Well, what can I say? I'm very impressed with the article. Good work! I particularly like the first table in the article and I will incorporate it into the existing articles at some point. However, I think we need to standardise the results tables between this article and the ones that I have created, as they are very different! My immediate suggestion would be to keep the "Final Point Standings" table virually unchanged, but I think that the "Complete Overview" table could do with some tweaking. I'll do some more thinking about this.

Just out of interest, what source(s) are you using? I have used old AUTOCOURSE annuals to make the 1995-2004 season articles, but you seem to have more information than I do.--Diniz 17:48, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I have some questions about the discipline World Cup in combined. It was first awarded in 1976, and then again from 1980 until when? I have read (in "Ski Racing" magazine) that they stopped officially awarding that Cup in the late 1980s, but the article did not give the specific year. Yes, his (Spanish!) website says his nationality is Austrian. Unfortunately, most other sources assume he is Spanish, so I have changed the infobox back to Austrian and added an invisible note in order to prevent people from changing it back to Spanish.

I have always assumed he is Spanish, but now that I come to think of it, I remember reading an Autosport article a while back that explained his nationality more fully. I'll try to find it and mention it in the article. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!--Diniz 20:58, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi there - just a comment; I notice you've been creating lots of individual articles about the 1912 Olympic Games matches. Unfortunately, consensus is that this level of detail isn't encyclopedic on Wikipedia, especially as the important information is contained in the main page. If someone decides to nominate those pages for deletion at WP:AFD, sadly the result is going to be that they are deleted. I thought I'd mention this now before you wasted any more hard work on further articles. Note, though, that individual articles on important games (such as Olympic finals, FA Cup Finals, UEFA tournament finals etc) are fine. Hope this helps, EliminatorJR ^Talk 17:42, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

The data are taken from official sources, it is necessary to read them simply closely(attentively), there are much more information than is given at you. I think you are right about the medal table; I did what felt most (chrono)logical at the time, but putting them up top is fine too. The very best thing, would be an infobox detailing year, sport, medalists, and so on (kinda like a hybrid of the {{Infobox sports league}} and {{Infobox Olympic games}}) so all this info could be presented right at the top. About the date format, I disagree that it makes it more confusing. At lower resolutions, the full month name can cause a lineshift, which can be confusing, having the year first, as opposed to months, makes it easier to compare dates, and I personally find it more stylish to have the dates streamlined and not of varying size and shape. Of course, it might be confusing with month/date, but with the year first, it seems the most logical that the month will follow, and if anybody are in doubt, varifying the exact date is just a click on the link away ;) Poulsen 13:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, you are right, this player has not played a single match in this Olympic tournament. But he has played 20 full international games for Sweden! The only problem is, that I am working on Olympic games and all the information I have is added - hopping there will be same Swedish football fans in our big wikipedia family who will expand this player from the football side. (Like others have done this before to e.g. the Danish players from this tournament) So I have added all relevant categories. Please understand, that I can not do all alone and I also do not know everything. And please don't worry, that this is a football player, this is a chance. I have done the same for e.g. water polo players or rowers. Form time to time Olympians are also m. Mercifully other users like to help from this point of view. • I accept you believe in your statement, but my view is that this is not notable. If this Olympian is "military peronal, politicans, royals or war victims" than surely you should include this when creating the article. databaseolympics shows Jack London's date of birth as January 31, but I have seen it in other places as January 13. British Olympic Association has it as January 13 and I think it is correct.

Wudarski has Hilding Ekman's full name as Hilding Viktor Ekman. I don't have any other source for athlete's full names. Gh 17:42, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

