Hi, Peter. In regards your Draft:Van Cotthem family name history, three things:

  1. It is a really bad idea to write about things you are closely connected to, such as your family. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia requires everything in it to directly verifiable to reliable published sources. It is hard to seperate what you know from personal experience from what you've found in reliable sources. Although it is not forbidden, original research is. See WP:COI for further details.
  2. Specifically, Wikipedia is not a genealogy site. That having been said, we do have some articles on highly notable families. Think Vanderbilt or Kennedy.
  3. In order for any article to be published in the encyclopedia, notability has to be shown. Has your family (as opposed to individuals in your family) been the subject of multiple discussions in detail in reliable sources? If not, you do not have the basis for an article.

Your intro sounded somewhat vague. Again, Wikipedia is not the place to collect and share your genealogy research. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 14:56, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
