Matape River is an intermitent river, in Sonora Mexico. Its noticeable runoff during rainy season supplies Guaymas agricultural area. Matape River is an H class stream, with an altitude of 112 meters above sea level. River coordinates are 28 ° 16'60 "N and 110 ° 40'59" W in DMS (degrees, minutes, seconds) or 28.2833 and -110.683 (in decimal degrees).[1]
History and Geography
The "Mátape River", also named "Guaymas" or "San Martial", was well-known in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries since the travelers who landed in the port began their pilgrimage upstream taking advantage of the current to quench thirst, especially of the animals, that in long caravans slowly began the crossing to populations like Arizpe (old Capital of Sonora), Oposura (Moctezuma) and Fronteras.[2]
Matape River is an intermitent river, this means that water flows only during the rainy season, though is possible to find it under its riverbed. Its river source, is located in Villa Pesqueira village passing through Mazatán Cobachi.[3] The municipality is crossed by several streams such as: Nogales, Cánori, Horno and De la Piedra de Amolar, which together form the Mátape River.[4]
This river supplies part of the central zone of the state of Sonora. Few times in the year it has noticeable runoff and when possible, its water supplies some agricultural hectares in the Guaymas Valley.[5] The watershed drainage begins in the mountains (the ones adjacent to the "El Novillo" Dam) through the “Mazatán Stream”, which travels south-west while crossing the towns of Villa Pesqueira, reaching San Marcial and delivering its volumes to the "General Ignacio Alatorre" Dam, also called "Punta de Agua".[6]
The predominant weather in the area is dry (dry,semidry and very dry). Water temperature varies between 18°C and 22°C. Matape River Basin is crossed by the isohyets 200 to 500 milimeters. Precipitation increases in high areas and decreases towards the coastal side.
Water flow
The Río Mátape 1 hydrological basin has an area of 3,100.4 square kilometers and is bordered to the north by the Sonora River 2 hydrological basin, to the south and east by the Río Yaqui 2 hydrological basin, and to the west by the Río Mátape 2hydrological basin, it covers from where Río Mátape begins to where the Ignacio R. Alatorre Dam "Punta de Agua" is located.[7] The Río Mátape 2 hydrological basin has an area of 5,930.0 square kilometers and is bordered to the north by the Sonora River 3 hydrological basin, to the south and east by the Rio Yaqui 2 and Rio Yaqui 3 hydrological basins, and to the west From the Ignacio R. Alatorre Dam "Punta de Agua" to its mouth at the Sea of Cortez. When referring to Mátape River basin, will be taken into account both Mátape 1 and Mátape 2 basins, which together total 9,030.4 square kilometers. The sum of these watersheds gives a total area of 82,559.7 square kilometers.[8]
