Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from History of Bombay under Portuguese rule (1534–1661) into Draft:Colonial Rule in India - A Chronology ‎. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:56, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

From Ravi Sailesh:

Thanks for the continued support and alerts. i am still working on the contribution Draft:Colonial Rule in India - A Chronology Has you would notice this is a large sortable table with majority of the content taken from various Wikipedia sites (direct links provided appropriately in all the cells of the table). You will notice that this a first of its kind among the Wikipedia sites, chronologing a period with classifications and references. This is entirely owed to Wikipedia's style of structuring and making content available.

After this sortable table is made ready for publishing, which i intend to complete in the next 4 week, i will add appropraite note that the entire table content is a collection of articles from relevant Wikipedia sites.

i also seek your guidance to prepare the note suitably.

Thanks and Best Regards,— Preceding unsigned comment added by Brsailesh (talkcontribs) 11:33, May 31, 2021‎ (UTC)

Our requirement is that each and every time you copy from a Wikipedia article, you give proper attribution in your edit summary specifying which article you copied from. This is required under the terms of our license. Adding a blanket statement or note at the end does not fulfill this licensing requirement. Each and every article must be listed so that all the authors who wrote all the articles receive credit for their work. This is required under the terms of our license.
Just to let you know, in its current state the draft cannot be accepted for publication, because most of the information you included has no sources. Also, you may have noticed that the page is becoming difficult to load. That's because it's too big. Did you know that the recommended size for a Wikipedia article is 10,000 words? your draft is currently around 200,000 words – twenty times the recommended size. Most people will not be able to load the page – it will crash their browser or freeze their computer. For these reasons, it will not be possible for us to publish the draft.— Diannaa (talk) 14:33, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your continued inputs and support. i fully understand the requirements now. Please allow me to continue to work on the draft version in the sandbox ....

  1. i intend to add additional events chronologically and complete the list as satisfactorily as possible. . Am currently adding additional events in the list, after studying.
  2. Subsequent to this, i will have an overall and fair idea of the length of the entire article.
  3. i will then prune down the article to meet the requiremet of not exceeding 10,000 words.
  4. i will then complete the acknowledgements for the content copied from Wikipedia sites.

Thanks for the support and guidance. Best Regards, ravi sailesh

That is not the correct way to do it. Please state in each edit summary every time you add content where it was that you got it from. — Diannaa (talk) 00:22, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Brsailesh, it's pretty inconsiderate to have volunteer editors clean up your draft's copyright issues on a daily basis. This has just happened again, despite repeated requests from Diannaa for you to give attribution in the edit summary each time you copy content from another Wikipedia article. This is required. Is there a reason why you are continuing to not give proper attribution? DanCherek (talk) 17:05, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DanCherek|DanCherek], Thanks for the message. Am sorry for the inconvenience. i don't mean to be inconsiderate. i hold Wikipedia in a very high esteem.

1) i just do not know how exactly to give attribution (the procedure),

2) was informed by Diannaa that the maximum word count of an article to get published in Wikipedia is 10,000. However, this particular compilation is excedding 200,000 words. So, i intend to cut down on the text and retain only the chronological details of the events. This will result most of the copied content to be deleted from this article.

3) So, i was only working to try and complete the essence of the the chronological events, without loosing the focus and flow. i eventually, will have to cut down drastically on the copied content to satisy the limit of 10,000 words.

4) Once the above exercise is completed, i will work towards providing the attributions (which i will understand by then, as to how to provide the attributions).

5) i seek your guidance and support.

My Best Regards to all the Wikipedia volunteer editors !

Thanks for the response! I appreciate your efforts to contribute to Wikipedia. It is very important (and required) to provide attribution each time you copy text from another article, not at a later time. I am happy to help you understand how to do so. When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

If you are copying content from article XYZ, please use the edit summary to specify where you got the text. For example, you can write copied content from [[XYZ]]; see that page's history for attribution (replace XYZ with the actual page name). Does that make sense? Please let me know if you have any questions and be sure to do this next time you copy information into your draft. DanCherek (talk) 18:45, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DanCherek|DanCherek], Thanks for your immediate response and inputs. Will follow accordingly. Best Regards !
