Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! About your question if this article could be moved to a userpage/user subpage: you could copy/paste the content to your userpage or a subpage of it right now if you'd like, just in case it gets deleted. Just know that you still won't be able to link to it from articles. --InShaneee 02:27, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

In case you don't use a watchlist (like me), I thought I would notify you that I've replied to you on Talk:Harry Potter fandom. OvenFresh² 01:16, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Clay Aiken article dispute

Yes, I think it would be a good idea to list the Clay Aiken "gay sentence" dispute on Wikipedia:Requests for comment. It really is a shame that these people who try to hide behind IP addresses think it is their duty to take out this sentence at least daily. It seems a tad immature...

Thanks for contacting me about this and thanks for agreeing that the sentence (at least in it's current NPOV version) isn't so offensive and is probably worthy of inclusion in the article.  :) --MatthewUND 21:33, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know that the Clay Aiken article is being vandalized AGAIN. I'll put it on my watchlist. --MatthewUND 01:11, May 28, 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you have put out a request for comment on the article yet or not, but feel free to do so if you think that would help. I stand behind everything I've said on the talk page, but I'm reluctant to actually throw myself back into the arguing. Wikipedia has always been fun for me and I really want it to be fun for others. I don't want to fight. Anyways, thanks for your continuing help and efforts on the Clay article. :o) --MatthewUND July 7, 2005 04:43 (UTC)

I will continue to keep a watch on the Clay article and revert it when needed. I have had the article on my watchlist for some time now. I don't know what it is with some of these people. This Miklos guy (girl?) is way out of bounds. I'm almost tempted to post something actually on the OpenlyClay forum so they can know what's going on. That way they could answer Miklos' allegations directly. What do you think? --MatthewUND July 8, 2005 19:32 (UTC)

  • I think you're right. It probably would just make things worse to post something on OpenlyClay. Nothing will change Miklos or the other fanatics narrow-minded fans. This has gotten so out of hand that it is ridiculous. --MatthewUND July 9, 2005 03:39 (UTC)

Hi -- and also welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed Ayinyud's alternative proposal on the discussion page -- and well, I ran with it. Be Bold! So please drop over and look at the messes I've made. Below is my initial note on the discussion page.

"I'll join in, but I think we all have to take some initiative to get this off the ground. The time constraints may be the main difficulty. After all, everyone here does have a real life, don't they? What if we took the info above, claimed a chapter, wrote from one of the listed characters or additional character's POV (I'll be Ethelynn, the new upstairs maid - Chapter 7, User:WBardwin/Chapter.), and then put it together and edit jointly for content and flow? Each character would tell about events before, the murder, and events after from their POV, then we would have different snapshots to work from. We could then jointly write the revelation of the murderer and the conclusion. Having the first chapter to work from would be important, however. How goes it. Gkhan?"

Hope to see you grab a chapter too! WBardwin 14:39, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lord or Lady Margrets??? Thanks. WBardwin 15:43, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Er…sorry. Tyop there. I meant Lady Margret. Sorry! Hermione1980 15:45, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! Feel free to change her name (see the points on the top of my page) if you don't like what I had chosen. I only used it once so far. Have fun as the graceful lady. WBardwin 15:51, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why not join Wikipedia:WikiProject Harry Potter? --bjwebb 16:08, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You are a cat, aren't you?

In addition to everything else. You found it. Well, I am most glad you were the first visitor. But I still don't know how to make it into a tab. I tried. At the top of the page. You can see how successful that was. As for socks, it's been a most interesting day. Indeedy-do. What you say is so true. --Mothperson 00:17, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC) still not up to that signature part yet

Cat in the box - hmmn. LOVE THE IDEA. Now, which cat? Certainly not one of the dogs grazing. Although that might come in useful at a later date. Meanwhile, I will try to remember where I saw that darn tabbed sandbox. I must have gone there, so it has to be in my history. Thanks again. You are the patron saint of our box. Unless you don't want to be, of course. --Mothperson 00:58, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Dear St. Hermione: I was just thinking about you, partly relative to sock puppets, partly due to my ordering the new Harry Potter book just now, and partly because I meant to tell you I've also got a sandbox now, distinct from the litterbox. I went to the help page about signatures, and I still haven't figured out all the various possibilities, but I will. I'd rather go read sock-puppet speeches. Thanks for the directions! cheers, Mothperson 00:46, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

omg that thing was hilarious. And I adore the sock puppet photo. Thank you so much for sending me there. I have not read a single thing about the new Harry Potter because I have been very very poor for months, and just got some money that allowed me to order the book. But now that you have asked the question, and I am getting the book, I will go look at what you're referring to, and report back tomorrow. Hee hee - I should have copied that matthew whatshisname article while I was there. Mothperson 00:57, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That article was a treat to read. I am not on the upper levels of fanaticism in Potterdom, so I haven't even thought about the upcoming possibilities. Now I am. Must go reread the last book to prepare. Neville. I like Neville's prospects. But, as I said, I'm clueless. --Mothperson 18:23, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey, I have no clue how to do this stuff, but I want to learn! Could you perhaps e-mail me at sarah DOT harper12AT gmail DOT com or IM me at sarahlh2 ? PBurka pointed out that an important omission from this proposal: a band could meet WP:MUSIC criterion #5 (sharing a member with a famous band) and still be speedily deletable by this criterion. I've added a sentence to the proposal to reflect this: it now reads An article about a musician or music group that does not assert having released at least one album, nor having had media coverage, nor having a member that is or was also part of a well-known music group. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead. Please consider if you support this new wording, and change your vote if not. Yours, Radiant_>|< July 5, 2005 09:54 (UTC)

