@Key of G Minor: I saw the RFD nomination. I don't want to be too much of a downer, but is this a topic really worthy of a Wikipedia essay? Yeah, we have some niche and/or out-of-sync Wikipedia-space essays, but it just doesn't seem that relevant, just more like a thought. Many of our infoboxes don't even have bright colors. Additionally, the target audience, random passerby editors, don't read Wikipedia essays anyway. Any thoughts on possibly moving this to User:Key of G Minor/Don't be attracted to the infobox's bright colors or the like? SnowFire (talk) 04:52, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@SnowFire: I don't literally mean bright colors, I mean the fact that it's easily accessible, easy to edit and unitimidating, rather than the larger, more meaningful text. I mean the fact it's the first thing people see when they open a page, so I was making an analogy to a bright neon street sign being very noticable, rather than a dim, unlight sign underneath it. Er... you closed this after a single day? I've been busy lately and Monday's a work day. There's no need to close 99% of talk page discussions - maybe if this had been an RFC or something.
Anyway, I'm trying not to be too much of an "essay elitist", but... Wikipedia essays aren't just chatty comments. I'm not saying this advice is wrong, exactly, just that it's kinda obvious and trivial. I think we can aim a little higher for Wikipedia-space essays. I have lots of ideas I could write down for how I think other editors should behave, but I'm only going to turn one into an essay if I think that there's some meaningful likelihood of it doing good and influencing other editors' behavior. I really doubt that is going to happen here - true newbies are repelled by a blizzard of links to policies, let alone essays. Anyway, there's no harm in having this be a user space essay if you just feel you want to share. I still don't think this is that viable as a Wikipedia-space page.
I think your analogy about neon street signs is rather... stretched, but that isn't that important I suppose. SnowFire (talk) 21:51, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, wait, you've only been a Wikipedia editor for less than a month? I'm not trying to gatekeep, but I am being serious when I say that you probably don't need to worry about Wikipedia namespace stuff when you're getting acclimated to Wikipedia editing. I have past experience. I edited a couple years back. Sincerely, Key of G Minor. Tools: (talk, contribs) 21:56, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. You still haven't responded to my main point, which is your opinion on Userfication. Would you object if I just moved this to your userspace? SnowFire (talk) 22:25, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer to keep it in the Wikipedia namespace, but perhaps we should open up a RfC. It applies not only to random passerby editors, but also to any editors who stumble across such a page, IP or Veteran. Hell, I'll even open one to save you the trouble. Sincerely, Key of G Minor. There is a disagreement between me and SnowFire over whether this essay should be in the Wikipedia mainspace or in my personal user namespace. Should it be in the Wikipedia mainspace or the user namespace? Sincerely, Key of G Minor. Tools: (talk, contribs) 23:52, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • You can close this one. You aren't going to find any voters for an RFC on an obscure talk page - I've filed a MFD to take the sense of the community, see the link on the article page. SnowFire (talk) 23:56, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
