Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Kaplan International Colleges, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Taroaldo (talk) 08:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Kaplan International Colleges requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you.   -- Lear's Fool 08:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block. Alexf(talk) 11:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to Kohl1 (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking.

Request handled by: Syrthiss (talk)

Unblocking administrator: Please check for active autoblocks on this user after accepting the unblock request.

I believe you are mistaken. I didn't see any obvious link between the account name that created the EF page, whereas the Kaplan International Colleges page you created not only was created by an account with the same name (this one) and only referenced Kaplan itself...which gives the appearance of the account existing only to advertise Kaplan. The different language wikipedias may have different guidelines as to what is acceptable content and what constitutes a reliable source. I agree with the block on those grounds, but am not acting on your unblock yet as I'd like to make sure you understand the reasons. Syrthiss (talk) 16:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There are two issues here. Your username is unacceptable because organization names are not allowed - accounts must be for individuals; but even if your account were renamed you have a conflict of interest in respect of your organization, and would not be allowed to edit articles relating to it except under heavy restraints - see
Please read those. Are you prepared to abide by these restrictions? Having understood them, do you still want to edit?
Also, what is your connection with user Pureness (talk · contribs), whose only edit has been to remove the speedy-deletion tag from your article? JohnCD (talk) 16:41, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand now, I just didn't know I had to reference other websites, as I thought the official website provided more official information. I have found other websites (independent from Kaplan International Colleges) that talk about Kaplan International Colleges and that could be references. Could I edit the article and put those references instead? You could also change my username to Kohl (my name). As for Pureness, I have no idea, this is not me, we have just created this account. Thank you for your help.

Is the material you want to add something that would either establish Kaplan International Colleges as being notable in its own right, or is it something that could be used to improve Kaplan, Inc.? (which is where Kaplan International Colleges points to at the moment)
I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but I don't want to see you go through the trouble of the name change and still have your edits deleted. In general, my advice to you would be to avoid edits to Kaplan subjects altogether. I realize that is not always easy, especially if you are employed by Kaplan and see obvious problems with the articles. If you are unblocked and renamed, would you consider following the best practices linked by JohnCD? In particular, instead of making edits directly to articles making a note on the talkpage of the article you want to change stating the problem you see and giving the references that show what is correct? Syrthiss (talk) 12:10, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also I just double checked and the username Kohl is already been registered, but you could likely create a variation on Kohl. Syrthiss (talk) 12:13, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kaplan International Colleges is very different from the Kaplan Inc article. The article was just informative, explaining the history of the name since 1946 (it's been changed a few times, Aspect to Kaplan Aspect to Kaplan International Colleges), then where the schools were etc. This is nowhere to be found in the Kaplan Inc article. So yes the material I will add will establish Kaplan International Colleges as being notable in its own right. I will quote other websites that talk about it (newspaper releases, student websites etc)

Yes I will follow the best practices - however how does this apply to Kaplan International Colleges article (there was no article before, just references in a few pages of Kaplan Aspect, the old name, so I just replaced them (should I have made a note on the talkpage of the article instead? How often is this checked?)

You can make any variation of Kohl. Kohl1 will be good.

Thank you for your time.

Ok, then what I suggest to you is that you follow the directions at WP:WIZARD (our process that essentially requests that an article be created for you in the main article area using your suggested draft created in a protected area). I can also provide you with the text of the article if you don't know how to retrieve it from the history. One of the article reviewers will then do a first pass and bring up any concerns. As for making notes on the talkpage for requested edits in COI areas, use {{request edit}} (cut and paste that directly as you see here... not the version with the tlx in it that you see when you edit the page) and then the edit and sources as I mentioned above. What that does is put the edit request into a category patrolled by other editors. However, I'm not sure on the turnaround times for responses since it is dependent on other editors to be checking the category. I also double checked your desired name Kohl1 and it isn't taken already.
I'm going to process your unblock now. I request that you don't make any edits other than to the requested rename page at WP:CHU or here until the name change has been completed, which is usually reasonably fast. If you don't feel comfortable making the edit there requesting the name change yourself let me know here and I'll make it for you. Thanks very much for your understanding. Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a few moments to create a new account with a username that represents only you. If your username doesn't represent a group, organization or website, you may ask for a review of this username block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|Your reason here}}. Thank you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:04, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can I use my new username yet? The process to change it seemed complicated, can you please do it for me? Thanks very much

It looks like you are blocked in such a way that you an just register your new username like you were coming here for the first time. If you don't want to do that, just let me know here and I'll put in your request. Syrthiss (talk) 16:17, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It says I cannot register a new username because Information about the block: account creation from this IP address (194.116.198.179) was blocked by Materialscientist, who gave the reason Vandalism.
