour, if you do decide to proceed with the abortion article, here's what will need to be done: only work in your sandbox. I will look at the content and if there are no visible issues you can post them to the article's talk page, where it can be discussed. If the content is good, another editor can work it into the article. I will say that the Hooke article will be the easier one to edit of the two. I can also recommend some topics that are more women's studies specific that would be good to edit. Also keep in mind that you won't be graded on what "sticks", rather the effort you've put into the work thus far. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:01, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
