Johanna Masko (née Juby) is an American-Canadian quilt designer and fibre artist. She is known for modern quilting designs inspired by vintage objects and an emphasis on technique. As a prolific instructor in the major metropolitan area of Toronto, she is a significant figure in the current revival of traditional crafts, especially quilting, in North America.

Early Life

She was born in southeastern Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan School of Art and Design where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She has been sewing since childhood and comes from a long line of creative types, including painters and clothing makers in her family. She cites her mother as a major influence on her work and to whom she owes much of her training.[1]

She had a brief career working in costumes and wardrobe for films.[2]

Career

She has exhibited at the International QuiltCon and Quilt Xtravaganza (QuiltX), and has conducted workshops for numerous quilting guilds, including Silo Weavers for Contemporary Quilts, Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild[3], Barrie Modern Quilt Group, Yorkshire Rose Quilters Guild.

At Quilt Xtravaganza (QuiltX) she presented Wireless, a quilt which features zigzag patterns representing radio waves and electrical currents, and the cartoon figure Reddy Kilowatt.[4]

Johanna's style has been said to be a hybrid between traditional and modern quilts.[4] Her teaching incorporates innovative simplification of quilting methods[5], and she has an array of simple designs that make her body of work highly accessible. Her Donuts pattern has been used by many online crafts bloggers.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

She teaches at fabric and quilting shops, and various creative spaces in Toronto, Hamilton,

She also works in millinery, handbag design, paper arts, including paper making and lithography.

Awards

She is a three time winner of the prestigious National Juried Show Award of the Canadian Quilters Association (CQA).
