Killers (stylised as KiLLeRs) is an upcoming British crime thriller drama series, created and principally by newcomer Jack Sullivan, that set to be broadcast on BBC1. No airdate has yet been announced. The series was commissioned by former controller of BBC drama commissioning Ben Stephenson and head of drama Polly Hill in October 2015.[1]

Plot

KiLLeRs follows the work of an elite squad of major crime detectives based in the Alpha Unit at Greencastle Police Station, inner-city Birmingham. Alpha are unique in that they are the only unit in the country who are made up entirely of disgraced officers who, for one reason or another, have been allowed to retain a position in the force due to talent, capability or knowledge of internal corruption. Alpha are headed by DCI Jacob McDonnell (Sam Riley), a thirty-something cop whose graduate education has left him without the much needed experience of life on the city's streets. McDonnell was formerly the overseeing officer of a major drugs unit in West London. He was transferred when he covered up for one of the officers on his squad who purposely destroyed evidence relating to one of the biggest drugs gangs the unit had ever busted, leading to the gang leader walking free from court and subsequently murdering all of those prepared to stand against him.

Luckily, McDonnell has a team of streetwise juniors who have all risen through the ranks to become part of the unit. McDonnell's second in command, Mary Kesgrave (Stefanie Martini), joined the force when she was just eighteen years of age and cut her teeth during the notorious Close Hand riots in Belfast in 2001. Following her transfer into Alpha, two of Kesgrave's former colleagues, who stuck trustingly to her like glue since their training days at Hendon, have also joined the team: Rose Silverwood (Pearl Mackie) and Graham Lawson (James Baxter). Rose began her career with West Mercia police, but became embroiled in a tangled web of drink and drugs when she agreed to cover for one of her best friends, who purposely withheld evidence in a murder trial. Having turned up to a major rape trial off her face on cocaine, Rose's evidence was discounted and the case was thrown out of court. But having gone through a long stint in Rehab, Rose is ready to get back out on the streets; however, her former boyfriend Curtis (David Leon) is determined to make life difficult for her at work - and at home.

Graham had only just passed his Sergeant's exams in Ilford when he was discovered to have given false evidence in an assault trial in order to help one of his friends get her violent ex-boyfriend sent to jail. His perjury was discovered, and he was given the choice to take a transfer - and lose his promotion - or be sacked from the force altogether. Graham made the wise choice to save his career and join Alpha alongside Rose and Mary. McDonnell's biggest thorn is station boss Paul Eastwood (Tom Ward), a long-serving former senior office in Metropolitan Police, who has taken a certain disliking to the new influx of untrained pen-pushing 'plastic' cops. Eastwood, however, is a fair leader and is prepared to give McDonnell a chance - unlike his own boss, David Burnham (Billy Murray), who is unimpressed with McDonnell's posting to the squad, and is prepared to catch him out at any given opportunity.

As well as the principal members of his team, Jacob also has to deal with his younger sister, Janine (Zoe Tapper). Janine has been by his side since the day that he joined the force, but isn't afraid to stand on her own two feet. Janine previously worked as a Detective Sergeant under Jacob in West London, but following his dismissal, demanded a transfer to Alpha, but her request was denied. She subsequently went on to sleep with her new commanding officer in order to blackmail him into transferring her into the unit, but her deceit was uncovered and she was subsequently sacked from the force. PC Kat Hayward (Emer Kenny) is also another close ally of Jacob. Kat was implicated in the unintentional death of a prostitute, who was incorrectly held in the cells for longer than the agreed detention time. After the victim died from heart complications, Kat and another officer were taken to court by the victim's family and found guilty of neglect of duty. Kat was transferred to Alpha after learning that her inspector had intentionally framed her for neglect out of jealousy of her relationship with none other than Graham, who is less than pleased to be working alongside his former lover.

The first series of KiLLeRs sees the Alpha team investigating a number of disturbing cases, which all appear to be somehow linked. These include a sixteen year old unsolved disappearance, an unsolved double murder, the execution of a parish priest and a savage attack on a homeless busker. Forced to work together, the officers have no choice but to set aside their illicit pasts and join forces for the greater good. This is their opportunity to start a fresh - but will they make the most of it?

