Hi - I have just made a small change (with cited reference) to an amendment that you made to the "Dubats" article. According to Italian sources there were no native officers in this force, although some of the NCOs were locally recruited - as in the photo that you have identified as being Invasion of Ethiopia vintage. You are right about the khaki uniform but this was introduced for service on the eve of the 1936 war with Ethiopia. Prior to that date the white native clothing shown in the photograph was worn for all purposes and that is the popular image (at least in Italy) of the Dubats. Photographs of dubats on parade in Rome in 1938 show that the white traditional dress was retained for at least ceremonial wear until WWII. I propose to restore that section accordingly. We seem to be talking at cross purposes over the word "officers". These were not the rank and file Somali personnel but Italian commissioned officers mostly seconded from the regular Arab-Somali battalions of the Royal Corps of Colonial Troops. Remember that the dubats were a para-military colonial force and not civilian police officers in a modern sense. When I wrote the original "Dubat" article five years ago I thought the above details worth including and I will restore them now unless you have some specific reasons justifying exclusion. I can give references to the white traditional dress being worn prior to 1935 from detailed histories of the uniforms of Somali units in the RCTC - these are from authoritative Italian books published in the 1980s and 90s but available in English speaking countries. I believe that citing them is acceptable under current Wiki practice where no English language equivalents exist. One of these is the Piero Crociani reference which already appears in the existing text. There are many photographs available (including the one in the article) which show dubats in the white toga-like fute and turban. The photograph to which you provided a link is that of a Somali NCO during the final period of their existence (1935-40). When I wrote the original article I tried to cover the entire history of the Dubats from their formation in the 1920s and this included the secondary but well documented fact that they wore white indigenous based clothing until about 1935 and then (for obvious reasons) moved to a form of khaki service dress when facing a major war in Ethiopia.

I am trying to find my original source for detailing the secondment of Italian commissioned officers to dubat units from the regular Arab-Somali battalions but it was five years ago when I wrote it. If I cannot track it then I am willing to leave this out - though I do not think the article will be improved by doing so. I am afraid that I still cannot understand your position on describing dubats as "officers" - they comprised Somali soldiers and NCOs, with Italian officers. The dubat ranks Capi Commandanti, Capo and Sottocapi equated to sergeant, corporal and lance corporal. Outside Libya, the Italian colonial army of the 1920s and 30s did not promote indigenous troops to commissioned officer rank.

Since I imagine that neither of us wish to slide into a 3RR situation, I will not make any further edits to the article for a day or so. Regards Buistr (talk) 22:29, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Understood. However, the pic as it turns out isn't actually of a Somali dubat, but rather of an Eritrean cavalryman [2]. At any rate, you may be right about the martial ranks, but the passage was phrased awkwardly since dubats are normally only associated with local soldiers. Midday, I noticed you did an edit on Dorra. (I spent a year in Djibouti, thus several DJ articles on are my watchlist.) But I think you did it manually. May I suggest using Wikipedia:AutoEd. It does exactly what you did with an easy click. I just installed it and I think it is a worthwhile tool. I am offering you a heads-up that the article on Dahabshiil, an article you worked on, has been nominated for deletion -- and to ask you a question.

The key justification for the nomination for deletion is that a UK public relations firm was caught bragging about cleansing the web of suggestions Dahabshiil had ties to terrorism. The nomination states "Almost every substantive edit since not long after this article was created has been made by employees of a PR firm".

Your contribution history shows contributions over a wide and varied range of articles -- typical of a good faith volunteer. Nevertheless, could you confirm you are not an employee or contractor working for a PR firm?

