April 2012

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Muhammad Hamidullah has been reverted.
Your edit here to Muhammad Hamidullah was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://ayazabdal.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/dr-muhammad-hamidullah/) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 12:13, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copying content to Wikipedia

Hello Marasheed, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here. This relates to the addition of text to Muhammad Hamidullah in early April of last year, which was reverted by the bot for reasons explained in the last section.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 10:52, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your unblock request to the bottom of the talk page in order to keep your requests organised. Before an admin can unblock you, they need to be confident that you understand Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, understand what you did wrong, and determine that you will not repeat the same mistakes. With this in mind, please answer these questions below:

  1. What is a reliable source? (WP:RS has info)
  2. How does Wikipedia use reliable sources to verify information? (WP:CITE has more information)
  3. What does an article need to have in order to be considered notable on Wikipedia? (WP:N and WP:GNG has more info)
  4. If unblocked, what you do intend to edit on Wikipedia?

I look forward to your answers. Z1720 (talk) 21:40, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

What is a reliable source? (WP:RS has info) Reliable sources may be published materials with a reliable publication process, authors who are regarded as authoritative in relation to the subject, or both. A cited source on Wikipedia is often a specific portion of text (such as a short article or a page in a book). But when editors discuss sources (for example, to debate their appropriateness or reliability) the word source has four related meanings: The work itself (the article, book: "That book looks like a useful source for this article.") and works like it ("An obituary can be a useful biographical source", "A recent source is better than an old one") The creator of the work (the writer, journalist: "What do we know about that source's reputation?") and people like them ("A medical researcher is a better source than a journalist for.."). The publication (for example, the newspaper, journal, magazine: "That source covers the arts.") and publications like them ("A newspaper is not a reliable source for medical facts"). The publisher of the work (for example, Cambridge University Press: "That source publishes reference works.") and publishers like them ("An academic publisher is a good source of reference works"). How does Wikipedia use reliable sources to verify information? (WP:CITE has more information) Wikipedia's verifiability policy requires inline citations for any material challenged or likely to be challenged, and for all quotations, anywhere in article space. A citation or reference in an article usually has two parts. In the first part, each section of text that is either based on, or quoted from, an outside source is marked as such with an inline citation. This is usually displayed as a superscript footnote number: [1] The second necessary part of the citation or reference is the list of full references, which provides complete, formatted detail about the source, so that anyone reading the article can find it and verify it. In particular, sources are needed for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged. If reliable sources cannot be found for challenged material, it is likely to be removed from the article. Sources are also required when quoting someone, with or without quotation marks, or closely paraphrasing a source. But the need to cite sources is not limited to those situations: editors are always encouraged to add or improve citations for any information in an article. What does an article need to have in order to be considered notable on Wikipedia? (WP:N and WP:GNG has more info) Information on Wikipedia must be verifiable; if no reliable, independent sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article. Wikipedia's concept of notability applies this basic standard to avoid indiscriminate inclusion of topics. Article and list topics must be notable, or "worthy of notice". Determining notability does not necessarily depend on things such as fame, importance, or popularity—although those may enhance the acceptability of a subject that meets the guidelines explained below. A topic is presumed to merit an article if: It meets either the general notability guideline (GNG) below, or the criteria outlined in a subject-specific notability guideline (SNG) listed in the box on the right; and It is not excluded under the What Wikipedia is not policy. General notability guideline A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. The subject-specific notability guidelines generally include verifiable criteria about a topic which show that appropriate sourcing likely exists for that topic. Therefore, topics which pass an SNG are presumed to merit an article, though articles which pass an SNG or the GNG may still be deleted or merged into another article, especially if adequate sourcing or significant coverage cannot be found, or if the topic is not suitable for an encyclopedia. If unblocked, what you do intend to edit on Wikipedia? Earlier I have done changes for the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Muhajir_people. They were reverted by the Citation bot. I'll resolve and add that information. (The changes needs to rollback) Marasheed (talk) 17:15, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I am declining an unblock because the user copy and pasted the information from the various pages instead of putting it in their own words. This creates two problems: copyright concerns (copying and pasting large amounts of information without summarising or quoting) and does not demonstrate an understanding of Wikipedia policy. I am also concerned that the user wants to edit List of Muhajir people, as mass stub creation caused this user to be blocked and I'm scared that the user will end up creating more articles to add to this list, causing them to be blocked again. Future unblock requests should demonstrate that the user understands when an article is notable and how to demonstrate notability in the creation of an article. Request reason:

1. What is a reliable source? (WP:RS has info)
A Reliable Source is published material that is used as a reference and following properties.
- Publisher of the work known as a reputable entity in the respective Publication world. (e.g., IEEE Journal or Oxford University Press etc.)
- Publication is well-known in the respective field. e.g., Reuters for News, New England Journal for medical research, and FT for financial news.
- Creator or Author of the reference work (e.g., researcher, journalist) is a reputable authority in the domain of work. We can say he/she is a subject matter expert in the related field.
- Published work is regarded as quality work and has good credibility in the field of work. Also, it is relevant to the source domain as well.
2. How does Wikipedia use reliable sources to verify information? (WP:CITE has more information)
Wikipedia's verifiability process involved the verification of citation sources. If the reliable source was not available for citation material, then Wikipedia likely removed the material from the article. Wikipedia required article authors to provide a list of references that provide details of sources. This can also be used by readers of articles to find out the authenticity of the material.
3. What does an article need to have in order to be considered notable on Wikipedia? (WP:N and WP:GNG has more info)
Notability is a test process performed by Wikipedia editors to find out if the topic in the test should be a new article.
The following are the main guidelines for a new article.
- If the topic receives significant coverage in reliable sources.
- The topic directly mentioned in the source. It also contains details about the topic.
- Sources should be Reliable Sources. Reliable sources are already explained in the earlier question.
- There should be secondary resources available that cover the subject. They will be useful for further tests.
- Sources can be available in any language and form of media.
- Topic work was produced from independent sources. Advertising, company press release, autobiographies, and affiliated website are not treated as independent sources.
4.If unblocked, what you do intend to edit on Wikipedia?
If I'll be unblocked, I'll start only reading the wiki articles along with Google search for the knowledge base.
