How does adding a new section in an article work?

This help request has been answered. If you need more help, please place a new {{help me}} request on this page followed by your questions, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page.

I'm very new to editing on Wikipedia but would love to help working on the topic 'Coffee' as I have been working in this industry for a long time. The article about 'Latte Art' could need a new section on latte art on the internet and in social media. The latte art community online is growing significantly. There are websites like baristajam.com and ratemyrosetta.com that deserve some credit. These are platforms where baristas from around the world are sharing their latte art with each other. And because I know the founder of baristajam.com I would like to help him spread the word about his open source project which I believe is of great value to the latte art community. I appreciate any help with this. --Peaberrydesign (talk) 12:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I hope the links above will give you a good start. You may also find the WP:Tutorial helpful. Two words of caution:

  • Your username: Wikipedia accounts must be for individuals only, who are personally responsible for them, and usernames which are names of groups or companies are not allowed. I see that there is at least one organization called Peaberry Designs; if you are associated with that, you should choose a different username. Even if you are not, it might be better to choose a different username to avoid possible misunderstandings. Requesting a change of username is easy - click on WP:Changing username, read to the bottom of that page, click on "Simple" and follow the instructions. Your username can be related to your real name, or not, as you like - see WP:REALNAME for some considerations.
  • You say: "because I know the founder of baristajam.com I would like to help him spread the word... " You need to be careful here. Wikipedia is very resistant to being used for any kind of promotion, even of non-commercial or "good causes", and before editing about your friend's project you should read the guideline on WP:Conflict of interest.

I am sorry if this seems to start on a negative note, but it is best to warn in advance of possible problems. The general way Wikipedia operates is described at WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle - if you see a change you think would improve the encyclopedia, be BOLD and make it; but if your change is reverted, don't make it again but discuss it on the article talk page and try to reach WP:Consensus with other users.

Please leave a message here or on my talk page if you need any more advice. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 13:07, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