I understand the reasoning and I think they are useful. However, they aren't useful unless they are populated now. If you can find one article on a Brazilian hand ball player who competed in the Olympics, please delete the Speedy tag. You need to have articles existing for a category to exist. I agree that they should be consistent, and I think you are right that the standard form for Olympians is Xxx Yyy-Zzz. (this is a little different from our standard practice of Xxx Yyy-zzz). My concern in the case of Kim Dong-Moon was that this was a cut-and-paste move, which destroys the page history (this is a Bad Thing). Please avoid doing cut and paste moves... Generally pages should be moved only by using the "move" tab. See Help:Moving a page#Wikipedia-specific help, specifically the part which says "Do not move or rename a page by copying/pasting its content, because doing so destroys the edit history." ... anyway, thanks for your work! Hi, I have seen that you haved moved some article of Korean badminton players from Xxx Yyy-zzz to Xxx Yyy-Zzz, like Kim Dong-moon to Kim Dong-Moon. What criterion have you used? I actually don't know which is the correct way, but I know some Asian people who says is Xxx Yyy-zzz. There is also this convention: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean) #Given name. Hi! You have added in November 2006 :-) the date of deaths to Harold Barron. My source reports his date of deaths with March 31, 1962. More than 16 years earlier. Is it possibe for you to check this again? Thanks and :) Doma-w 21:11, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

My source says that Harold Earl Barron was born on August 29, 1894 in Pennsylvania and died on October 5, 1978 in San Francisco, California. It can be mistake though.

Also my source says that Frederick Goodfellow died on November 22, 1960, not in 1931 as you say in the article. I hesitated to edit, because maybe you know better. Gh 13:27, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I have some data about birth and death places of various athletes, but the information is scattered around in many places (in various files in my computer, in some pieces of paper or in a book I have, etc.), so that info might be hard to find. I guess you are using Kemper/Mallon Golden Book of Olympic Games as your source(sadly I don't have this book or any other Mallon books) and I think that their data is as accurate as it could possibly be. So if they say that Barron died 16 years earlier, I probably would believe them. Other info I have about Barron: Studied in Pennsylvania State University[2], won AAU championships in 120 yards hurdles in 1917 (15.0) and 1920 (15.2), and was third in 1919 and won the NCAA championships in 120 yards hurdles 1922 (15.4). (that was what I could find with a quick search through my files. Probably could dig up some more info if needed.)

Also my source says (obituary in some Australian newspaper, but I couldn't find it right now to tell which one) that William Goodsir-Cullen died on July 15, 1994 not in 1960. Indian hockey federation gives it as 1998[3]. Here are two other articles about him written by Indian Hockey Federatiom [4], [5] (scroll down a bit).

Note that I'm not professional Olympic historian, just that collecting olympic statistics and info about olympic athletes (especially about medallists) has been my hobby for a past 20+ years, so I don't pretend to have a definitive answers.

I'm from Estonia. And yes, Wikipedia is a great place. I have tried to contribute to it as much as I can (especially about Olympics), but it is not very much. Haven't had time to do much lately.

As of Harold Barron, I think this book will give definitive answer. I haven't seen any books of this series, but I have heard it contains biografical data of every competitor. And a pity that this series ended with this book. And sadly it is too expensive for me, at least for right now. Gh 18:14, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Martin, you did an edit to Patrick Leahy (athlete) to say that he was a "British/Irish" athlete. This is not correct. Irish athletics in 1900 was organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association and the Irish Amateur Athletics Association, entirely separately from British athletics. Although Irish athletes took part in British competitions, and occasionally competed in the Olympics for Great Britain and Ireland (but see Peter O'Connor#1906 Olympic Games for how this was not always above board), they were not considered to be British. Hi Martin. Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes, I would very much favour the creation of a special category called: "Olympic medalists for Great Britain and Ireland". If you follow through the links you gave me, to 1900 Summer Olympics#Participating nations and 1900 Summer Olympics medal count, you are actually directed to Great Britain and Ireland at the 1900 Summer Olympics. The same is true for every Games from 1896 to 1924. The problem here is that there is only a single template for two distinct nations: Great Britain and Ireland and Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I think not only the categories, but Template:Infobox Olympics Great Britain and the flag template also need to be changed (see Template:Infobox Olympics Germany and Template:Infobox Olympics Russia). Unfortunately, my skills in WP do not extend to templates; they leave me addled!
I have re-edited the opening of Patrick Leahy (athlete) in line with what you said.

I think that the idea of an article and categories for Irish pre-1924 Olympic competitors is excellent! This was a golden age of Irish athletics, which is little remarked on because of the Great Britain classification. I would be very interested in collaborating on such a project. I am working on something else at the moment so there may be some delay before I come to it, but come to it I certainly will.
I have found that the template is not a problem after all. It is possible to add a pipe and "name=Great Britain and Ireland" so that the correct name is displayed. I have done this for 1900, 1904 and 1908. Scolaire 19:39, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi! A very long time ago you started this article: Charles Greene (athlete) with the year of birth 1944. My sources report 1945.