Production

KiLLeRs was initially commissioned as a single series of eight episodes. Scripts for this series were written by series creator Jack Sullivan, Ed Whitmore, Declan Croghan and Graham Mitchell. Set to direct this series were Niall Fallon, Rob Burke, Lisa Mulcahy and Orla Walsh. KiLLeRs was initially envisioned as a series of stand-alone stories, but the decision was later made to turn the series into an ongoing story arc across eight episodes.

Following strong viewer appreciation ratings, and initial critical acclaim from internal BBC executives, a second series was commissioned before the first had even finished broadcasting. This series would feature ten episodes. Whitmore and Sullivan returned as main scriptwriters, this time joined by Mick Ford as the other sole scriptwriter. Set to direct this series were Ronan Burke, Marek Losey, Matt Carter and Imogen Murphy.

1"The Ties that Bind"Jack SullivanNiall FallonTBATBA
The first episode opens with newly appointed DCI Jacob McDonnell's investigation into the disappearance of 22-year-old Tommy Daley, who disappeared on the dark, deserted Birmingham streets one cold December night some sixteen years ago. The investigation is relaunched after the victim's mother approaches the police, demanding to know what what progress has been made to find her son. As Jacob gets to grips with the team, they question if Daley fell foul of a predator or was simply victim to the horrific weather conditions that night, which resulted in a number of road accidents and localised flooding. But without any new lines of enquiry, will the team's investigation hit a dead end?
2"Married With Children"Jack SullivanNiall FallonTBATBA
Jacob's troublesome sister Janine arrives in Greencastle. Meanwhile, the cold case double murder of two prostitutes in Greencastle city centre suddenly becomes front page news once again. The victims - Anna Kovenka and Selena Jackson - both missed pre-arranged appointments with regular clients and were found dead having been strangled with a ligature. A possible third victim, Rachel Wilson, disappeared after touting for business in a local pub frequented by pimps and drug dealers. As the pressure on the team begins to increase, an investigative journalist probing the case begins to cause problems.
3"One Hand Above Water"Jack SullivanRob BurkeTBATBA
Jacob is angered to discover that journalist David Hendley's interview with the Kovenka family has lead them to choose not to co-operate any further with the police. Meanwhile, Janine privately investigates a link to an unsolved murder in London. Jacob and the team begin to suspect that Walter Stevenson, currently serving life in prison for five separate murders, may have been responsible for the deaths of Anna and Selena, and the disappearance of Rachel. But just as a breakthrough is imminent, Stevenson is found murdered in his jail cell. Rose has other problems to contend with when her ex, Curtis, turns up out of the blue, and she later finds her flat has been ransacked.
4"Goalpost"Ed WhitmoreRob BurkeTBATBA
Eastwood assigns the team to the murder of a parish priest, Michael Considine, who is found hanging from the rope of his church bell, bearing an insignia drawn by his killer. They discover that Considine was never really accepted by the members of his parish, who were devastated at the loss of their former minister, John Barry. When they discover that Considine's murder has all of the hallmarks of a similar unsolved murder committed 15 years previously, they suspect a former religious cult leader, known as 'The Sect', may have risen from the ashes. Rose continues to investigate the picture stuck to her mirror by the people who burgled her flat. Is it a clue relating to a further crime?
5"Heading for Home"Ed WhitmoreLisa MulcahyTBATBA
With 'The Sect' ruled out, and no real motive to speak of, the team struggle to find any solid leads. The focus of their investigation turns to the insignia, which Jacob is convinced he has seen somewhere before, besides the previous victims. The investigation takes an interesting turn when blackmail letters start to arrive at the police station, addressed to the victim. The team question who would be brave enough to continue leaving clues to taunt the police. Rose's suspicions over Curtis' involvement in the burglary continue to grow when she discovers he has become involved with a local neo-nazi group, and she decides to do a little digging to find out what else he is involved in.
6"Cloudburst"Declan CroghanLisa MulcahyTBATBA
Jacob is called to the scene of the murder of a tramp, Dominic Forsyth, in a city underpass, but is alarmed to find him imprinted with the same insignia as Michael Considine. Having slept rough on the streets for three months, Forsyth appears to have had made many friendships with his fellow dossers - leading evidence to suggest that Forysth may have known his killer, due to the lack of evidence to support a struggle before he was murdered. Lisa begins to find herself attracted to Curtis, but Rose issues a stark warning to keep away - for the sake of her career. Janine pleads for Jacob's help in finding those responsible when she is violently mugged by a street gang.
7"A Loved One's Touch"Declan CroghanOrla WalshTBATBA
Convinced they are dealing with a serial killer, the team believe that someone close to Forsyth is withholding a vital clue to the identity of those responsible for both his and Considine's murders. But with a lack of witnesses and evidence, they soon begin to realise that the close-knit local community appears to be protecting the killer... and will go to any lengths to keep the police at bay. Curtis' connections with the neo-nazi group continue to grow, leading to his involvement in an arson attack on an Iranian restaurant. Jacob discovers that the leader of the gang responsible for Janine's mugging is none other than feared crimeboss Eddie Brennan, and sets about confronting him.
8"When We Awake"Graham MitchellOrla WalshTBATBA
Jacob orders a second post-mortem on the body of Michael Considine, unaware that the bodies of Considine and Forsyth have been switched in the hospital morgue. When the post-mortem throws up some unanswered questions, Jacob goes in search of the Forysth's medical records, but finds they have been wiped. But before he realises the bodies have switched, Forsyth is cremated, taking undiscovered DNA evidence of the killer with him. The investigation leads the team to suspect that the switch was made in an attempt to bury evidence relating to a historic brutal murder from twenty years previously, which could provide clues to finally unmask the identity of the killer.

