Replaceable fair use File:JoseGuerena.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:JoseGuerena.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 06:28, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

The article California housing shortage has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Content fork excluded from Wikipedia by WP:NOTESSAY

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. California housing shortage moved to draftspace

After seeing your message on the talk page, I have removed the proposed deletion tag and moved the article to draft at: Draft:California housing shortage, so that you can develop it and receive feedback from more experienced users. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and is not excluded from Wikipedia, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. Taxicabs of New York City

Hi, I noticed you added some information in the lead to the Taxicabs of New York City article. However, I noticed that you also duplicated the references on the page because the duplicated references contained quotes.

There are a few things. First, you usually don't need to add quotes for web citations, unless it's clearly controversial, there is a paywall (subscription or registration), or the site can't be accessed. If the webpage is live, the reader can access it and read the source text just fine. In fact, adding quotes clutters up citations and makes the article much harder to edit.

Second, you can use the existing name of the reference you are duplicating, as per WP:DUPCITE. For instance, the reference name Slate_Taxis is duplicated by a reference that is already on the article. The citation is named :7 so you use the wiki markup <ref name=":7"/> instead of creating a whole new reference.

Third, and least importantly, WP:CITELEAD says that if you have a reference in the body of the article, you probably do not need to repeat it in the lead unless the information is controversial. However, this is not an official policy, which is why it's not important.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me. Thanks, epicgenius (talk) 15:16, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi, epicgenius! Thanks for the explanations about quotes.
I agree with you that quotes make the article longer and harder to edit, and the references section more cluttered. I tried to use a <ref name=Example> quote=Different quote </ref> to not need to duplicate the ENTIRE reference, but wikipedia's parser does not allow one quote field to override another, while pulling all the other relevant info from the named reference. (Yes, they'd probabaly also be listed separately in the references section, if the above worked.)
I'm somewhat new to Wikipedia, but since there is a suggestion for editors to remove unsourced material, doesn't providing a quote which can pop up when someone mouses over that link, rather than having to read the entire article to find, make it less likely that a properly sourced statement would be deleted? Also, for the convience of the reader, I feel that it is nicer to see the relevant quote on mouse-over rather than having to read the entire article, especially if the article is rather long. Wouldn't having quotes improve the believability of Wikipedia to users? I can't find any agreed upon policy about quotes....does one exist?
Separately, why the ":N" for named references? Does this come from some convention?
Lastly, I'm ok with the Taxicabs article as you updated it...thank you for leaving the references in the lead, I prefer references everywhere the claims are....maybe I'll just add the archive.org links to the unarchived links. Thanks! Avatar317 (talk) 22:57, 17 January 2018 (UTC)Avatar317
In regards to your question about verifiability, or "believability": a quote is OK, but not needed for the vast majority of citations. Per Wikipedia:Citing sources#Additional annotation: In most cases it is sufficient for a citation footnote simply to identify the source [...] readers can then consult the source to see how it supports the information in the article. A quote may be added when clarification is needed, i.e. for a controversial claim, long webpage, non-English text, or print/non-accessible text. If there are multiple parts of the page that are being cited, then quotes aren't needed.
Also, the :N numbering convention for references comes from VisualEditor. It is automatically generated when you copy and paste references. It can be changed in the wikitext.
Finally, if a claim is sourced in the body, it doesn't need to be sourced in the lead, as per lead citation guidelines. Putting the citations in the body instead makes the lead much easier to parse. But if the claim is not sourced in the body, it must be sourced in the lead. epicgenius (talk) 15:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Information icon Hello, I'm Dennis Bratland. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Rent regulation seemed less than neutral and has been removed. If you think this was a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Dennis Bratland (talk) 00:10, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Rent regulation. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Binksternet (talk) 06:23, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Blockquotes

You asked me whether there were guidelines regarding the use of blockquotes, and this is what I found.

First, the blockquote HTML element is for quotes that are so large they contain more than one block (paragraph) of text. If the blockquote element is used to set a small quote apart from normal text, then it is being misused. That misuse has been deprecated in the web industry since before Wikipedia came along. See HTML_element#blockquote and Blockquote element.

Second, as you can see down in the reference section of your preferred version, any text inside blockquotes is smaller than normal reference text. The style guide MOS:SMALLFONT says we should "avoid" using smaller text inside infoboxes or reference sections.

Third, the style guide at Wikipedia:Quotations#Formatting says that we should work quotes smoothly into the article text to avoid clunky reading flow.

Finally, a foundational pillar of Wikipedia is the Wikipedia:Neutral point of view policy, which includes the relevant section WP:STRUCTURE. My reading of STRUCTURE with regard to your question is that the purposeful segregation of text based solely on the point of view expressed in that text – style formatting intended to favor one side in a debate – introduces non-neutral bias and must be removed.