Maybe you will also have a look at this very interesting case: Evelyn Furtsch. There is only one source which reports her dob with 1914, but this is an interview with her...

Also interesting: Mildred Fizzell. Look about the spelling and see what is written here [6]. Now it looks like, that there is no relationship to Mary Frizzel. I have written a message to this user, but it is unlikly that he will answer. The www.olympic.ca spells both names Frizzell and reports there dob with January 27, 1913 (for Mary) and January 27, 1911 (for Mildred) and shows both with the same birth place.

I probably took Charles Greene's birth year from US Track & Field Hall of Fame article[7], which says 1944, but databaseOlympics and other sources I have say 1945. I think 1945 is correct.

I tracked down Evelyn Furtsch in Californian Birth index and it is April 17, 1914. I took a snapshot and put it up to my webspace[8]

As of Mary and Mildred Frizzell, I know only that one of my Olympic book says, they are sisters and probably their last name was spelled with two l's.Gh 16:17, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't know, if you have gotten an answer back from olympic-medallists.com webmaster about William Goodsir-Cullen, but I have found the newspaper obituary, which I mentioned earlier. I checked and all the boxers in the category are olympic competitors. So instead of writng categories:Azeri boxers and olympic competitors it is better to write just olympic competitors and the azeri boxers to be a subcategory. No need to write it for every boxer. --KRBN 21:46, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I think what Lokyz has done is definately right. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania has never used cyrillic and we have never used a father's name as a part of a name. This only a russian (and russian only) custom. Armenia (uses armenian alphabet), Azerbaijan (latin alphabet), Georgia (Georgian alphabet) and Moldova (Latin alphabet) doesn't use cyrillic either. The rest of the former soviet republics does, I think, but they don't use father's name in their name (except maybe Ukraina and Belarussia, but I'm not very sure about that). I actually don't know what was in their passport. My Estonian SSR passport which I had 20 years ago the blanket was in dual language (russian/estonian), but filled in only in Estonian language. My birth certificate issued by Estonian SSR, which I still have and use, the blanket is also dual language but filled in with latin alphabet and in Estonian language (I know this because my birthplace is written differently in russian(even transliterated) and estonian language). My passport didn't have father's name if I remember correctly. In my birth certificate my mother's and father's name are present of course, but not as a part of my name and not in a form **-vitch. But in Soviet Union, the normal passport was only in internal use, you couldn't travel abroad with it. You had to request "travelling passport" or "international passport" and get a clearance from KGB to travel to foreign countries. I haven't seen those, as I couldn't passed the KGB clearance (My father and grandfather were so-called "enemy of state" in Soviet Union, so I classified as "potentially dangerous people" or something such). I also found this article about passports (scroll down to a entry about Russia).

Personally I would feel insulted if somebody would call me in a form of name + *-vitch. Russians living in Estonia doesn't use this form when speaking with estonians, but use when they speak between themselves (eg. when the person is russian).Gh 14:17, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Most of the paperwork in Soviet Olympic commitee were done definately in cyrillic. And the names sent to International Olympic Committee were probably transliterated from cyrillic, if not even sent in cyrillic. In Soviet Union, we didn't had nations, we were just one happy soviet people, or as we ironically called us -- "homo sovieticus." Gh 11:01, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't know should we write those names in cyrillic or not, but I wouldn't write those names in cyrillic. I think somebody else has to make this desicion, not me. I don't have any info about Carlos Deltour and Antoine Védrenne, except that they won European Championships in coxed pair in 1899, 1900 and 1904.

Social Security death index says, that Frederick Boylstein was born on March 15, 1902 [12]

Social Security death index and Florida death index say, that Raymond Fee was born on January 12, 1903 [13], [14], [15]

I see, that you have linked the pictures that I put up to my personal webspace to the articles. I don't think it's a good idea, as I might delete them at any time. The Florida death index isn't available online without fee, but Social Security Death index is. You can put those liks instead of the images: Louis Salica, Raymond Fee, Frederick Boylstein.

