It seems like a reference to Helen's own words about her life/marriage to Joseph Smith would be appropriate to include her, as she actually wrote a book/several articles on the topic during her lifetime: specifically the chapter "Scenes and Incidents in Nauvoo" where Helen seeks to tell the story of plural marriage from the perspective of Latter-day Saint women, who were neither “dupes [nor] slaves of men.” These brave women, she contends, “had to lean upon the arm of the Almighty, and in the face of persecution, sorrow and death, took up the cross and bore it heroically for the sake of future generations, looking Beyond this life for their reward.” Her published series of articles is not her only effort to defend plural marriage and correct misunderstandings and falsehoods, as during this same period she publishes two important tracts on the subject.
