Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam was a rare jewel of humanity. Hidden behind his quiet, humble, gentle and unassuming presence was a man who lived out the priceless values of true integrity, kindness, dedication, service and love. His smile, sense of humour and sweet nature touched many lives for the better. His brief life was filled with personal achievements and selfless services to humanity.

Dr Nagaruban Arumugam, the second son of Saravanamuthu Arumugam and Mathivathany Arumugam, was born in Jaffna on the 2nd of March 1977. He began his primary education at Aikkiya Sanga Saiva Viththiyasalai, Chulipuram, and continued his secondary education at Victoria College, Chulipuram and Hindu College, Colombo. After migrating to Australia at the age of sixteen, he completed his high school education at Homebush Boys High School and went onto to study medicine at the University of New South Wales. Following the completion of his MBBS degree in 2002, he worked at various urban and regional hospitals in Australia and embarked on a training program to become a paediatrician.

Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam continued to maintain close ties with his homeland and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his brethren. A strong believer in the power of knowledge, ‘educating the impoverished youth’ was his life long passion.

As a paediatric registrar, Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam showed endless patience and diligence at work. He had a remarkable empathy for ill children in his care and always maintained humanity despite the rigors of work.

On June 22nd 2009, after a series of long shifts at a regional hospital, Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam was returning home to his wife Akalya when his life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident. On the 25th of June 2009, the Australian Federal Parliament praised his services to the rural communities. Thousands of people paid tributes at his funeral in Sydney.

Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam was an exceptional doctor and an epitome of highest of human qualities. Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam Memorial Scholarship has been established to honour and celebrate his life and to continue his legacy.