Hi Geo Swan. I am aware of the messy situation over at the Dahabshiil article as I have the page watchlisted, like many other Africa-related articles (I'm one of the main WikiProject Africa contributors). The Bell Pottinger employee referred to in that passage is one User:Biggleswiki, who is identified as such in this TBI piece, among others. I have had a few encounters with this user on the page, and in fact, pointed out to him a while back that Dahabshiil was under duress for having allegedly hired online hands. I am the editor who is described in that TBI piece as having "complained about the edits being unduly positive" following Biggleswiki's initial changes and who Biggleswiki then responded to that he was "trying to expand this article with plain, referenced facts about Dahabshiil (I can easily change any references that you’re uneasy with). Your sole agenda seems to be to add a ‘Controversy’ section filled with as yet unproved allegations’." For the record, I think the page can perhaps be salvaged given Dahabshiil's position as one of the larger money transfer companies i.e. a baby & bathwater situation. Hi. I'm writing you as you seem to be one of the few non-inactive and non-semi-active participants in WikiProject Yemen. Judging from this map, the Kenya projection displays the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border correctly, while the Chad, DR Congo, CAR, Cameroon and Tanzania projections do not. Do you by any chance know if this is true? I observed that some maps lacked the Eritrea-Ethiopia border and was going to request their corrections when I noticed there were flaws with the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border too. --Theurgist (talk) 02:12, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Your assessment seems accurate. The Kenya projection does appear to be the closest match to the linked CIA map, which is the standard with regard to Yemen's borders. Regarding edits such as this one, can you please explain what you mean when you say that "Africa topic navbar is not on music"? A brief glance at the navbar shows that it covers "Music of Africa", as its title clearly states. ClaretAsh 20:17, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. "Africa topic navbar" was an allusion to the Africa topics template linked to here and here. That template is indeed not on music, but on general countries in Africa. Except for one link to the Music of Africa page at the top, those are the articles that the template actually links to, not the music pages (mouse over them). I think there may be a little confusion here. {{Africa topic}} is a flexible template (meta-template?) on which a variety of templates can be based. See Template:Africa topic#Usage for further info about how such templates are used and Template:Africa topic#See also for examples of related templates. Incidentally, I don't understand the sentence you wrote above (the one beginning, "Except for one link..."). The navbar shown here clearly links to "Music of..." articles for all countries of Africa (except for those redlinked, of course). Consequently, separate templates such as {{Horn African music}} are redundant.

I'll also point out that both your own template, {{Horn African music}}, as well as the standard version, {{Africa topic} (or, to use the specific parameter, {{Africa topic|Music of}}), are equally about (and not about) music for the same reason. Both templates merely list the "Music of..." articles for a given region, saying nothing further about music and musical culture. Regarding my reference to "Africa topic" here, I referred to {{Africa topic}} as I wasn't sure whether the CSD tag (or Twinkle, for that matter) would be able to handle the full (and correct) version, {{Africa topic|Music of}}.

Nonetheless, you may be right about CSD not being the way to deal with these templates. Therefore, I'll send them to TfD instead and let the community decide how to proceed.

TfD indeed would have been a better option from the start since this is clearly not the stuff of speedy deletion. The fact remains that the Africa topic template that is linked to is on countries, not on music. It's actually the Horn and North African music templates that exclusively contain music-related links. The only music-related link that the Africa topic template contains is a link to the Music of Africa main page at the top. The rest of its many links are all to irrelevant country articles, not to the relevant music articles (c.f. here; mouse over the links in the template). Hi, it seems that you have missed out on knowing how to handle the AFC submissions. The idea is that if the topic is suitable you move the AFC page to the article page, and then clean it up. A redirect should be left so that the original contributor can find their article. Normally a history merge is not required, because you would be working on the moved article. Also AFC contributions are not in aricle space so that are not eligible to be deleted under A10. Normally they are not deleted at all unless there is a legal problem such as attack, or copyright violation. If the topic already existed then decline the contribution with the "exists" key word. When I was listing the duplicate draft for deletion, a wiki message indicated that it wasn't an article and as such had to be listed on Mfd. So I listed it there. A move then clean-up may have been a better chronology, but at least the wiki community has a tidier page now. Same steps, different order. Thanks for the procedural info, though. That edit on imam ahmed is no doubt common even perhaps on the history of edits on the article because hararis claim imam ahmed as one of their own. Per WP:HA#NOT, having a look at another user's contributions is not stalking; the contribution logs exist in the first place for editorial and behavioral oversight. It is unreasonable to think that one can go around misrepresenting disputes with and the edits of others to third parties with no input from the accused party.
