Whaling on the east coast of Greenland

I don't know who originally wrote that sentence, but I think I know where the confusion came from. You see, in the 17th century, Spitsbergen was often called Greenland (even though many of the whalers no doubt knew it was separate from Greenland early in the century), so whoever the author of that section was probably read something about whaling in Spitsbergen, where the island was refered to as Greenland, and so, in his ignorance, put that whaling stations were established in Greenland in the 17th century, when really whatever work they used meant Spitsbergen, where several stations were established during this period.