CSD Proposal 3-B

You voted or commented on Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-B or Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-A or both. I have proposed a revised version, at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-C. This version is intended to address objections made by many of those oppsoed to 3-A or 3-B. The revised propsal refers explicitly and directly to the criteria at WP:MUSIC. If you have not already done so, please examine the revised proposal and vote on it also. Thank you. Your vacation

I should have known! Well, I'm going to try to read my copy very slowly after it arrives, which will be more like a week after it comes out, so tell me no spoilers! Actually I came by to say I really hope that woman is serious about giving up on the 9-11 thing. I just read some of her Oct./Nov. contributions, and I'm beginning to understand why she may be so over the top about stuff. If we could all just shut up, it might be best. Anyway, counting down to the 16th - eek. Is there really only one more after this, or am I miscounting? --Mothperson 7 July 2005 18:46 (UTC)

Regarding the coming apocalypse, as I recall, when Buffy ended I went back and watched every single episode again for however long it took. Then I sank into a major depression. When Angel ended, I just sank into a depression. When Harry Potter ends, I'll probably reread all seven in one go, and sink into a depression. But no sense thinking about it now! I'll bet you've got some backward-working clock or special Potter timer next to your computer, counting down the seconds. I needn't tell you to have a good time, I know. But have a great time anyway! --Mothperson 7 July 2005 19:12 (UTC)

Don't get discouraged. You're doing great. Personally, I've decided not to feed the trolls anymore. Sorry to hear you're WikiStressed...I know how it feels. I just dropped by to say Pax tecum, and if you need to talk, feel free to drop by my talk page. -- Essjay · Talk July 9, 2005 01:14 (UTC)

Dear St. H: I also just dropped by to extend sympathy. Someday soon it will be empathy, I'm sure, but right now, the only things on my watch list that ever get vandalized are Eggs Benedict, Doughnut, and Waffle, and they're pretty pathetic attempts. Only a few more days! And I just noticed I am quoted on your user page - most honored!!! Now, breathe in slowly, hold, breathe out slowly. Repeat. Visualize that brand new, pristine cover, and hundreds and hundreds of fresh pages filled with print. --Mothperson 9 July 2005 14:02 (UTC)

Grant me the serenity to accept the pages I cannot edit,
The courage to edit the pages I can,
And the wisdom to whack the hell out of any troll who gets in my way.

Ah, yes. ::closes eyes, takes deep breath, visualises beautiful green cover of Harry Potter 6, and recites the Serenity Prayer:: Of course, I also have to be on a break away from at least the main article page I'm talking about that's being edit-warred over until about 8:00 my time tonight (I think that's 00:00 UTC), or I'll have to report myself for violating 3RR. Thanks, all of you. Hermione1980 9 July 2005 15:21 (UTC)

"Cruft"

Hey, can you not use terms like "cruft"? This is aggravating to the creators of the article -- it's not pleasent to spend your time contributing to Wikipedia only to have some deletionist call your hard work "cruft" and shrug your article off as useless. 24 at 9 July 2005 16:24 (UTC)

It doesn't matter if it's common throughout Wikipedia. There is alot of jerks in my town. In fact, jerks are quite common around here. That doesn't make it okay for me to act like one.
"Cruft", in my opinion, is labelling the article as useless crap. You should at least give a reason for deletion, not just label it "cruft" and run off.
Next, see for example [1]. "Article is complete schoolcruft". Again, it's not pleasent to have your article shrugged off as "complete schoolcruft". If you don't think it's "notable" enough for Wikipedia, just say it's not notable and nothing else. There no valid reason to offend the article's editors. 24 at 9 July 2005 16:36 (UTC)
I do not think we have to document every single little school on the planet. I do not make broad judgments as to whether schools should be included on Wikipedia. Yes, it isn't anyone's article, but that's not the point -- I was referring to the article's creator or the article's editors. Labelling an article as "cruft" only serves as insultation to the article's primary author and doesn't help the debate.
So what if I didn't vote in the deletion of that article? My point isn't that schools should be included in Wikipedia, but that we should not insult the article's editors.
You may not see it as insulting but many others do (from Wikipedia:Fancruft: Some users consider this a pejorative term and see it as insulting to well-meaning contributors; and there is no reason to insult well-meaning contributers). 24 at 9 July 2005 17:00 (UTC)
Opinion and pejorative can be the same thing. Pejorative means "tending or intending to belittle", so something like "idiot" would be pejorative and opinion. Anyway, if it is pejorative to some editors, it is best not to use it. 24 at 9 July 2005 17:18 (UTC)

Medal of Honor

I haven't ever heard of Medal of Honor (computer game), but I doubt it would have as many people looking for it as for this article here.

Dear St. Hermione

Oh, dear. I was just laughing much too much over the Wikistress stuff above. The serenity prayer!

I realized while cruising around yesterday that my signature must be annoying as hell, and I know you told me how to change it, but I am somewhat hapless and helpless at this stuff. Can you tell me precisely how to change my signature so that it reads Mothperson with cocoon in tiny letters to the lower right, cocoon leading to my talk page? Muggles' Guide

Whilst things are being kept small here on Wikipedia, in contrast the Muggles' Guide on Wikibooks is in need of drastic expansion. It can be much bigger than it is now. Have a look at the currently pitiful Topical index to the books, for example. I see it as eventually linking every topic to all chapters of all books in which it has a significant appearance. (The first five books need breaking up into chapters, in order to support this, by the way. See how the sixth book has been broken up.) I've done infrastructure work and started you all off, but it's up to all of you to do the rest. Wikibooks Needs You! Uncle G 11:11:09, 2005-08-03 (UTC)