Because of all of the above I hope you will stop using blockquotes. Binksternet (talk) 04:07, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Your recent editing history at Rent control in the United States shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.
This is your second warning; don't revert if people have challenged your additions (and opposed your deletions) Lourdes 10:38, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Please comment on Talk:Libertarianism

Please comment on the discussion regarding the use of the term "right libertarian" to describe libertarians that do not oppose free markets, and that do not make a clear distinction between laissez-faire capitalism and advocacy of free markets. This discussion can be found on the talk page for the Libertarianism article. The term is primarily used in a derogatory way and by self-described "left-libertarians". The individuals described in that article, and in the poorly-titled right-libertarianism article do not typically identify with the political right - or the political for that matter. Hi! I've noticed that when you sign comments on talk pages, your username appears twice. It looks like you are typing --~~~~Avatar317. You do not have to type your username after ~~~~, which is automatically substituted for your signature. Um, Wikipedia /does/ allow OFFSITE links in body ...

In regards to my WP:GF to Facebook Messenger page about a month ago, you stated in your reversion, that "Wikipedia does not allow OFFSITE links in articles", which is categorically FALSE. The Wikipedia page you linked to as justification, WP:EL, explicitly states that your perspective is false, which says, quote: "Wikipedia articles may include links to web pages outside Wikipedia (external links), but they should not normally be placed in the body of an article." This means that external links are allowed in the body of the article, but only under certain special circumstances. So, the issue here is what constitutes the special circumstances to allow the exception to "should not normally". In this case, the link is not just some link to an external website, that should go into the "see also" section. The external website itself "Messenger.com" is what is cited directly in the article, as such, that would seem to be a very reasonable reason to allow an in-body external link via the "should not normally" exception. WP:EL goes on list far more trivial exceptions than that as being perfectly valid in-body external links, quote: "Some acceptable links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic, information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy." WP:EL also cites WP:COMMON for commonsense, which would seem to strongly apply here, i.e., articles mentions name of website, article should link to website. If you still disagree, then I would suggest that you also remove "(Messenger.com)" mention from the article, as it's mention is irrelevant if the article doesn't link to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.54.0.181 (talk) 22:39, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Minimum wage

Hello, to avoid an edit war with regards to the minimum wage article; the USA Today article that I removed was actually updated after the researchers who conducted the study published further findings (which you can find in my original edit summary) that contradicted the original results. However, even after the update, the article does not mention the new findings in any way. You can check the dates yourself. The article is therefore not a fair representation of the researchers' work. Furthermore, the article was cited in a section titled "Employment", even though the study and the article focused on earnings, a different issue entirely. We can therefore conclude that the paragraph that I removed does not serve much purpose in the article. If you still insist on reverting my edit (which, again, wouldn't make sense due to the reasons I just cited), then at least fix the spelling ("employers's") and retain the formatting fixes that I made to the paragraph above it. You seem like a reasonable person ("show me the data" and all that), so I hope we can put this behind us amicably. Thank you. Gagwef (talk) 11:15, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

berkeley = liberal

I believe practically all peer review involves peers at other institutions. So although yes, there is a strong history of movements and "liberalism" at uc berkeley, a peer-reviewed paper published by that journal can't just be broadly labeled as such. Peer review is one of the best things we've got, and wikipedia really wouldn't be worth much without it. But i guess it qualifies the LAO piece and yes the LAO is historically high quality and nonpartisan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1012:B059:CB17:98F0:7FF1:21A:EA9D (talk) 07:13, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

PureFlix/QualityFlix

Sorry for the misconception, but we should either merge the list of movies that were made by Quality Flix, a subsidiary to Pure Flix or create a list for Quality Flix alone...

Better way of saying it is that there is no Quality Flix movie list we should add those movies to the PureFlix list.

What I was doing is starting a list of Filmmakers Quality Flix worked with. Doremon764 (talk) 00:57, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry

I notice that you started a sockpuppetry investigation last year.[2] I've noticed very strange editing patterns on pages related to land use regulation reform, including the YIMBY page where there is an account that edits under IPs yet clearly has knowledge of Wikipedia. Is that the same account as the one you exposed as a sockpuppet last year? Snooganssnoogans (talk) 16:01, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

My cell service (vzw) changes its IP automatically. Last I checked, IP editing was allowed. unless you have evidence of disruptive editing, id recommend channeling your energy into proofreading your edits so you don't end up degrading the work of other editors.2600:1012:B05A:C307:20E0:7174:5EA7:49A4 (talk) 16:32, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Mission Statements

I haven't received an answer yet to the question I asked you a couple of days ago on the talk page for National Right to Life Committee.

So, Avatar317, you would oppose the inclusion of the mission statement in this particular article: [3] ? FBPlunger (talk) 23:46, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Having taken a quick look at your editing history, I see that you have deleted quite a few of these mission statements (which seem to be very common in articles about organizations). However, it seems to me that these deletions are largely limited to the mission statements of conservative Christian and/or anti-abortion organizations. That's why I was wondering about the pro-abortion rights Catholics for Choice whose article you briefly edited in August [4], but whose mission statement you left intact. As you can see, there is a dispute over the lede. It might be worthwhile to include Mother Jones' characterization of the group as the "dark money ATM of the right" (although it would need to be attributed and not in the second sentence of the article), but saying it's a "self-described nonprofit donor advised fund" seems bizarre when there is nothing "self-described" about that claim. It literally is a nonprofit donor advised fund. Just like the Tides Foundation. Right...? Thanks for your thoughts. Marquardtika (talk) 16:30, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