John O'Neil (rugby player) - California Death index has March 25 [18]

John Muldoon - I know that some sources give his name as William, or even gives them both as a two persons. Wudarski[19] (and so also Bill Mallon, as Wudarski's files base on him), which is my main source for results and athletes full names, lists only John Muldoon. California Death index has John Muldoon with those dates [20], but also has William Scully Muldoon [21]. I think they were brothers, as the mother's maiden name and father's name are same.

Caesar Mannelli - I know that all sources give his name with one n, but I haven't found any Caesar Manelli. Instead I found Caesar Mannelli in US Censuses [22], [23] and California Death index [24]. He seems to be born in Italy and died in Contra Costa County. His father was an American-Italian painer Siro Mannelli [25] (btw they have the wrong birth date as california Death index gives it 1868[26]. University of San Fransisco has a scholarship named after him [27]. Maybe they know something more about him.

Richard Hyland - You are right abouth his birth date. Although databaseolympics has July 6, all the other sources I have give this as July 26, including the California Death index [28]. I don't have any other sources, but Wudarski for the athletes full names, and he gives Richard Frank Hyland and California death index seems to agree with him. Gh 07:31, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm not entitrely sure what you mean, but just to clarify: this infobox was recently renamed (previously it was called Template:Koreanname), and all demonBot has done is update articles so that they use the new name rather than the old one.

If you are refering to edits I recently made to a number of articles you created, all I've really done there is adjust the width and colour of the infobox. This is just so that it matches the other infobox it is used with in the article. It's up to you if you want to do this yourself in future, it's not essential or anything. :)

Well, it's all the same infobox, regardless of how the width and colour are used. You're not obliged to use these features of course, but that's generally how the infobox is meant to be used (see Seoraksan, Heaven Lake or Bae Doona for other examples of this). Date of death of June 5, 1988 is incorrect; in April 1981, Rex Hackett, who succeeded William Seagrove as headmaster of Normansal school, told me that he had died the year before, and that the school, which he had owned, was to be closed and sold in order to pay death duties (this did indeed happen in the summer of 1981). Hi. I was just clicking through Special:Random and came across Edy Schmid. I'm not sure the player deserves his own article, as there's very little information about him, and he was only notable for playing three matches for a bronze medal team in not a hugely-popular sport. My recommendation would be to redirect these types of players to a Switzerland handball team at the 1936 Summer Olympics, or more likely Handball at the 1936 Summer Olympics. What are your thoughts? I see that you have created this page. The correct spelling is actually Nikolai Vekšin. He was born in Haapsalu, Estonia and died in a Soviet prisoncamp in Norilsk, Siberia. Estonia and Russia used old calender until 1918, when the January 31 was succeeded by February 14. All the dates are from Estonian Sports Lexicon, and I actually don't know which calendar it uses. Yes we could use OS/NS style with birthdates. My lexicon says about von Wirén that he was born on April 29. I have checked other two sources and they both say September 11. Maybe the April is typo in the book and was meant to be August instead, so his birthdate would be August 29 (OS)/September 11 (NS). I actually don't know, but this seems quite ok to me.

I have checked, but the Lexicon doesn't say, which calendars it uses. It gives only only one date of birth per person, whether he was born before or after 1918. Anyway I have checked my other sources (Estonian books about Olympic Games, first published in 1980 during the Soviet era, second in 1992) and they agree with each other, giving the dob of Vekšin May 23, G. Faehlmann September 17, Vogdt July 27 and von Wirén September 11. I think they all are NS dates.

Vogdt, Vekšin and von Wirén were born in Governorate of Estonia, Lääne County (= Läänemaa). Haapsalu was and is a capital of Lääne County. Hiiu County (= Hiiumaa) was separated from Lääne County in 1950.

