Finnick Odair

Finnick Odair is a fictional character from The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. He is portrayed by actor Sam Claflin in the film adaptations The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. [1]

Finnick is the male victor representing District 4 and winning in the 65th Hunger Games. He is also the male tribute for his district in the Third Quarter Quell. Finnick was in love with Annie Cresta and had Mags as a mentor in the 65th Hunger Games. He became Katniss Everdeen’s ally in the following games. [2] [3]

Catching Fire[3]

Finnick and Mags were the two tributes from District 4 in the Third Quarter Quell. During the training, Finnick helped Katniss to finish the complicated knot and proposed an alliance with her. When the tributes were interviewed by Caesar Flickerman before their appearance, Finnick read a poem to his lover Annie Cresta. In the Third Quarter Quell, Finnick saved Peeta’s life. He worried that the people in the capital would catch Anne and torture her while he was trying to survive. Eventually, he helped Katniss destroy the arena and then was rescued by a hovercraft from District 13.

Mockingjay[2]

Finnick was deeply depressed because Annie's life and death were uncertain. Annie was later pardoned and they got married. He and Katniss became good friends and battle companion. After District 13 saved Peeta, Finnick voted not to kill Peeta and helped Peeta calm down. Finnick joined in the mission to President Snow’s mansion and fought with Katniss. He finally died in the hand of the mutts for saving Katniss.

Characterizations

Finnick is described by Katniss Everdeen as “extremely handsome.” She makes a comment that “he is tall, athletic and chiseled, with tanned skin, bronze hair and especially stunning sea-green eyes.” [1]

Finnick won the games thanks to his prowess with a trident, but he became famous among the people of the Capitol due to his charming looks and glamour. He won people’s hearts almost because he’s extremely handsome and gorgeous. [4][1]

Finnick is considerate and devoted. He rescued Peeta Mellark during the Quarter Quell. He finally died because of protecting Katniss in the mission to kill President Snow. [2][3]

Finnick is skilled in close combat. He tends to attack his opponents with spears or his special weapon, the trident. On account of coming from District 4 on the seashore, Finnick swims very well. [3]

Sam Claflin began officially casting the role of Finnick Odair for the film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on August 22, 2012. [a] Before that, three people competed with him for the role: Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch, and Garrett Hedlund. [7]