Reverting good faith edits

Hi Avatar317, you recently reverted an edit I made and part of the comment you left in the explanation was "reverting good faith edit by..." I've seen that before but I'm not sure how you insert that into the explanation. Do you simply type it in or is there a shortcut/template I can use for that? Thanks! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 01:56, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

@Revirvlkodlaku: I type it in; though I have many pre-saved explanations for my edit summaries that I have saved so I can just cut and paste them in. The WP:GF is WP:GF surrounded by two square brackets, but you probably already know that. Cheers! ---Avatar317(talk) 03:55, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
Oh ok, thanks for explaining! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 04:21, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Re: 3Kingdoms, Rob Schenck

Thank you for reporting. My mentor @MJL: has reminded me that I did in fact fuck up, I reverted 3Kingdoms a 4th time after getting very, very upset at their violations of WP:SUMMARYNO and then their completely inappropriate and infuriating accusing me of "doxxing"[5] and I probably should not even have gone past the 2nd when it became apparent that behavior like this [6] would be the norm.

Regardless, though, I fucked up. I cheerfully accept whatever punishment is due, feel free to copy this to the report if you feel the need. IHateAccounts (talk) 23:57, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

@IHateAccounts: I don't feel that your behavior has been the problem here in any way. I thank you very much for the time and effort you put into painstakingly trying to explain stuff on the Talk page of that article. Also, thanks for fixing the references in my Talk page, I didn't know how to to that. Thanks! ---Avatar317(talk) 01:06, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Long-term effects of cannabis

Hi, kindly substantiate this please. This subjective claim has been identified by multiple readers now as inappropriate, perhaps dangerously so, & you continue to change it. What you personally consider to be a uniquely safe addiction is not a stance to be made on Wikipedia - other platforms such as YouTube or Reddit are more fitting.

Since you cite psychiatrists, can you identify either your credential or otherwise provide evidence of scientific consensus from psychiatrists that supports this view.

Addiction has three primary elements: tolerance, habit, & avoidance of withdrawal. Relative safety is not a component of the inclusion criteria for addiction. All 3 of the components (tolerance, habit, & withdrawal avoidance) have all been long established in the literature related to cannabis.

If you would like evidence of cannabis use being a "real" addiction, happy to provide, but since multiple people find the dismissive claim to be inappropriate (nor is it substantiated in any way in the sentence's citation), I think the responsibility is yours to provide the literature on how cannabis addiction is different from...addiction.

Long-term effects of cannabis - continued reversions

Hi, I'm not sure if you saw my prior message left for you, but I presume you did because you continue to immediately revert all changes on this page to return back to your personal opinion.

The citations you are using here, such as Borgelt et al, to say that cannabis is non-addictive, it literally states this within the Discussion section: "Other concerns about medical cannabis include the need for adequate monitoring and prevention of addiction"[1]. I don't know how or where you find a consensus on the internet or anywhere, that cannabis isn't addictive; it doesn't even in the citation you used.

I've included 4 sources on this; please actually read them & state why they are all invalid... This is not merely an opinion. There are many, many more citations than 4 out there, if you would like to read more or if you think it would be beneficial to the reader.

1. "Cannabis Addiction and the Brain: a Review". Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology.[2]

2. "Neuromorphological background of cannabis addiction". Brain Research Bulletin.[3]

3. "Is marijuana addictive?". National Institute on Drug Abuse[4]

4. "Neurochemical basis of cannabis addiction". Neuroscience.[5]

All of the journals & sources I included as citations, are among the most prestigious publications & widely used sources all across Wikipedia. They're utilized by clinicians globally. I didn't include anything controversial clinically; this is all scientific consensus. Can you explain your clinical rationale for invalidating all of this highly-cited research?

Please discontinue reverting to your personal opinion. If you need a reason why, I suggest you peruse this great support group[6] to understand why others ought to be provided objectivity on Wikipedia. Dlobr (talk) 07:30, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

ITER

Great solution on including all the goals. Thanks for helping get the car unstuck from the mud. Two remaining problems however, I'll explain. If you want to fix, please do so. 1. Your concision removes a VERY important detail, namely the primary measurable objective. This 10x gain is always the key stated goal in every single news article, hearing, etc. So what you did dumbs the article down too much. 2. Your text is not right. "ITERs goals are: to produce 10 times as much output energy as input" Watch my film: http://news.newenergytimes.net/iter/ StevenBKrivit (talk) 00:00, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Shouting

Don't use ALL CAPS to emphasize words in edit summaries like your most recent content removal. It might be taken as uncivil, especially in cases like this one where another user tried to revert you. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:15, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

@LaundryPizza03: It is not meant as shouting, it is meant to emphasize certain points in a text field that does not allow bolding. SHOUTING WOULD BE AN ENTIRE SENTENCE OF ALL CAPS!!!! :-) ---Avatar317(talk) 04:04, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Very well then. Sorry for the interruption. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:56, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