There is currently no consensus as to whether to organize the categories by importance or alphabetically. Personally I prefer alphabetically because it always gives a definite ordering of things whereas importance does not always do so. Obviously "Gold medalists of France" is more important than "Bronze medalists of France," but the categories are not always so clear cut. What's more important, "Finnish centenarians" or "Bronze medalists of Finland?" It's completely subjective. As for the date style, WP:DATE is clear on how to format date entries and, to be honest, that was the intuitive format for me anyhow. Too much information between the brackets makes it too messy if you ask me. If other wikis disagree, that's fine, but I don't lower my standards because other people do. As you've probably seen, however, I get very lazy in implementing the rule. I'm going through the Olympics systematically, first on Wikipedia and eventually on databaseOlympics to try and find out the oldest (90+) Olympic athletes. If I want to finish that project within a reasonable time frame, I can't go through every athlete and implement WP:DATE, otherwise I'd never get done – so I only do it on pages I have to edit for other reasons anyways (same with the organization of categories too, by the way). I think that the article is just plain wrong. He hasn't participated in any Summer Olympics as a footballer as far as I know or if he did, then he was only a reserve player and didn't play any matches. I read through bulgarian article (bulgarian is quite close to russian, so I understand almost all of it), and it doesn't mention that he has participated in Summer Olympics. Bulgarian article says that he participated only in 1960 Winter Olympics as an alpine skier. But it also says that he represented Bulgaria also as volleyball player. The answer to Aleksander Klumberg-Kolmpere's name involves a bit of a history. Until 1820, Estonians were kind of a slaves and didn't have family names. Alexander I of Russia freed the Estonians from peasantry and the local nobility (who was mostly from German origin) had to give family names to all who lived under their ruling. Some gave plain Estonian names like Kuusk (pine-tree), Tamm (oak-tree) or Rebane (fox), some tried to be funny and gave funny estonian names like Ilumats (literally 'beautiful hillbillie') or Tänavots (literally 'person who lives at the end of the street'). There was even a competition in some places, who can think and give a strangest name (but they mustn't have been offensive). (Some athletes who have competed in Olympics and have funny names: Eduard Vanaaseme (weightlifter) (trans. 'old bed'), Gustav Ernesaks (weightlifter) (trans. 'master of peas'). And some gave plain German names.

During 1930s when Estonia had a very nationalist government, they made a calling to change the German names to Estonian ones (Finland had the same movement at the end of 1920s). About 75% of people who had German names changed their names. The new name usually was either translation of the German name, or it sounded more or less like the German one. Athletes who did so Kristjan Palusalu was until 1935 Trossmann, Alfred Schmidt who won silver in weightlifting in 1920 changed his name to Sillak. Aleksander Klumberg changed his name in 1935 or 1936 to Kolmpere. Many more athletes changed his name, but I don't remember them right now (I don't have any reference material with me right now). Some people were later known by their new name, like Kristjan Palusalu. Some were known by double names like Aleksander Klumberg-Kolmpere (he is referenced like this in Estonian enciclopaedias) and some were known by their old name, like Alfred Schmidt (nobody references him as Sillak, although he legally changed his name).

As of Ferenc Forgács/Forgách I don't know. Forgács seems to be more Hungarian name (a lot of Hungarian names end with -cs), but I am not expert. You have to ask some Hungarian to be sure. Gh 10:07, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

• Dear friend, I have almost the same question but on the next stage. I am from Russian Wikipedia. We have had rather hot debates on the question if it is correct to transfer bio data (especially birth and death dates) from en.wiki - and the matter of this discussion was exactly the case of some Olympic medalists. I argued that I know who is the author of the articles (naturally that is you) and what is the source of information (the book you mention here and there in the comments). But as far as we have in our Russian section the rule of Verifiability - my opponents say it is not enough: the source of these dates should be clear from the article itself. I don't feel like I may add this info into Russian article as far I have never seen this "Golden Book of the Olympic Games". But if you show this book as your source in all the articles where you use the data from it - it would help us a lot because we could transfer this link from English article into Russian one. Do you have any info about Adhemar Canavesi? Most of my sources give his date of birth as November 14, 1884, but one of my sources says August 18, 1903 [40]. I would think that the 1903 is correct, because when born in 1884, he would have been 44 years old in 1928. A bit old to play football in my believings, but who knows. And do you know his death date? I'm working on my little list of 90+ Olympians who are living or possibly living. All of the following people are listed as "living" rather than "possibly living" on their pages, but I couldn't find any recent evidence that they are still living nor any evidence that they have died.
