Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, TV anchor and singer.[2] He had made his place in the Forbes India Celebrity list for the first time in 2013 by securing 93rd rank but has moved way up to 33rd place in the year 2014.[3][4] He has also been declared the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2013, in the Entertainment category.[5] Currently he is hosting the Indian most popular comedy show "Comedy Nights with Kapil".[2]

Early life and background

Sharma was born to a Punjabi family at Amritsar on April 2, 1981.[1] His father was a head constable in the police department and his mother Janak Rani is an Housewife. Nicknnamed Tony in his childhood,he barely new shyness. At the age of four,he would get on the stage,grab a microphone to sing,crack jokes at the wedding of relatives.At the same time,he was good in studies and was everyone's favourite. He would entertain people with his jokes.As his father saw Tony performing in various plays during his theatre days,he would say that Tony will certainly achieve great heights in life.[6]
In year 2004, his father who was working with Punjab police died after struggling with cancer for many years.After his father's death,Sharma shouldered all the responsibilities of the family including the marriage of his younger sister Pooja in 2008. His elder brother Ashok is also a head constable in Punjab police.

Education and early jobs

After finishing his schooling,he started working at a local PCO to earn some extra cash.since he was good in theatre, various colleges sponsored his education, so that he could represent them in the youth festivals.He studied at hindu college in Amritsar.[7] He also holds diploma in Commercial Arts and Computer Science.After his father had got very unwell at that time,he requested his principal if he could teach theatre to earn money. That's when he learnt a lot as a teacher, as he can learn a lot from students while teaching.[2]

Career

The great Indian Laughter Challenge: 2007

Sharma has working in the comedy show Hasde Hasande Ravo on MH1, a Punjabi channel,until he got his first break in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge,one of the nine reality television shows he has won.[7] He had his first audition in Amritsar for season 3 but was soon rejected.His friend from school,Chandan Prabhakar,who plays the character of Raju in his hit comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil, was selected. He was determined and again went to Delhi for audition and this time, got selected and finally became the winner in 2007 for which he has won 10 lakhs as prize money.[2]

Comedy Circus: 2008-2013

After his win at the Laughter Challenge in 2007, Sharma decided to move from Amritsar to Mumbai to try his hand at comedy shows on the small screen. His talent saw him continuously showcased on Sony Entertainment’s Comedy Circus[8] where he won most of his seasons and also paired with the likes of Natasha Sharma, Mukti Mohan, Shweta Tiwari, Shikha Singh, Ankita Lokhande and Sumona Chakravarti who later on becomes his onscreen wife on his show Comedy Nights with Kapil.

Comedy Nights with Kapil: 2013-present

In 2013,Sharma launched his own show Comedy Nights with Kapil under his banner K9 Production.One of the most loved shows of the small screen, Comedy Nights with Kapil has created a new success story with its popularity and the show continues to grow leaps and bounds with each passing day. From the aam aadmi to high profile celebrities, everyone seems to be in awe of this show. Not only this, the comic show seems to have become the favourite destination for film promotions.The concept of Comedy Nights is partly borrowed from the British show The Kumars at Number 42. A celebrity is invited for an interview and Sharma’s odd Punjabi family smooches, mocks and flirts with the star till they go red with embarrassment.Veteran comic Johnny Lever believes Sharma’s biggest strength lies in his ability to read his guests well.[7] Apart from the host, Sharma has many other characters and punches that attribute to the show's success.Comedy Nights with Kapil has not only taken the host of the show Kapil Sharma to new heights of success but has also made him a household name.Sharma's signature phrase Babaji Ka Thullu has become world famous. It has become the most commonly used phrase amongst Indian's worldwide. From messages to various jokes on social networking sites, Babaji Ka Thullu is a super hit.[9]

Sharma also participated in Ustaadon Ka Ustaad,he has also hosted reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6 and has made appearances in Bigg Boss.[10] Sharma hosted comedy show Chhote Miyan[11][12]. At CNN-IBN Indian of the Year awards, Sharma was felicitated with Entertainer of the Year award for 2013 by Amol Palekar.[13] In 2014 Lok Sabha Election, he was declared the Brand Ambassador by Delhi election commission.[14] He was to make his film debut with Yashraj film's Bank Chor, but the comedian opted out of it.[15] He was featured as guest on the opening episode of Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 8 on 17 August.[16] He's making his film acting debut in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karu directed by Abbas Mustan.[17]
