infobox icons

hello. 1) the thread was archived too soon, so i just revived it and updated the link to: Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#image icons and flags in infobox headers. 2) i have the mf/df change buried somewhere in a script, and don't even think it matters which way it is set. i think it is over-ridden by user preferences. 3) leave me alone about the archive thing! i know it's out of hand, but i messed it up really bad a while ago, and i keep thinking that i'm going to fix it....one day....soon, maybe. cheers! --emerson7 19:24, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

U.S.

What on earth do you have against "U.S.", which is a perfectly legitimate and accepted abbreviation for "United States"? Ed Fitzgerald (unfutz) (talk / cont) 07:32, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Automated replacement

What's with edits like this: [1]? — Werdna talk 08:57, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Well what do you want to know? I am updating the writers infobox parameters as well as removing flag icons like USA and replacing with United States. And if something else catches my eye I also fix that. And it is not a bot. --pete 09:39, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, why are you removing the flags? — Werdna talk 09:53, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Why, because of the guideline Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags)#Summary pete 10:00, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I wasn't aware of that guideline. Thanks for pointing that out to me :-). Have you considered running that task as a fully-automated bot task? — Werdna talk 10:04, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Please don't reinsert less-than-useful comments

This change changed "{{Infobox Writer" to "{{Infobox Writer <!-- for more information see :Template:Infobox Writer/doc -->" again, even after I removed that comment, which I find less than useful. It's not helpful to ask people to look at documentation for stuff that they naturally would look at documentation for anyway. Can you please fix your automated script to not put in that comment? (What's next? Someone changing "{{cite book" to "{{cite book <!-- for more information see :Template:Cite book/doc -->"? Why don't we just put a comment after every template invocation?…). Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 16:37, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Sure, but think of what would happen if we followed that philosophy consistently in Wikipedia. This section would start like the following, in the edit window:
== Please don't reinsert less-than-useful comments == <!-- "==" marks the start of a new section; see :Help:Section for more information -->
This change <!-- The brackets surround a URL and the associated text; please see :Wikipedia:External links for more information --> changed …
Kind of extreme, but I hope it gets the point across. Let's put it this way: a Wikipedia editor who knows how to interpret the metanotation in the comment "<!-- for more information see :Template:Infobox Writer/doc -->" will likely know enough that they don't need the comment. All the comment does is gets in the way. Certainly if the editors of a page have removed that comment, the semiautomated software shouldn't put it back in. Eubulides (talk) 20:30, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

U.S./United States

I don't quite understand why you think it's important to change "U.S." to "United States" in infoboxes, but when you do, could you please check to see if the change is causing the information on the line to wrap to another line? Since "U.S." carries the same informational value as "United States", and links to the same article, I think it's preferable to leave in the shorter version if the longer version causes the line to wrap. Thanks. Ed Fitzgerald (unfutz) (talk / cont) 18:51, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Edit warring

The editor trying to add the dog in to Deaths in 2008 appears to be editing in good faith. I dropped a 3RR warning template on his page, but decided to be a bit more personal with you, since you seem to know what you are doing. His edit isn't clearly vandalism, so you don't get to revert him unlimited times. 3RR still applies. If you just slow down, other editors will revert him for you. There's no rush.Kww (talk) 23:54, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I reported him on 3RR. He's being reverted by multiple editors, so no need for you to risk getting blocked.Kww (talk) 00:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I may be blocked, but I do not care because of how I feel on this issue. --pete 00:22, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, I wasn't going to criticise you for an invalid WP:CSD#A7, but something had to be done. User is now blocked for a further 3RR violation, but another registered user has come along to the Deaths page. I've reverted citing consensus & invited him to the talk page. I need some ZZZZ's soon, so over to you. Cheers. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 01:02, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

WP:ANI notice

I don't know if you'll see this, but there is a discussion about your message, your editing and also your quick archive at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Fake_New_Messages. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:58, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

If you read the ANI thread, you'll see that I don't particularly care about whatever setup you have. There was some concern so I passed it onto the bot operator to think about. Otherwise, I would suggest not immediately dismissing everyone as acting "petty" when they disagree with how you do things. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Right now, there is a concern that someone else might have been offended by your message. I say let there be an actual problem with someone actually having an issue. "Don't go looking for dragons to slay," so to speak. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:37, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Portrait_webster_HSAC.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:50, 13 October 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 (talk) 04:50, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, Corky 02:56, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