Jacob orders a forensic sweep of Kelly's car, which uncovers minute droplets of blood in the passenger seat that DNA evidence confirms belongs to Eric Halford. She discovers a witness statement given at the time by a Gerry Lloyd - who turns out to be none other than Ronan Lloyd's estranged father. Matt convinces Mary to let him hand himself in of his own accord, once he has made his last goodbyes. As Georgina and Graham interview another witness who claims to have made a statement at the time, they realise that a number of documents made by the original investigation team seem to have disappeared. Aware that Matt may have tampered with the file, Graham decides to trust his instincts and orders the surveillance team to keep tabs on him. With no way back, Matt decides to make one last attempt to flee before Graham makes the final link in the chain. Stigma

Stigma is an upcoming, original six-part crime drama due to be broadcast on RTÉ One. The series was created by Jack Sullivan and stars () as Brendan Fahey, a disgraced Garda Síochána detective who faces the tough decision of making a clean break or aiding his former partner, Siobhan O'Kane, who is currently being investigated by GSOC on suspicion of corruption.

Stigma is a spin-off from KiLLeRs, although unconnected. A third series of KiLLeRs was scripted by Sullivan and Ed Whitmore, and presented to BBC executives shortly after the finale of the first season. This series was described as an "epic saga" and the "tie" which links all of the ongoing storylines together. Whitmore said he was "honored" to be asked by Sullivan to pen what was described as a "pivotal" and "groundbreaking" finale for the series. However, the BBC refused to comission a third series until the second series had broadcast; after which, they subsequently decided not to renew it.

The third series was adapted into an original story, Stigma, and was subsequently commissioned by RTÉ, with John Strickland, Richard Stokes and Tom Hall set to direct. Sole writing credits for this series belong to both Sullivan and Whitmore. Stigma is identical in length to the planned final series of KiLLeRs, and some plot elements have been retained.

