I am unable to find sources to verify this but I have been told by Consumer Reports staff that Herb Lubalin, Tom Carnase, and Milton Glaser did significant design work for the magazine. Carl Fischer (designer), the photographer for Esquire, photographed some magazine covers. Edward Tufte directed the development of some of the charts. These people are high-profile within the field of media and there probably was some third-party journalism critiquing their relationship with CR, but through Google search I have been unable to make any connections.