1"Episode 1"Jack SullivanRichard StokesTBATBA
A disgraced Garda Síochána detective, Brendan Fahey, faces the tough decision of making a clean break or aiding his former partner, Siobhan O'Kane, who is currently being investigated by GSOC on suspicion of corruption. Siobhan's former lover, Kian Gilvarry, is on the run after an attempted assassination of former Garda Chief Constable, Dermot D'Arcy. The trouble is, Siobhan is torn between her head and her heart. Kian has offered her a new life outside of Dublin, but her feelings for Brendan are simply too strong to ignore. But by informing Brendan of Kian's whereabouts, she risks betraying the man she once thought was the love of her life. And by allowing her to leave, she realises that Brendan will in turn implicate himself and will become the target of an internal enquiry. With time running out, Siobhan is forced to swallow her pride and take a leap of faith.
2"Episode 2"Jack SullivanRichard StokesTBATBA
Twelve months after Siobhan's departure, Brendan is surprised to receive word that an official missing persons report has been filed by her parents, who claim not to have had any contact since Christmas. While a nationwide press release for information is issued, a junior detective, Eila Nolann, arrives from County Cork. Eila, who is six months pregnant, is due to begin her maternity leave in just six weeks, and has been seconded onto Brendan's team to work out the remainder of her service. Believing that Kian is party to knowledge of Siobhan's whereabouts, Brendan makes a formal visit request to Donegal prison. Kian agrees to the request, but Brendan is met with a wall of silence. Back at the station, Eila begins to make enquiries into Brendan's past, but her actions do not go unnoticed. As tensions between the pair continue to grow, attraction suddenly begins to blossom.
3"Episode 3"Jack SullivanJohn StricklandTBATBA
Drugs Squad detectives raid a disused council flat in Ulster following a tip off from a Garda informant, but are surprised to find Siobhan's warrant card amongst the possessions of prime suspect Joseph Bond: the former leader of the 'The Scent', a drugs militia operating throughout Belfast in the 1980s. Shortly after Bond's arrest, an unaddressed package arrives at the station containing a single handwritten letter. The letter suggests that Siobhan has been murdered and provides a possible location where her body has been buried, although the information is later deemed to be false. Eila tries to confront a distressed Brendan, but her listening ear results in a passionate encounter between the pair. As his feelings for Eila continue to grow, Brendan becomes attached to the idea of raising her unborn child as his own — unaware that her intentions are completely professional.
4"Episode 4"Ed WhitmoreJohn StricklandTBATBA
Fifteen years on from a spate of serial murders committed by a killer only known as 'Chopper', the mutilated body of a Dublin housewife is found dumped in a wheelie bin, in circumstances that mirror the Chopper murders. DNA evidence collected from the scene yields unexpected results, when blood samples found on a carving knife fail to match those of the victim: and are instead revealed to belong to Siobhan. Investigations into the victim, Adeen Lynch, fail to reveal any possible motive for murder, but Brendan is surprised to discover that prior to moving to Dublin, Adeen grew up in foster care with none other than Kian Gilvarry. Suspecting that Kian may somehow be linked to Chopper, Eila requests a warrant to search his flat. As Brendan struggles to accept the fact that Siobhan may be dead, he finds his life slowly falling into disrepair, and turns to Eila for comfort.
5"Episode 5"Ed WhitmoreTom HallTBATBA
After being denied a warrant to search Kian's flat on the grounds of insufficient evidence, Brendan goes AWOL and decides to carry out an illegal search. Although he finds no evidence connecting Kian to the murders, he finds paperwork suggesting that rent is being paid to an out-of-town storage facility. Meanwhile, in Brendan's absence, Eila continues to probe Kian's involvement in the Chopper murders, and makes an unexpected link to one of the victims. Later, when a silent phone call is made to the station, phone records suggest that the call was made from Siobhan's former work mobile; and Eila foolishly decides to follow the lead alone and heads to a series of lock-up garages on the outskirts of Belfast. A dishevelled Brendan finally makes his way to the storage facility, blissfully unaware that his heavily pregnant colleague is about to walk straight into a honey trap.
6"Episode 6"Jack Sullivan & Ed WhitmoreTom HallTBATBA
Having miraculously managed to escape from custody, Kian confronts Brendan. Forced to watch on as Siobhan is tortured by Kian and his friends, Brendan's judgement is pushed to the limit when he discovers that Eila has also been kidnapped and is being held by armed thugs in Belfast. Torn between his feelings for Siobhan and Eila, Kian issues him with an ultimatum: only one of the girls will allowed to live; and he has to make the decision. With time running out, Brendan realises that he has little choice but to provide Kian with an answer. Making the decision to save Siobhan, Brendan watches on in horror as the armed thugs set the garage where Eila is being held alight. Brendan manages to overpower Kian, but not before one of his thugs deals a potentially fatal blow to Siobhan. As he faces the possibility of losing both of his friends, Brendan swears revenge on Kian.
